But Microsoft can't help. At least Microsoft India can't.

Last weekend I had two different people from Microsoft connected to my computer for about a total of 8 hours. Neither of them could fix it. The second one was supposedly an engineer it had been kicked up to. After about 4+ hours connected with Easy Assist he announced that he thought that it was an infection of some kind. But Ad Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Windows Defender, Norton Internet Security 2007 (Their first decent product in years.) and the new Panda Anti-Rootkit software all failed to find anything. This is getting really, really annoying. BTW, I thought it interesting that neither one of them tried opening the debugging tools on my system. Whe…

Unable to install update for Windows update - Vista Ultimate Editi
by Guest Richard Wells- 4 replies

Hi I've been unable to apply updates to Vista with the following symptoms: I originally had some error 80070005 messages and I tried clearing the Software Distribution folder, then re-starting the Update process. This appears to run but then it prompts me that Windows Update needs to install an update. I then click Install Now button and when immediately prompted, enter administrator credentials (these are accepted and they are the same Domain Admin credentials I use to run other stuff as Admin with no problem) - but then I get a prompt "You need to provide administrator permission" - presumably that is what I had already done!!?? I don't know wh…

How to stop Windows Update from trying to update software I don't
by Guest The MooseMiester- 1 reply

Windows update keeps trying over and over to install SP2 for Sql Server 2005 Express Edition, which I do not have. It then fails with error code 0x2B26. I wouldn't care about the wasted bandwidth and disk space, except that I have Windows Live One Care installed on this machine so every time I boot I have to deal with a nag message about my computer being at risk. I had Sql Server Express a while back. I uninstalled it through control panel. Uninstalls usually don't get rid of everything so I deleted the only reference to SQL Server Express I could find anywhere: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\SQL Server Express and all it…

WindowsUpdate lost all my settings
by Guest news.microsoft.com- 12 replies

A few weeks ago I received a report that Windows Update had auto-updated overnight with some critical updates and re-started my computer in the normal way. Since that time I haven't been able to retrieve my Administrator settings or password (which is none). The computer has started giving the error message that this computer suddenly does not allow me to log on interactively, whatever that means. There is an incredibly long description of what this is SUPPOSED to mean in the knowledge base, none of which is in the slightest bit relevant to either my computer or my problem For a while I couldn't even access the computer but I did manage to get in w…

This is for anyone who's having trouble with WU (BITS/AU): http://castlecops.com/t106642-How_To_Fix_Windows_Update_BITS_Newly_Edited..html -or- http://www.castlecops.com/postlite106642-.html [i wrote it -- I would have posted the entire set of instructions here, but I wasn't sure if I could upload the Zip file with the Registry fixes on this N.G., so anyone could subsequently download it. However, the necessary File ready for downloading, along with the lengthy instructions, are all located at the above link.] If the above link doesn't work, go to: http://castlecops.com/ Click "Forums" right below the Castlecops logo, then go to the "General Computer Proble…

Windows update doesn't notify of updates
by Guest Mark Bourne- 5 replies

Using Windows Vista Business 32-bit, I have Windows Update set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". I almost always log on as a standard user, rather than as an administrator, using UAC to elevate to the admin account when necessary. However, Windows Update does NOT pop up a message from the system tray while logged on as a standard user when updates are available, like it does if I log in as an administrator (which I very rarely do). Is there a fix for this? Thanks, Mark.

Microsoft Update: What is the status of the svchost problem?
by Guest AlanB- 1 reply
A few months ago I had a computer (running XP) that slowed to a crawl after installing Microsoft Update (as opposed to Windows Update). An svchost process would utilise 99% CPU. The fix for this problem involved two downloaded patches and I think at least one of these has now been incorporated into a routine update. Do I still need to intervene when this problem is suspected or will applying the routine updates now take care of it?

Excessive Long wait for Windows Update
by Guest TeddRi- 0 replies

I have been used the normal windows update site located at http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us to update my Windows XP Professional SP2 and noticed that even on a clean DSL link that is normally around 1.6 mbps, that this takes about 3-4 mins just to let me know if any updates are available. Is this normal these days ? Seemed that it was far faster before. Time does not seem to vary based on time of day or amount of updates that it has. Thanks !

Problems installing Security Update KB928366
by Guest mangosteen- 8 replies

Running XP for the past 4-5 weeks, when I click on the yellow shield to install updates, it downloads, then supposedly installs, but the yellow shield never disappears/clears. I have gone directly to MS Update website several times, done Express updates numerous times, rebooted numerous times, still yellow shield. When I go to MS update site, I am directed to download install the following: "Security Update for Microsoft. NET Framework Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366)" Download history shows the same update (KB928366) has been installed about 8 times in the last 4 days. I thought I was running Service Pack 2. Am concerned that my security is not up …

REPLRES.RLL Error Message
by Guest gkrane@gmail.com- 1 reply

I was recently having an error message about a corrupt SQL server. I uninstalled part of the SQL package, and then ended up just disabling SQL on startup. That fixed the SQL error message, but now when I startup, I get an error that says "Cannot load resource dll:REPLRES.RLL. The specific module could not be found." This also pops up periodically while running the computer. I have tried searching for a solution on the internet, but have not found anything. If anyone knows of something I could try, I would greatly appreciate the advice! Thanks, -Greg
