100% CPU Usage
by Guest BobT- 3 replies
My CPU has been @ 100% for several days now. Last time this happened, there was a large update from Microsoft that took a long time to download & install, but this seems excessive. There were several updates downloaded on 7.14.07, and a small one a couple of days ago. Any troubleshooting help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Bob (Dell Dimension 8200, 768MB RAM, DSL)

I have a Dell XPS 410 Desktop with Vista Home Premium. If I try to use Windows Update, Dells Update, or Microsoft Update I get an error that the file does not have an association set for it. I have installed a REGistry Fix to restore the registry and the exe shows to have an association set to it (msapps/wupdate or something like that) but I am still unable to update and get the same error. If I go to Microsofts update page the error still pops up. Any one have any ideas???

WSUS3
by Guest justmark- 6 replies

I have a fresh install of WSUS3 on a Win2003 SP2 server (freshly-built). Everything seemed to go well and I ran into no problems during the install. All of my clients are checked in and I've configured several groups for them, based on location and function. I turned on Automatic Approval for critial updates. Now that it seems that everything's configured and operational, I'm testing... I've made a new group and put my workstation into it. I've approved some updates for myself and forced the issue with "wuauclt.exe /detectnow". But nothing happens... I also see that some workstations are due for critical updates, but they're not being notified either. …

by Guest wallyd- 13 replies

I have Windows XP Home SP2 that came pre-installed on my Dell Dimension 3000 two and a half years ago. I tried going to the Windows Update page a few days ago and got the message: "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page", error 0x80070570. I saw the last update list on the program files list was a Hotfix (KB908673). I think this problem with Updates is a new one. What do I do?

I was doing a Windows Update and got 2 errors, the first one said: Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0x1260 (4704), Thread id=0x1320 (4896) Click OK to terminate the application Click Cancel to debug application. So I clicked on Cancel and got the following error: Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0xa04 (2564), Thread id=0xa94 (2708). Click OK to terminate the application Click Cancel to debug application. Again I clicked on Cancel to debug, but nothing ever happened. So I did a system restore and tried again with the same result - now the update is downloaded, but won…

Can we force a vista patch to reinstall if it is already installed
by Guest Mansur_Farooq- 6 replies
I am trying to install the Vista patch(KB929123) on a machine which already has the patch installed. It is telling me that the patch is not applicable to the system. Is there a way to skip the check that the OS does to see if the patch is already installed and force reinstallation of the patch? I am having a problem with the return code being 1 in both cases where: 1) A patch is already installed on Vista 2) A patch requires a component which is missing. I want to be able to differentiate between the two situations so is it possible for me to force reinstallation of a patch which may already be installed on a Vista machine?

Installing Vista over old XP
by Guest ElGordo- 4 replies

Have a HD with 2 partitions. One had XP installed, but when I had to replace the motherboard, the OS had to be re-registered and this wasrefused as I had done it several times due to virus/etc. I didnt want to fight this as my XP was quite old and I bought Vista Home Premium. How can I install it. On booting up I get the old XP that doesnt let me get started. If I boot from the dvd, an error message comes up and back to XP again. I want to get the vista onto the c drive and leave the second partition intact. If I have to I can clear the whole HD, but would prefer an easier way. Gordon

Boiling down a problem to the simplest, single issue – my XP professional installation is not correctly installed and is not working correctly. The causes of this situation are faulty tech support, multiple repairs and fixes – almost all made thing worse. Both Microsoft auto update and Windows Live OneCare state there is an important security update that needs to be installed. When I allow auto update or OneCare to perform the update – it fails. The error messages are as follows: 1. Security Update For Microsoft XML Core Service 4.0 Service Pack2 (kb936181 or kb916281) not installed. 2. Security Update For Cumulative Security Update Internet …

Windows XP Updates installing automatically when option disabled
by Guest Anothernetworknewbie- 16 replies

I have set my Windows XP Update option to only download updates once I have reviewed the updates. I have used Windows XP for 2/3 years now and generally consider the experience disastrous. I have not had so many problems running my own PC (hanging, crashing etc.) since the mid 1980s. I also consider some of the updates a violation of my privacy and could cause big problems with other software on my PC (eg. Explorer 7 is not compatible with eBay's Turbolister 2 which I use extensively in the on-line selling part of my business). However, I often find Windows XP Updates install themselves automatically anyway (and automatically reboot my machine at incon…

I've tried on many occasions to download and install Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 even though it goes through the whole process of downloading and installing, it keeps telling me that it is still remaining and that it's downloaded and not installed, my update history does mainly consist of 3.1 installer and says it was successful. Everytime i check for new updates it still says i need to download and install the 3.1 installer and that download time is 0.0 and size is 0.0. Can anyone help me please?
