Google Groups like Deja News?
by Guest Fritz Wuehler- 10 replies

I think Google is attempting to integrate their groups search with their regular web search. Searches that show only a few hits in groups, are lately showing quite a few more hits in the web search, but their groups are completely FUBAR. About the only thing that still works fine in groups is the ability of spammers to continue spamming through googlegroups.com with impunity. Everything else in groups has gone kerplunk. Maybe they will fix it, maybe they won't. Google is too unreliable at this point. In fact, their wagon may have broken down for good. Google took over defunct Deja News some years ago. I wonder who will take over the billion usenet p…

Anyone familiar with Authentium? Do they do a good job of protecting against viruses, threats, spam, etc? Would you recommend them? They provide a free security suite through my ISP and I'm not sure if their service is equal to Norton, McAfee, TrendMicro, etc. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

It has invaded my Internet Explorer, dropped a anti-virus toolbar on my screen, and redirects to an antivirus software sales page http://asecurityservice.com/. Any suggestons on how to get rid of this thing?

Hi, A long time ago I posted a message about a threat. Someone answered me and gave me a direction to run to get several antiviruses, beside mine, which is aVG. it is C:\AV-CLS\Startmenu.BAT. That was in another computer (both running Windows XP). I am trying to run it in this one and I get an error message saying the page cannot be found. Someone could tell me how to do to retrieve it, please? Many thanks Best regards

by Guest Bailey- 4 replies

For months now I have been trying to determine what the most important security events are. It would be greatly appreciated if you could help me by giving me at least 10 of the most popular events to monitor. Currently we are monitoring several events and we want to shorten the list with the most important events. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, -- Bailey

Help with file permissions and ICACLS.EXE problem
by Guest Dale- 1 reply
I'm getting desperate for help here. Yes, I am an MCSE but this is Vista and Vista security does not act like any security before it. Here's the problem: I have scanned the CD covers for my entire CD collection and saved them as 480x480 pixel images named Folder.jpg in the corresponding album folder. Windows Media Player 11 insists on resizing those images to 200x200 pixels. There is nothing in Windows Media Player that will stop this. Setting the read-only attribute also does not stop WMP from destroying the album art. My goal is to stop this behavior by setting the NTFS permissions. I've been doing it for years with WMP 9 and WMP 10 in XP and S…

MS06-041 exposure

Two clarifying questions regarding The DNS Client Buffer Overrun Vulnerability (CVE-2006-3441) referenced in MS06-041 1) is the DNS server (ie: on Win2000, Win2K) vulnerable in any way if a client attempts to query an "evil" dns record from an "evil" dns server, or is this just a dns client resolver issue? 2) if the client passes its DNS query requst to a "good" upstream DNS server (Windows or otherwise), will that server "pass thru" any potential attack payload, or can the vulnerability only occur if the client is directly resolving to a "evil" dns server? thanks! -Matt

I'm using WinXP Media Center, the last few days I've noticed that there's some kind of d/l actitivity showing even when I'm doing nothing online even with the Windows firewall up as well as ZoneAlarm. I'm on 56k dialup. How do I determine what this is? I don't have Windows update on automatic. I ran AdAware with the latest definitions but it's still doing it. Thanks.

MS06-048 Fixed or not?
by Guest msb-2007@nospam.nospam- 1 reply

In the writeup for MS06-048, a Powerpoint vulnerability "Microsoft Powerpoint Mso.dll Vulnerability CVE-2006-3590" is referenced. Based upon the writeup, the reader is left with the understanding that the included security updates remove this vulnerability. HOWEVER, when following up on the CVE link, several of the security vendors show this as NOT fixed... what gives? Ref: http://xforce.iss.net/xforce/xfdb/27781 (says "no remedy available as of June 2007) http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/18993 (says "Currently we are not aware of any vendor-supplied patches for these issues.") Thanks in advance. -Matt

separate LANs, same DSL

I’m wondering if there’s anything out there that will let 2 LANs be segregated, but both can access the same DSL connection. The guest network simply needs internet access. We want to protect the corporate LAN from guests which are unmanaged by us. Thanks.

