Aero? DreamScene?
by Guest Robert Lee- 2 replies
Okay, so I went to animate my desktop background via Control Panel>Appearance and Personalization>Personalization>Desktop Background, I chose 'Windows DreamScene Content' in the 'Location' drop-down menu, chose a sample video, then a dialogue box above the taskbar told me 'Windows DreamScene Cannot Start' because 'Windows DreamScene can only run when Windows Aero scheme is selected.' So I hunt around with search and finally end up on the Microsoft Help area which tells me that Aero is part of the Vista Ultimate package. So I think, "O.K. Why won't it run then?" (No Answer) So then I find out that I have to download the 'DreamScene Preview' from …

Does anyone know if there is a directory that has all the .exe files from the windows updates installed? Or if there is a directory that lists all of the update numbers? I need to get the .exe files to follow a tutorial, and I can't find the correct directory if there is one.

Re: Lockups after installing Microsoft Updates on 8/9/05
by Guest Kiss_WinLinOSX- 0 replies

I get constant lockups now after the last 2 weeks. I assume it is the driver updates. And yes it appears to be the networking updates. The only problem is that I downgraded the network driver (nforce 4 eth) to the previous version and still get the lockups. This is on Vista. Windows Updates Fail When Downloading
by Guest Mark M Morse- 4 replies

I tried to update a notebook running Windows 2000 yesterday. I've updated this system at the Windows Update web site for two years without incident. Yesterday, everything appeared normal up to the point where the critical updates were downloading. Each of the six update downloads ended with "Failed!" instead of "Done!". The problem is the same today. Does anybody know what might cause this? I did not do anything different, and the system has not been used since its update last month.

Can I automatically cache Windows Update on my local network
by Guest najevi- 3 replies
I have recently kicked the tyres on ubuntu linux and am immediately impressed by the ease with which apt-cacher was setup to locally cache the many and varied optional software packages and package updates. This is a huge bandwidth saving on my broadband connection which is also utilized for VOIP telephony. My monopolistic Australian ISP is infamous for metering downloaded data and imposing speed shaping after a certain monthly threshold is reached, so locally caching these packages for reuse on subsequent reinstalls or for reuse by other hosts on the local network is a further benefit. As I type this I am enduring a shaped 'broadband' connection of 64…

windows vista update - KB937143
by Guest Ozzy- 3 replies

Several days ago I've updated vista and after restarting computer I was not able to see the web pages in IE7. But I saw data transfer in both direction, when I've checked the connection status. First I tried to fix the problem in IE7 (nothing ), then I decide to uninstall updates (by starting OS and security upgrades) one by one to find the reason of the problem. And after uninstalling KB937143 my problem has solved, start to see the web pages. But I think, uninstalling updates is a temporal solution (unless turning automatic update off), so I need a permanent solution. Is there anyone who have an answer?

After update Msxml3.dll unregistered
by Guest Claudia- 5 replies
Since installing the Windows auto updates l8/14, I cannot open my application QuickBooks 2007 Premier. I get an error message that references Msxml3.dll which is now unregistered and I cannot manage to re-register it. The Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181) seems also to have made it impossible for me to use the Update process anymore. I have tried everything I could and the QB support folks weren't able to help either. My desktop is not networked and I run Win2000.

I did a fresh installation of vista ultimate this morning and activated it successfully. I am able to connect to the internet. I tried to run windows update and got a message that windows update itself first needs to be installed. I clicked through but it doesn't work and I get the same error code 8007000b. How is this possible?

Updates
by Guest Johnnie Bruce- 0 replies

A few nights ago when I clicked off the computer I was advised of some 12 upgrades were being installed. The computer then turned off. The next morning when I logged on a window appeared called UPDATE MANAGER. I clicked OK only to find it required a disc to instal (what I don't know). Then an error window popped up Error 1706. With this Update Manager running I couldn't reboot the computer and had to Ctl/Alt/Dlt to get rid of it. It happens every time I log on. I searched Error 1706 only to find I needed Microsoft Windows Installer. When I worked through that I re-installed Windows Explorer downloading version 7.0. It still didn't get rid of the Update Man…

KB921503 already installed but Auto Update wants me to install it
by Guest LemonJoose- 2 replies

I keep getting the yellow Auto Update shield in my system tray prompting me to dowload and install KB921503, but since I prefer to get updates through the Windows Update website, when I go there it says there are no critical updates to be installed, and when I look in Windows Update history, it says KB921503 is already installed. I'm using Windows XP SP2 with all critical updates installed.

I recently had my computer returned after being 'fixed'. Now updates download but will not install. There are 76 updates all of which are empty (0kb)??? Obviously if there is nothing to install then nothing will be installed. I would like to know how this is and what can I do. The shop that repaired the PC said they tried everything! My version of XP is genuine. -- gflashman

Anyone found out which update crashes programs using internet?
by Guest viwind- 5 replies
Hello, Just yesterday my system was updated with the patches. Today, any application that tries to connect to Internet crashes. IE says there's a network problem (there isn't) and when I close it, it crashes. Firefox says the same and when I close it, it also crashes. Windows live messenger tries to connect and fail and it crashes when I click Repair button. I can ping other servers (eg. google.ca) but I can't seem to use internet. I can browse local network machines. Does anyone know which update? It installed 3 updates yetserday and if anyone had same experience and rolled back an update to fix, please let me know. thanks!
