Hi all, I am using Windows XP and my 'hosts' file (located in C:/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/etc/hosts) gets deleted automatically . I am able to edit that file with edit in a command prompt. But whenever i try to open that file or any other file from the same directory (i.e. /etc) my hosts file gets deleted. I can see it disappearing. I have done enough googling for solving this issue but no luck also i tried AVG - anti virus, malware sweeper and Hijackthis but none of those worked. Any idea how can i solve this issue. Help appreciated. Thanks, Prashant Marne.

Hi All, I need to clarify some of my doubts with respect to the NT AUTHORITY\Everyone group in Win2K, XP and Win2k3 What I have read from the various Microsoft articles is the following: Win2k- Everyone group contains Authenticated Users + Other users Win XP and Win2k3 - Everyone group contains only Authenticated users and not Anonymous users. However anonymous users can become a part of the Everyone group by means of setting a registry key DoesEveryOneIncludeAnonymous. This can be done using a ploicy setting or by editing the reg key. However I still want to clarify whether the Everyone group on all the above versions of Windows does include othe…

to those that reply, hello. i must have picked up a bug somewhere in the last few months, because on an average of once every 3 days all of my '.txt' files get allocated an icon other than the standard '.txt'. this bug chooses at random which icon it will use to represent a '.txt' file, but it is always one of five or so that are already on my computer. it doesnt seem to do damage, and has never caused a problem, but it is annoying. my computer:: 1)win98se 2)i have, ' adaware, spybot, spywareblaster etc 3)antiV is Avast 4)'normal' precautions taken, ie, frequent degrag and running of above. (plus Ccleaner) i can and will supply any other details you…

Hi, I'm looking into full disk encryption products, and I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with any, and could recommend a product. We're running Windows XP domain wide, and don't plan to upgrade to Vista & Bitlocker technology for a while yet. The 2 products I have seen so far are: PGP Full Disk Encryption - Downloaded and currently trialing. CheckPoint PointSec PC - Currently talking to a reseller about obtaining a trial. Are they any other good products out there? Our basic requirements are: Full disk encryption, pre-boot authentication, integrated windows authentication, transparent to end users. It would be nice if this could…

Dave / Robert, Thank you both for enlightening me, as I have the same problem as "johny why". In frustration, I inadvertently deleted the keys: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\crypt32chain.dll and HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\cryptnet.dll using SpyBot Search & Destroy (from the Tools > System Startup window). Should I expect my PC to become unstable if it initiates Cryptographic Services? I appreciate any assistance you may offer. by Guest ritchie1230@gmail.com- 6 replies

Hello, I recently installed a certification authority (windows server 2003 R2 SP2) consisting of a standalone root ca and one enterprise subordinate issuing ca. I installed the root ca with a private/public key length of RSA 4096 bits and would like to change it to RSA 2048 bits. I understand that I could change it by changing the value in the CAPolicy.inf RenewalKeyLength=2048 (from 4096) and performing a renewal the root ca. I would like to know if this can be achieved by renewing the root ca with the same key, or do I have to choose a new key. Secondly, if I need to choose a new key, do I have to renew my issuing certification authority and reques…