Antigen and Rejected Mailhosts
by Guest matthew_h- 0 replies

I am running Antigen for Exchange on a Exchange 2003 machine. My Outbound Mail Queue constantly has messages from my Postmaster that are in RETRY state trying to send NDRs (I guess) to what I assume are "spoofing" spammers. For these, the Additional Queue Information shows "the remote server did not respond to the communication request" which indicates the spam came from a spoofed or illegitimate source, right? I have added many of these spoofing spammers, the domains and or IPs, to my Rejected Mailhost lists but I continue to see my Postmaster is trying to send NDRs to the same blocked Rejected Mailhost. It seems like if you block a domain\mailhost t…

Norton 360 or Internet Security?
by Guest Dreamer- 9 replies
Hello all. Wich of those two do you recomend? I know Norton Internet Security has more options of configuration, Norton 360 does not allow you to modify anti-virus, for example, you can't verify a single file or a folder. But the anti virus is there, and it promises to verify everything, a pen drive, for example. My question: Is Norton 360 as reliable as Norton Internet Security? Thanks in advance. Dreamer.

EFS & new domain
by Guest wb- 1 reply

i have a few dir's encrypted using EFS that were setup when logging into another domain where I worked. I can no longer login to that domain as I'm not with that company now. Elcomsoft's "Advanced EFS Data Recovery" trial product can find the keys and decrypt the first 512 bytes. If that software can do it, isn't there a way my local cert manager can do it without me having to pay 99.00 to Elcomsoft? Or is there an opensource product that can do this? note: the last day at work as per policy my account was disabled so the local cache does not have the domain info i guess.

RBAC Printing
by Guest michael.bellamy@tabs.toshiba.com- 0 replies

Restriction in color printing? editing Permissions assignment and changing the ACLSet from <Permit>Color<Permit> to <Deny>Color<Deny> should make color printing diabled. However in Windows the RBAC sees the first page processed (not the first page of the document) as the enforcement object. Therefore when printing duplex, if the first page of the doc is color but all other pages are BW, the first page processed in a DOCUMENT printer (not page printer) is page 2 (the second side of the first page duplexed). Or: page 1 in Word = 2nd page processed, page 2 in Word = 1st page processed, etc. Therefore the RBAC sees processed page 1 and e…

FBI can install a piece of spyware called "cipav" through gmail...
by Guest jjoensuu- 13 replies

Found this article that talks about a piece of spyware called "cipav", used by none less than the FBI. According to the article the organization is able to get this piece of spyware installed through the target users gmail and myspace accounts. Check for example this link: http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20070719/cipav/ or this: http://www.heise-security.co.uk/news/92950 Would not surprise me if it was possible to accomplish this through yahoo and hotmail as well. Most likely all large U.S. corporations are in bed with 'who-ever-may-now-be-in-charge', just as various corporations provided silent support for Hitlers atrocities during WWII. Probably par…

Vista 64 Malware Removal Tool is Arabic version
by Guest Scoob Droolins- 0 replies

Went to run mrt.exe from the System32 dir in an English install of Vista 64, and it came up in all Arabic. This happened on two different US-based Vista 64 machines in different locations. Version is listed as 1.18.1507.0, date 9/18/2006, size 6,020,000, language Arabic (Saudi Arabia). These installs are up-to-date on Windows Update. Any idea how this version of MRT could have gotten onto these machines?

Windows XP SP2 and Symantec 10.2
by Guest Pinkiemjt- 0 replies

I just installed a new HD and I don't understand why Windows Security Center is not seeing that I have antivirus installed. This is the same configuration I had with my old HD but I never got the red shield in my task bar before. I have uninstalled/reinstalled symantec and renamed the repository folder, and it's been re-created, but still WSC continues to tell me that it cannot find antivirus software on this computer. I have auto protect (for file system and email and everything else) enabled and it has updated definitions. If i go into the Windows firewall configuration, symantec antivirus is set up as an exception. Will I just have to tell Win…

I have had a computer for Years. Though I have had some issues, I did not know until this last issues what the event viewer was let alone was for. With-out having to go through the normal process of getting to the viewer, (to check every 10 minutes to see if something happened) Is there anyway to have it pop up when error or warnings happen? - If it had of this last time it would have saved me about 80 hours of work. Thanks, Liz
