[Crossposted to Windows Update, WinXP General, IE General, Security, Security Home Users newsgroups] Resolution [was Workaround] for Sudden Loss of Internet Access Problem http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html (revised multiple times since release on 08 July 2008) NB: Do NOT use Option #2 if at all possible! The vulnerability addressed by KB951748 *is* a big deal! How can anyone visiting here for the first time have *any* idea that they will receive good ........ or bad .......... advice? I thought at first that the TechNet Communities must be monitored by Microsoft staff and therefore be relatively safe. I'm still not sure about that. Having come here (for ease of use, on someone's advice) it appears that *no* such protection applies and that it really is a 'free-for-all' and is, quite likely, a dangerous place to visit. This may not have always been so - and I do wish to stress that I HAVE received some excellent and helpful advice, much of which has enabled me to help myself more and better understand my PC a…

If you folks keep bitching and fighting instead of fighting malware I'm going to go away. I am trying to contribute useful information from my work in the field, but I'll be damned if I'm going to continue here if 3/4 of the stuff is people bitching at each other over perceived slights. I have no time for it.

Antivirus 2008/2009 1 2 3 4
by Guest Gregg Hill- 80 replies

Hello! I just ran into my third new client with "Antivirus 2008" or "Antivirus 2009" rogue malware infection on an XP computer. The first to get hit had Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 9.x on it, the second had McAfee that came with the computer, the third has Dell's Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2008. All three had the latest antivirus definitions. I can see the SAVCE system and McAfee getting hit, as neither blocks malware/spyware, but Trend PC-Cillin Internet Security 2008 is supposed to block it. What is its attack vector? Does anyone know of consumer AV software that actually prevents this thing from installing? Thank you! Gregg Hill

Worries About Stealing, etc 1 2 3

You guys...you're all getting worked up about who stole what ideas and who pirated what scripts and whatnot. Easy there. The world is full of people who steal things, or borrow them, or incorporate them, or are inspired by them. Apple tried to sue Microsoft over the Macintosh "look and feel" and then Microsoft pointed out that Apple took the Macintosh style from the Xerox Star system. Case dropped. Anybody who is truly inventive will come up with newer ideas and better implementations. They don't have to worry about the also-ran copiers because the folks who copy will always be left in the dust. So, quit your bitching already …

Three days ago, I had RoadRunner (cable internet connection) hooked up. The tech turned off both my firewalls and DIDN'T tell me! (Shame on me for not checking) Just a few minutes ago, while I was surfing, all my programs opened up, one by one. Was my computer hacked and did someone get all my personal information?! I'm running my virus program right now. What else should I do? Please help. I'm a nervous wreck right now! Thanks, Annie

Does Microsoft Need a New Source Code for the Future? 1 2 3

I want to start a new topic on this because the Biometrics debate has gotten too long. I will now post Chris Quirke, MVPs reply to me about my thinking the 9x (98 Second Edition) should be part of the internal Defense Network of this source code. Chris Quirke, MVP says: I think we have the same ideas, but weigh things differently and reach different conclusions - you see the 9x code base itself as being something to be preserved at all costs, where I see the factors that make the 9x code base safer in certain respects as something that should inform other code base development. An interesting point from the article I linked for you, was the difference…

Earlier this year I started a thread expressing concern about the MBR virus. I had many replies and again thank everyone for their contributions. I noted with dismay that I failed to acknowledge his/her advice and apologise now for my oversight! This was the advice given:- The OP's OS is XP. Antivirus Software Is Destroying My Computer 1 2 3
by Guest Rebecca Chung- 55 replies
- 3.1k views
I'm not sure what exactly is causing this, but Windows Defender keeps popping up messages like this: "Application cannot be executed. The file wuauclt.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?" When I click on it, it opens up something called "Antivirus Soft", which pretty much tries to get me to buy it without solving anything. "Antivirus Soft" icons keep multiplying (I've let it multiply up to fifteen of them) on my notification area, but if I move my mouse over them, they all disappear. I cannot run any programs (i.e. Microsoft Word, Ultimate Zip, etc.), because the same message keeps popping up that whatever ap…

