I have WinXP Pro SP2. 1) Installing via Automatic Updates KB923694 keeps popping up in my Automatic Updates notifications. I installed it and Automatic Updates says that it was successfully installed. When I check my Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs list, KB923694 is not listed. 2) Installing via Microsoft Updates When I check "Review your update history" on the online Microsoft Update webpage, I have several entries (more than 5) saying that KB923694 was successfully installed from Automatic Updates. When the online Microsoft Update checks for updates for my compu, it doesn't find KB923694 as needing to be installed. 3) Installing by dow…

RE: Error number: 0x80070020

If anyone out there has Spybot Search & Destroy and while trying to run Windows update you receive the error number 0x80070020 and this message: "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page". I corrected the problem in my computer. It was the "Tea Timer" in Spybot S&D. Bring up Spybot S&D and click on mode.....then select advanced mode....click yes in the pop up box. Then click tools at lower left....then click resident.....then uncheck the Resident "Tea Timer" box. X out and that should do it and hopefully most will be able to get the Windows updates. You can go back after updating and put "Tea Timer…

Windows Update broken
by Guest Kaitlyn Luna- 1 reply

I'm using Win2000Pro and I have all updates installed through mid-July 2007. I installed IE6SP1 from an official MS CD-ROM. WU has been broken for over a month now. In July I was asked to install an update to Windows Update. I did that and then installed the other updates available. This was the final time WU worked. The next time I tried to get updates I was told there was an Active X problem. I was given the opportunity to redownload and reregister the WU components. I did that, but it didn't help. I rebooted and still had the same problem. Next I tried to reinstall IE using the same CD-ROM I had used before. No errors were reported, but WU was …

My Movie Maker file was corrupted. Since it was available on the web, I tried to delete it, without success. Now I've dorked the program on my computer (When I go to change / remove files, Movie Maker doesn't show up. So, I opened the file and deleted it's contents. Now, I am caught in the same loop that I'm hearing here. Go to this site, click on the link, get redirected to the update site, update, go back to the link, get sent back to the update site, back out on a web search - tons of information on "how to" - NOTHING worthwhile on reload. I suppose I can order the disk. Seems foolish when the program is "available" on the web. Help? -- nr …

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. I am stuck in an endless loop with an error code of 800703F9. I have searched Google and Microsoft support and that error code does not come up. Has anybody seen it before or have any idea how I might fix this problem? There were about 3 updates which always gave me that error. Now, windows wants to update Windows update, but I am stuck in a loop and it won't update. Thanks for any help you can offer me. Jeff

by Guest shellybi- 2 replies

I'm a good little person, I run with User privileges through the day on my Vista box. I am finding, though, that whenever I attempt to download a group of updates from the Catalog site (from the basket), and I get the http://test.catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/DownloadDialog.aspx Download Options separate IE window, where you are supposed to enter a folder. I cannot type in a folder location, I have to click on the Browse button to the right of that field. When I do, UAC kicks in and demands the administrators password. Once that is entered the entire download process disappears, and I can never get this updates. Now, why oh why on earth wo…

On my new laptop with Vista Home Premium, WMP fails (locks up) after every Vista update. I have had the computer for two weeks and have had to use System Restore a dozen times to get WMP back for presentations. Even when I disable the automatic updates, one got through anyhow and I had to use the System Restore. Is there an answer (other than upgrading to Windows XP)? Joe B

So I have this computer, bought brand new four months ago, back for repairs 7 times so far. Lately it has been having "software" problems. At least this is what the shop says. They only warrenty hardware... I admit to not knowing a motherboard from a power supply (both which have been replaced). Anyways, everything runs great, then one of those automatic windows updates comes along and kaboom! It updates and restarts. But here is the problem, the computer can't restart. It will proceed as far as the little green bar and the it goes into sleep mode. The Windows memory diagnostic tool says -hardware problems detected. I also get- windows failed to…

Using Scanstate to transfer files back to XP
by Guest Mike.ONeal- 0 replies

I am working on Windows Vista certification and have transferred files with Windows Easy Transfer (WET) and User State Migration Tool. WET went flawlessly using a USB memory key. Using Loadstate and Scanstate was a little tricky transferrring files from XP to Vista, but finally got it done. My question is about the errors I'm getting in attempting to transfer files from Vista to XP. It's stated it's possible to do this using the switches "/i:MigSys.xml" and "/targetXP". However, I am getting an error stating that this can't be done from Vista to XP. Any help would be appreciated. -- Mike O.

Update for Windows Media Player for Windows XP (KB939683).
by Guest Sumlin- 3 replies

XP SP2. All critical updates in place. Windows Media Player 11.05.5721.5230. This Update is downloaded but will not install. Message: 'The following updates were not installed - KB939683.' No error code displayed. I don't believe this update to be important but the installation tries to proceed at each re-boot and is becoming an irritant. Any suggestions please to either make the update install or premanently block it?

I am new to using WSUS and had a question on cancelling an update. Yesterday I had a suer who was having some issues getting an update and I wanted to cancel the deployment to him. How is this best done. From what I have seen in prior posts you need to stop the update service on the users PC and clean out the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder. Is this correct? -- adebratto

I have Windows Vista. My security software keeps telling me I have an error and I am not protected. I've tracted this to the kb936181 update. Update history tells me this update was a successful install on 8/15. It was suggested that I uninstall this update and then download it again, but the uninstall page does not list this update at all. Where do I go from here? -- sbglskj
