WSUS and push of WDS 3.01 on 24th November
by Guest Rob S- 2 replies

Is anyone able to give a definitive answer (preferably an official one) on this matter? As several people have noted, today saw: * WDE 3.01 download and 'approve itself' on WSUS, then start installing on clients * This occurred despite WSUS being set to only auto approve updates to patches My company has not deployed any version of WDS (until today of course!) so the installation came as a complete surprise. Full versions, not updates have appeared on machines. My questions are: 1) Was this a deliberate action or a mistake? 2) Is there something we should have done to prevent this? (obviously not allowing any auto approve will do it, but that …

WDS 3.01
by Guest Srinath- 3 replies

Hi there, I've noticed today that wsus is pushing out an install of Windows Desktop Search 3.01. The Microsoft page for it, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917013 , doesn't indicate that there is any enhanced security by installing this. Is this using a security updates server to push out a new feature? I haven't installed WDS before, and was wondering why WDS is been pushed through using WSUS. Cheers Srinath

Failed installation of Windows updates - me too.
by Guest Samfrea- 15 replies

I've been a bit slack and haven't installed any updates since October 2006. My OS is WindowsXP SP1. Just tried to get up-to-date and all updates (some 50+ for XP and Office) have all indicated a failed installation. The initial "checking for updates" came up with only the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation tool which I tried to install. This failed and the window then led me to my update history which showed the 50+ failed installations. I cannot find any way to retry them. Seems weird as I've never had a problem in the past. Can anyone throw some light on this problem for me? Please... thanks

Fresh Re-Install of XP SP1. When to install XP SP2?
by Guest Ron- 3 replies
I am working on a relative's older HP Pavilion XT963, and had to do a non-destructive recovery of the system, which means it reinstalls all the OEM factory installed operating system and programs, but leaves data files, and after-market programs mostly intact. So, now I have a fresh install of XP SP1 on this computer. I have the XP SP2 upgrade on CD right from Microsoft. Should I do any critical updates through the MS Windows Update site, before I install XP SP2, or should I install the upgrade first, and then do the rest of the updates through the Windows Update website? As a side note, there is no broadband connection for this machine yet, so these updat…

Hi all, is there any way to disable already downloaded update on the client side? I mean some "central" way, not deselecting it during manual updates install. We have approved the wrong update by mistake in WSUS... Thaks, -- R.V.

by Guest Ian- 0 replies

I have been having problems with the above. As I have just moved to SCE, I placed the original question on the sce forum, see link, but was advised to post here. http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2318644&SiteID=17&mode=1 In a nutshell, this one particular server is failing to make updates, each time with multiple errors as above. Additionally, I get multiple entries in the log file (are they related?) of source crypt32, event id 8, description: Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from: <http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootseq.txt> w…

WMP Crashes
by Guest JCO- 5 replies

Running Windows XP Pro WMP Version 11. Windows Media Player crashes when I try to play all types of videos. And I do mean all file extensions that are for videos (wmd, aif, mpeg, mpg, avi..... ect....). Most of the time, I send the report to MS but we know that does nothing. I converted the report to a PDF file but I don't think I can attach it to this post. If I can, then I will.... let me know. I can't do a rollback, I can't uninstall it. I've reinstalled it but have the same issues. I've tried decoder but that never helped either so I uninstalled them too.

Windows update changes my settings
by Guest Judi- 1 reply
I just turned on my computer and the windows update downloaded all the recommended and important updates. I HAD the settings for windows update set that I could view and download the ones I wanted only. Well, after it downloaded all the updates I had not specified, I lost all of my husband's email and settings on his user site. Thank God for system restore. After I restored I checked the windows update again and yes, it had changed back to automatically installing updates. Does anyone have this problem? Vista seems to have a mind of it's own here and it is frustrating not to have my settings stay put. Any advise? Thanx!

I got a windows 2003 server hotfix that needs to be installed here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3ben-us%3b821507&Product=winsvr2003 When actually attempting to install this hotfix, I get the error: "Setup could not find the update.inf file needed to update your system" I have done a good deal of forum trolling and troubleshooting, including but not limited to all the methods (to no avail) in the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kben-us822798 None of the things I've tried work. I did find this very old post detailing basically my exact experience with a final response of "well, it looks li…
