Win Update Superfluous
by Guest Bill45- 2 replies

XP Home w/IE7 If IE is essentially shut down, no downloads permitted, Active X off & extreme high security setting, updates turned off, how would MS slip the update-update across to my system? Moot anyway since I manually find and download updates as necessary using FF. Will (or can) the Windows download site(s) push the update-update across a non MS browser not having ActiveX? Just curious and am not concerned, but the side benefit to me is update will no longer work even by accident, right? It's disabled if the update-update is not installed? please reply to my E-mail as I won't be able to find my way back here again. Squirrels ate the cook…

RE: internet explorer 7

I did a search on IE7 pop ups and could only find two listings. My question is, everytime I use msn.com and use IE7 I get constant pop ups that I cannot block. I am on dial up at 28 kbps and the pop ups are very annoying. How do I stop them. I did not have this problem with IE6. Second problem, when I click on favorites to go to a specific web site IE7 takes me to where ever they want to go which includes pop ups and videos of movies, etc. I do not want that to happen. How do I stop it. -- Smoky "leelee1987" wrote: > im trying to remove this and go back to explorer 6. but i cant find it in my > add and remove programs. ive try to find…

I am missing the HOSTS.sam file. There is a IMHOSTS.sam file. Windows Update has been unable to run and I think its because I am missing the HOSTS file. What would be the best method to correct this problem. Thank you.

Re: Error 0x80070005 at Windows Update!
by Guest WinTech- 0 replies
Don't know if it applies to other incidents since ACCESS_DENIED is a very generic error code, but we had the same problem on a XP Pro machine (Windows Update failed downloading with 0x80070005, exact same error messages in WindowsUpdate.log). In our case we found that the particular machine had an EFS encrypted CAT file in %WinDir%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}. The CAT file belonged to a Cisco WLAN driver, but I guess this is secondary. Removing encryption with the CAT file fixed the problem. Windows update now downloads and installs updates as usual. Update wants to keep reinstalling.
by Guest Harpy- 4 replies

Microsoft keeps sending me KB938194. It successfully installed two days ago but I still keep getting it as a recommended update. So I installed it again, probably a bad blue because after I did that my computer keeps crashing when I try to restart it. Can restart in Safe Mode only, no network. Can anyone tell me why I keep receiving their notifications for this update when it was successfully installed originally? Or do they use the same number for different updates? thanks if anyone can help this newbie. -- Aussie Soul.

Windows Components Wizard
by Guest sebuck- 1 reply
If I perform the following steps: 1. Install the OS. 2. Apply all updates using Windows Update. 3. Use the Windows Components Wizard to add a component (say IIS). Do I need to reinstall all of the appropriate updates such as service packs in order for IIS to be updated (and especially secure!)? Or is Windows Update smart enough to recognize that IIS was installed AFTER service packs, security updates, etc and tell me if I need to reapply them? If not, how do I even know what I need to reapply? Thanks, STEVE

a problem on your computer is preventing updates from being ...
by Guest Walt K- 1 reply

Windows XP SP2 and Office 2007 need a combined total of 24 updates. Windows Update is configured to notify but not automatically install updates. When I attempt to download and install any one or all of the listed updates, the error message in the subject line appears. There is no error number. Checking Update History merely tells me that no updates have been installed since the problem appeared. An error code does appear in c:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log (don't have access to it where I am now). By searching on the error code in WindowsUpdate.log, I found in another XP-related newsgroup that others were having the same exact problem with Microsoft Update. P…

Hello, I downloaded and installed KB936181. I keep getting the Windows found 1 update message. It installs successfully, the little shield in system tray goes away, then comes back in about one minute. When I click on it, I get the How do you want to install updates? box with Windows found 1 update. If I click Install, the same KB936181 installs again. How can I get the system to recognize that the update is installed?
