Introducing Windows Terminal Canary
by Guest Christopher Nguyen- 0 replies
Windows Terminal is distributed in a variety of formats. We are thrilled to announce that we are adding Windows Terminal Canary to the Windows Terminal family. Windows Terminal Canary is a new canary channel of Windows Terminal that ships nightly and includes “hot off the presses” features. This Canary channel gives users the opportunity to try new and experimental features before those features go into Windows Terminal Preview. Windows Terminal Canary can be installed side-by-side with Windows Terminal stable and Windows Terminal Preview. The Canary channel is also our least stable channel, so you may discover bugs before we have had a chance to find and fix them …

VAIO – a familiar name and brand to some – is expanding its FE series of laptops in North America to include Windows 11 PCs aimed at multitaskers looking for all-in-one devices for work, creation, gaming and entertainment. With 12th Gen Intel core processors, these PCs can meet demanding needs quickly and use up to 46% less energy for up to 10 hours of use before needing to charge. Another company that will also strike a familiar chord, Gateway, is launching a new lineup of Ultra Slim notebooks – including those with touch screens – also outfitted with the 12th Gen Intel Core processors. Windows 11 makes these PCs easy to start up password-free with Windows Hello (thanks …

Walkthroughs in the Windows Terminal Repository

Driving open-source contributions in large projects can be a challenge. As a new contributor, you might have a great idea for a new feature, or want to help fix a nagging bug, but you don’t know where to start. Even with a small project, it can be difficult to find the right place to start writing code. As a maintainer, you might know exactly where to start working on a feature or a bug fix. You might even have a good idea of how to implement it. But, you don’t have the time to write up a detailed guide for every feature. How then, can you share this mental map of the problem space with the community effectively, so they could pick up an issue right where you would? Th…

Customer Orders Database – what next?
by Guest Zahara Kondo- 0 replies
A few years ago we created a code sample for enterprise developers called Customer Orders Database, designed to demonstrate how developers can create and manage customer accounts, orders, and products for the fictitious company Contoso. It was very popular, so we continued updating it to support each new version of Windows and the Windows App SDK, and to demonstrate current design guidance. Last year we updated it to use WinUI 2.6. In May of this year, just in time for Microsoft Build, we gave it a major overhaul to work with Windows App SDK, and to support the latest Azure features. Of course, we had to make it look at home on Windows 11. So now, based on WinUI 3, the C…

Memory tooling improvements in DevTools for Retainers
by Guest Microsoft Edge Team- 0 replies
Any sufficiently large web application will probably reach the point where it uses more memory than expected. At that point, a developer might start recording memory heap snapshots in DevTools to investigate what objects are contained in memory. For any object listed in the snapshot, DevTools shows, in the Retainers pane, what other objects cause it to remain in memory. Any object with no retainers can be discarded by the browser’s garbage collector, which reduces memory usage. However, the Retainers pane is only useful if it works correctly. Over the past several months, we have received several excellent bug reports from Microsoft Teams engineers describing cases where …

Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22621.1391 and 22624.1391

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22621.1391 and Build 22624.1391 (KB5023011) to the Beta Channel. Build 22624.1391 = New features rolling out. Build 22621.1391 = New features off by default. UPDATED: Insiders who were previously on Build 22623 will automatically get moved to Build 22624 via an enablement package. The enablement package artificially increments the build number for the update with new features getting rolled out and turned on to make it easier to differentiate from devices with the update with features off by default. This approach is being used for the Beta Channel only and is not indicative of any chang…

[HEADING=1]TL;DR[/HEADING] Windows Insiders will notice that the name of the branch we are releasing builds from has changed to NI_RELEASE. Going forward we will no longer be noting when these branch changes occur. For more on our approach to how we release things to the Dev Channel, please read this blog post here. This build will not be offered to ARM64 PCs. We hope to be able to offer a new build for Insiders on ARM64 PC…
