Windows patch creates memory read problem
by Guest geohei- 1 reply
Hi. I download Windows Updates using the following software: http://www.heise.de/ct/projekte/offlineupdate/ The patches (files) look like this: windowsxp-kb873376-x86- enu_5c67061f5227844ef8b5f1eec8596bd2520c542d.exe The additional 40 hex code is generated by the automated download software. When executing a patch, I get the following message: ---- cut here ---- The instruction "0x10106018" referenced memory at "0x36643166". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program ---- cut here ---- When I delete the 40 character hex code from the filename, the patch runs fine (in fact, deleting 20 characters is enough)! The system is a …

We have two computers that are not connected to the Internet. There was a problem because they thought that daylight savings time began Oct 28. How can I download the windows update for that, so that I can put it on a CD and apply the update to these non-Internet connected computers? Also, what is the Windows Update number for daylight savings time ?? Thanks, Wayne

Suspected bug: time of last update in Windows Update UI off by 1 h
by Guest C.R. Hinners- 1 reply
I installed an update tonight at 9:08 PM EDT. After restarting, I opened the Windows Update UI (via Control Panel) to verify the installation. However, the time shown next to "Updates were installed" was one hour before (8:08 PM) the time at which I actually installed the update. Just to do a sanity check, I clicked "View update history" and opened the details for the update I installed: sure enough, it showed the correct time of 9:08 PM. It seems like the main UI is using EST instead of EDT. Can anyone reproduce this? ---------------- This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggestions with the most votes. To vote fo…

No WindowsUpdate shield in tray
by Guest Frank- 5 replies

I recently stopped getting the windows update shield in my tray notifying me that updates are available. The only notification I get now is when I shutdown windows - it then gives me the option to install them, but it doesn't tell me which updates are available. Any ideas on what is going on with this, and how I get the shield back in the tray?

Generic Host Error message
by Guest claire- 6 replies
I need some help, please! Everytime I click on Internet Explorer and it connects to my home page, I get an error message. The message is: "Generic Host Process for Win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Then it asks if I want to send an error report. I have sent the error report and this error comes up everytime on log on to Internet Explorer. I always have to click to send error report or don't send. This has been going on for about two weeks now and it is getting very annoying. Please help me. I don't even know what it means by "Generic Host Process for Win32". Thanks in advance.

Windows Update error
by Guest Fenriswulf- 1 reply

I have not been able to update Vista since the beginning of July. I was being helped by microsoft's Bruce Shi for awhile, but he stopped responding to my e-mails.None of the solutions he gave worked. After going through this community, I was able to remove the first error, but am now met with Error 800B0100. I have tried all the methods I could find on here. Clearing the Sfotware distribution, renaming the Catroot, and using the Vista disk. When using the Vista disk to upgrade, after it finishes it says that it could not be installed. When I try to reinstall Windows Update, I get the error 0x800b0100. Does anyone know how I can fix this? It wasn't botheri…

The 'Check for update' button in the 'Windows Update' window reports 'Install new Windows update software' and if the 'Install Now' button is clicked the message 'Windows could not search for updates. Errors found Code C0150004' is displayed. Any suggestions how to overcome this issue? TIA

by Guest SSeeley- 1 reply

I am hoping someone may be able to help me. I am trying to install Service Pack 2. When the setup is backing up files I get the error 'cannot find ftp.exe'. I have searched for the file myself and cannot find it on the server. If I however look via another machine via a share I can see the file on the server. I have checked the view hidden files and folders so I should be able to see the file? Any ideas? -- Many thanks Stuart Seeley

KB938828 (probably) start-up headache
by Guest krisbke- 17 replies

Hi there, The latest batch of updates really left me in a mess a couple of days ago. Upon rebooting, explorer.exe would not run, leaving me with just the wallpaper and the ability to use Task Manager. If I tried to run explorer.exe from Task Manager, I was told it could not be found or I didn't have the permissions. System Restore would not work and I had the same trouble in safe mode (System Restore eventually worked in safe mode, but did not solve the problem in normal mode). After uninstalling the various updates one-by-one, I finally uninstalled the last two together as I'd lost hope this was going to work. They were KB938828 and KB936021, and to…

Workaround: KB938194 appears to install properly and is reoffered
by Guest MowGreen [MVP]- 12 replies
An update is available that improves the compatibility and reliability of Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938194 Working with another MVP we have discovered that the update appears to install properly and is repeatedly reoffered after installing it. The issue is that one of the Packages containing a Component update, in this case, WindowsCalendar, fails to install due to there being no Windows Calendar folder being present in Scheduled Tasks. The Windows Calendar folder had been deleted. The result is the Package fails to install, thus the Components listed on the KB page are rolled back. The other Packages of the update do install, thus, …

Error 0x80072EE2-How to change routher settings
by Guest amigomama- 2 replies

Can't get updates. I've tried all the recommended fixes, except changing router settings. Recently got new wireless router, but am using it as a wired. 2 computers on newtwork...one desktop (WinXP) can get updates, the other desktop (Win2000) can't. Have done all the firewall exceptions that I know to do. Could there be another firewall I'm not aware of (ex: downloaded with a Service Pack)? Any firewall help? How to change router settings, without changing registry?
