Hi, I ran windows update yesterday on my system, running Windows XP Pro, restarted the system as requested. Since the restart I cannot get a connection to the internet, I am connected on ethernet, the LAN status says connected and DHCP assigns IP but cannot get onto any webpage? The status display states packet exchange for both send and receive.

KB938979 Confirming Correct Installation
by Guest elziko- 0 replies

I did have a problem installing this update but I have now managed to get it to install after recreating all my moved 'c:\users' folders as described in other earlier threads. Obviously I now what to confirm that it was actually installed correctly. However, when I look at the list of file names & versions listed for the update in the KB article to confirm it was installed correctly I get confused! Taking a look at the first file on the list 'Aithui.dll': ....in my system32 folder I get v6.0.6000.16513 which doesn't seem to be the one mentioned in the KB article. However I do have the correct version listed in: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Do…

Hi All, I've just recently done an XP repair and now find that I can't download windows, office or defender updates. It appears that this might be due to the BITS not being started. I have tried to manually start it but get the message: "Could not start Background Intelligence Transfer Service service on local computer" "Error 1083: The executable program that this service is configered to run in does not implement the service" Can anyone help me please? Thanks for any responses. Cheers Buster

by Guest jettmorrison- 5 replies

Installed a Microsot update for the D-Link - Networking - D-Link DGE-530T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter today. Afterward, I lost all connection to the Adaptor. I eventually uninstalled the D-Link Driver, rebooted and then Windows 'Acquired Network Address'. So then I was connected. On next reboot, the same problem. No connection, can't repair the connection, can't locate an IP Address (even tried dos ipconfig/release...ipconfig/renew to no avail.). What the heck did the update do to my D-Link Hardware? It's a real nuissance having to disable my adapter and reboot just to use the internet. System: Windows XP professional sp2 Dell Dimension 8100 D-Link -…

Critical Updates Crashed My PC
by Guest Sn2000py- 2 replies

Hello, last Friday--Aug. 24th my PC was working fine as usual. I have a 4 year old Dell that has caused me no problems what-so-ever. MSN has caused me problems, but not the computer itself. Friday night, I did a tune-up with Windows Live One Care. Everything was fine, except it could not check for critical updates, since I wasn't connected to the internet at the time. I only am connected when I use the internet, since I have dial-up and one phone line only. I also do not have my PC on unless I'm using it. Saturday night, I went to download the critcal updates of the week. I believe there were 4 or 5 that week. I always do my critical updates when need…

Hello, I realized that 938979 failed to install after a few restarts. I tried to Stop the Windows Update and BITS services, delete temporary update files and start the WU and BITS services as described in the help, but it didn't solve my problem. I also tried to download and manually install the update. Now I can see that the installation status for the update is Successful in my update history however, Windows Update still tries to install the update and fails. Under Programs and Features > Installed Updates I can not see the 938979 update. I also tried to install the update after disabling Norton 360 but it did not help either. Thanks in …

by Guest Karlerm- 4 replies

Yesterday I allowed an unpdate from Microsoft Update called, "IVT Corporation - Other Hardware - Bluetooth Wireless Hub" along with a couple other updates. Now I my dell wireless keyboard won't connect and I cannot enable the checkbox to "Turn discovery on". I get an error message that says, "An error occurred while Windows was saving your settings. The following settings were not saved: Discoverability settings Connection settings" It sounds like the file or place used to save the settings is locked or corrupted. Does anyone know where the settings are saved? Also, how can I uninstall an update? Thanks.

by Guest Sam- 2 replies

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro with the latest MS Security Updates installed. My computer is operating without any difficulty. After using the Dougs XP Remove Hotfix Backup removal applet this morning, I noticed that there are still four backups listed under the Windows folder. They are as following: $MS131Uninstall_KB893803v2$ $NtUninstallKB917734_WMP9$ $NtUninstallKB925398_WMP64$ $NtUninstallKB936782_WMP9$ Would it be safe for me to manually delete the above list of four entries from the Windows folder? Also listed in the Add/Remove, Control Panel, are the following: Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) Security Upd…

Unable to get rid of update installation reminder
by Guest Sam P- 3 replies

I am running XP Home (Service Pack 2). My automatic update is telling me there is one update ready to install. I accept this and am then told that the installation has been successful, but then a few minutes later the update icon reappears. I have accessed Windows Update website and run a manual update scan, and am told that there is one critical upate (the same as the one in the icon) - I download it, receive the message that it has installed successfully, but the icon still remains. I have been running ZoneAlarm Internet Security (v7) and the free AVG virus software with no problems up to now. However, I have just dowloaded the free version of PC …

Article that may explain1

I just got this in from TechRepublic, this is going to affect all Windows users, I think. http://news.com.com/2100-7350_3-6205191.html?tag=nl.e019. Do you think this is the cause of all the problems that are occurring with the updates. I have been using Microsoft Baseline Sercurity Analzyer 2.0 to update my computer and I am not having any trouble with doing it that way. But IE7 still freezes up when I am browsing the web. I got a reply from support yesterday, and done all the steps to correct the problem that we are all having and could not fix the problem and then today this article came. What's up with this? -- gerry1

Update Restart & Defender
by Guest livetohike- 8 replies

Running XP. Sorry for bundling multiple questions, but they are all related. Even if you can only answer 1, please don't hesitate to reply. 1) I use FireFox not IE, does Defender still apply? 2) Do I need this if I already have AVG (Free), SpyBot-SD Resident, Ad- Aware, etc.? Does it add anything of value. 3) I always worry when I see "real-time". Does this thing slow down my computer all the time, or only when it does its nightly scan. 4) Why do the updates come so frequently? Do new threats really appear every 2-3 days? 5) It is a free MS product ... should I even bother w/ it? 6) Each MS Update requires a restart, a real pain. Any way aroun…