Norton CE detects virus in C:\Recycler... 1 2 3
by Guest Jordon- 52 replies

But there's nothing in C:\Recycler\... I'm using the Corporate Edition of NAV on our Win2k Server based network. It's an older version but it gets updates regularly. I'm not really interested in discussing the merits (or lack thereof) of Norton unless it directly involves my situation. I don't know, maybe NAV is broken. Norton is reporting that there is a virus found in my C:\Recycler\ (Win2k Pro). It says it's Trojan.Gernid and it's an .exe within a zip file. I've researched what this virus is suppose to do but as far as I can tell my computer isn't infected, other than the fact that Norton says it's there. The recycle bin is empty and I empty it on a se…

Zlob.Trojan 1 2 3
by Guest Hubert Rétif- 50 replies

Hello, On many PCs (XP Pro SP2) by one of my customer and also by one of mines, I have shortly discovered the Trojan Zlob. By most of them it seems to be "inactive". Only on one PC, it has launch Popups trying to sell an "XP Security suite". Some of these PCs have no data exchange together. All are inside a VPN network. A scan with McAfee does not see it. I could only removed it with SpyHunter from Enigma Software company. Looking for more information about this trojan (from where is it mostly coming from, is it really dangerous), I did not found very much. Perhaps can someone tells more here. My main question: is Windows Defender a good solution …

Source Code 1 2
by Guest Dan- 45 replies

Here is an article about how the NT source code was leaked and apparently even DOS source code was leaked back in the day but no one cared because it was so old. I now ask Microsoft how long will it be before Microsoft has new operating systems with new source code. Wikipedia mentions Windows 7 will use the Windows NT source code much to my dismay. How about the successor to Windows 7 will people finally get an operating system with new source code that will be a relief from the tired out code that has caused so many security problems. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3485545.stm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7

Malware Attacking Your Router? 1 2
by Guest ~BD~- 44 replies

"Instead of installing malware that continues to run like a key logger or trojan, malicious programs are increasingly attacking the network router which is common with any internet connected home and/or office. An unwanted program can quickly make a change to your router settings that will immediately open all your computers to the world. The bad guys won't have to install a key logger, they'll be able to record every byte that goes across your network. It's happening now to thousands of routers which are still using their default name and password." So begins a recent item by Bill Pytlovany. Full detail here:- http://billpstudios.blogspot.com/2008/06/m…

I'm using WinXP Media Center, the last few days I've noticed that there's some kind of d/l actitivity showing even when I'm doing nothing online even with the Windows firewall up as well as ZoneAlarm. I'm on 56k dialup. How do I determine what this is? I don't have Windows update on automatic. I ran AdAware with the latest definitions but it's still doing it. Thanks.

"Peter Foldes" <okf22@hotmail.com> has recently said.. "You should see my W2K3 Enterprise Sever boot. From cold boot to fully loaded Desktop 46 seconds including LAN connection" (his mis-spelling of 'Server') Wikipedia tells me ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_Server ) "An enterprise server is a computer system which performs an essential service for a large organization. Examples include corporate web servers, print servers, and databases. A key feature distinguishing an enterprise server is that even a short-term failure can cost more than purchasing and installing the system. For example, it may take only a few minutes' down tim…

Biometrics 1 2

How secure and safe is biometric technology? The reason I bring this up is because I was able to log in using my finger with a band-aid attached and this definitely makes me question the security and safety of biometric technology at least as far as laptops go. I imagine there probably is lots of articles on this already but I wanted the opinions of this newsgroup. Thanks in advance for the replies.

Certificate Purpose 1 2
by Guest Vadim Rapp- 42 replies

Hello, I have a personal email signing certificate from Thawte. The certificate is issued in my name. The certificate is installed in the system. If I look at the certificate from Internet Explorer Options/Content/Certificates, or from MMC, I see two purposes of the certificate: "proves your identity to a remote computer" and "Protects email messages". But if I send an email signed with this certificate, and then look at the certificate already in the email (sent or received - same thing), I see only purpose "Protects email messages". Same in Outlook and in Outlook Express. Why I don't see "proves your identity" purpose in the certificate in email?…
