Twins Miles and Malik George are almost always in sync. They graduated at the top of their high school class as co-valedictorians. At MIT, these bioengineering students embraced and expanded upon their love of science. They were also in multiple diverse groups on campus such as Nu Delta Fraternity, The Standard, and Laureates and Leaders. This last program is dedicated to helping under-represented students get Ph.D.s or M.D./Ph.D.s and has a selective entry process. The two fondly remembered the program as instrumental in shaping their academic careers. They worked with MIT Admissions as Admissions Ambassadors to increase the number of underrepresented students that apply…

If you work in software development, you probably already know how vital getting feedback about your product can be. Only your real users know what it feels like to use the product to accomplish their day to day tasks. You know a lot too, but being so close to the development means you’re biased. Here on the Microsoft Edge DevTools team, it’s the same thing. We are building a product for developers, and even if we are developers ourselves, we depend on your feedback to build the right tools for you. We want our tools to help you achieve more, be more productive, and produce better web experiences. Only you can tell us what can be improved or added, what features you miss,…

She was also hours away from a party celebrating a major milestone in the latest of her entrepreneurial endeavors. But all that came to a sudden halt when she ended up in a hospital, induced into a medical coma, with a 1% chance to survive. She beat those formidable odds, but not without a lot of lessons learned along the way – and facing another health crisis soon after that would prove even more challenging. “My whole…

When pandemic lockdowns more than two years ago required Swetha Machanavajhala to work from home, she almost immediately felt the impact on her ability to work efficiently. Born deaf, the product manager on the Azure Cognitive Service Translator team reads lips and doesn’t use sign language, so when virtual Microsoft Teams meetings became the norm for working together from home, she couldn’t follow the flow of conversation when people didn’t appear on camera when they spoke. Since 2013, when she joined Microsoft, she’d been able to attend meetings and presentations in-person, reading the lips of speakers. She also used the Microsoft Translator app and had access to the se…
