which OS is appropriate for an educational institution?
by Guest chenkuttavan@gmail.com- 0 replies

This might not be the most appropriate group to post this question, but I couldn't find a better one. If you know one better suited for the question, please do mention. Where I work (an educational institution in India), there are some 1000 or so machines all running on pirated OS (Win XP Pro.) and all full of pirated software. There is no network other than a dozen or so interlinked in some labs etc. I would like to suggest to my employer the risk of relying on pirated software and some way out. I would be suggesting them to purchase genuine OS and do with free software for the rest of the purposes. Can somebody tell me the best Microsoft OS for such an instit…

I saw an update for widows desktop search 3.01 KB917013 on my XP's. So I installed on my first computer, seemed to look ok. So I installed it on my second XP computer (I got 4 Windows 1 apple). I let them do their searches and indexes and hours later I did a search (when the indexing was complete). I then noticed that I would get different results from the two. **** Note, I crashed one of them last week, so that every single piece of data is exactly the same in both computers. Expecialy pictures and music. **** I get 16,000+ on one computer and 40,000+ on the other. I put in .doc and got 128 from one computer and 1415 (correct) from the other. I would doub…

by Guest John- 7 replies

Hi Win xp pro client pc connected to sbs 2003 premium (isa 2000). The problem is I can't get the windows update to work no matter what I try. There is no error message but the green progress bar keeps on running indefinitely at the 'Checking for the latest updates for your computer...' stage. All the things I have tried are listed at the end. The problem was discovered after a user found Outlook 2003 on the pc was not printing html emails. I tried to get the latest updates to fix the printing problem and discovered that I can't get the updates. Apart from problems mentioned, machine operation seems quite healthy. I can login to it remotely and work on i…

While running Windows Update (or rather Microsoft Update), IE7 goes to the site, then shows me a window saying I need to download an ActiveX control update of some kind, I guess to update the updater. Only problerm is, the Information Bar where you're supposed to click to accept it never shows, but the screen plainly says "Click the Info Bar to proceed..." - or whatever it says. Funny part is, if I switch to the other User on the same machine (Log off and back on), it works fine. What's up with that? I tried resetting all of the security controls to their lowest settings, even going through and changing settings allowing ALL ActiveX content, no matte…

I had the same problem as well. I tried reinstalling MS Office (Small Business) Edition but the update failure message continue to show up. I had submitted a request for assistance from MS quite awhile ago but I did not receive a response. I'm growing tire of receiving a prompt insisting me to install these updates when they had failed to install numerous times before. Is there a way to remove these prompts?
