XP SP2 won't install unless on AC
by Guest Karen- 2 replies

Hi, I'm running XP-Home on a Toshiba Satellite A45-S121, which I've recently reformatted with the factory disk. I'm now unable to install SP2 as the "Power Saver" utility is messed-up and indicates I am running on battery (even when the battery is removed!). I've been unable to get the problem fixed or addressed by Toshiba, even though it's a known issue on OTHER models. So I'm wondering if there's any way to get SP2 through another means. Does anyone know if I can obtain it on disk or from a different source which doesn't have the "must be on AC" component? Thank you kindly, Karen BTW: I reformatted and updated this same way last April and di…

Windows Update won't install updates after Repair Install
by Guest Avacar- 14 replies

Hi everyone, I keep seeing people aluding to this problem, but never a definite solution. I am running Windows XP SP2, and just did a 'repair install' off the CD (ie it copies over all the key windows files again, but leaves everything else). As you are all probably aware, this replaces any updates. Now, Windows Update (both the automatic client and the website version) identify some 83 updates that I need again, however both fail because "A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed". now they download just fine it's the install step that holds it up. Any ideas/suggestions? Thank you, Alex

I tried installing 8 updates this morning, and 3 failed with the error code: 80070002 so I followed the following steps: To stop the Windows Update service You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps. 1. Open Administrative Tools by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Administrative Tools. 2. Double-click Services. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 3. Right-click the Windows Update service, and then click Stop. Error code 0x80070005 for Update KB898461
by Guest Macmoose- 1 reply

Recently had to re-install Windows XP. Now, Microsoft would like to have me install all kinds of updates. Unfortunately, a critical update (KB898461) fails to install. I've read the user forum and tried the apparently usually successful strategy of renaming spudsvc.exe - didn't work. I've tried manually downloading the update file and installing - didn't work. I know this is Windows, which almost by definition means "it doesn't work". Nevertheless, I'm getting kind of frustrated. Does anyone have a clue what I might try to get this update downloaded and installed?

Thanks very much. I've been messing around with this for awhile, without much success. I've tried most of the other "fixes" suggested on this forum without success. Just read yours, followed the procedure you suggested (I renamed the files rather than delecting them) and it worked like a charm. Thanks again. Hi, My update have not worked as of 7/14/2007 with vista. I have searched the microsoft site and also have search numerous other sites looking for the answer why. I have also tried to remove the reg in cmd (a fix on your site) with no luck. Also with my problem and soulutions in the control panel, a trouble report has been sent to microsoft almost every day and it always comes back with no solution or fix. I guess I am just looking for a straight forward answer. Is microsoft working on this issue to try and find a patch or fix that will work ? Thank you for your time !!!

Using Windows Pic and Fax Viewer
by Guest Woody- 8 replies

Hi. A friend brought this to my attention and we have a question.....when dowloading a picture attached to a email and we open it, it comes up in the windows pic and fax viewer screen. The red arrows let you go forward or backward to other pics and such that I guess we have looked at somewhere either thru our email attachments or just from being on a site. These images can be anything from a pic or a symbol or even a blank screen. When we click on the red X in the bar below it asks us if we want to delete this image and when we do it deletes it and sends it to the recycle bin. My question is I assume somehow these images get stored on our com…

System: Windows Vista Ultimate fully updated, Intel E6600, Nvidia 7600GT, 4Gb Ram, one LCD VGA and one lcd via DVI etc, nothing is over clocked Problem: I built this system 6 months ago and it has been running perfectly since. On August 27th my system tried to automatically update the existing Nvidia driver from Windows Update (groan, I know, I’ve changed it and will never let this happen again). My previous driver had been working perfectly. I was at work and came home, my system was unstable, I was getting TDR’s, artefacts on screen and before I could really work out what was going on my system crashed with BSOD on nvlddmkm.sys error 116. HELP I continuously get the little yellow shield for "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install." I've installed during the day, at night when I turn the compter off, I've even gone to Microsoft to check for updates and these two updates will not install. Other updates seem to install okay. I have no idea on how to install these two updates.

During a Windows update I received an error message that the security update for Microsoft.Net.Framework Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB929729) failed to install. Error message # 80070643. I followed instructions to open Administrative tools--double click Services and look for Office Source Engine. I do not have an OSE in the list. Is this because I uninstalled the preinstalled Microsoft Office 3 Trial Version? I prefer WordPerfect. If so, how do I stop these updates from trying and failing? -- Judy
