After reinstalling Windows XP, SP2 because of a hard drive failure, how can I get windows update not to pop up with the message that the computer has to be restarted for updates to install, restart now or restart later and this keeps popping up every 5 minutes, rather than installing when computer is turning off? -- Pat C.

KB937986 failed, kept wanting to reinstall, + solution
by Guest Lucvdv- 0 replies
MS Update kept telling me it needed to install KB937986 (Security update for Virtual PC 2004 and Virtual PC 2004 SP1), and all attempts to install kept failing. The contents of KB937986.log in E:\Temp were: Resource copy failed from E:\Temp\Virtual PC.exe to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual PC\Virtual PC.exe The file E:\Temp\VirtualPC.exe was there (it wasn't even deleted after the failed install), and the path on C: is the correct destination. The version on E: was 5.3.0.583, that on C: was version 5.3.0.582, so the copy operation was really failing. I immediately suspected that it failed because my Temp directory is on another drive, and…

Unable to log into my administrator account!
by Guest Julian B- 0 replies
Well, it's pretty much as it sounds. After the 08/15-07 update, I'm not able to log into my administrating account due to, what Microsoft describes as safetyrelated problems and possible broken files... I get this message in a small box right after writing my password. A new box then appears, saying that the computer will create a temporary account which does not save ANY changes made while logged in. I am certainly no expert on computers, so I would really appreciate any sort of help that could end my miseries... Thank You.

svchost still consuming CPU after boot
by Guest MG- 20 replies

I've read many posts regarding the lengthy start-up issues associated with svchost and MS updates - mine appears somewhat different. After booting up, and after all services have started, my machine runs through cycles of CPU - viewed on Task Manager these spkies are typically around 40% of CPU, sometimes higher, and are occurring on a very consistent cycle, around every 6-8 seconds. This happens even with nothing open on my machine. I've run all the scans to check for viruses and spyware. I can see that these processes running are within svchost.exe and/or services.exe. I've tried shutting down everything that is in my startup and the problem still …

Hi I ran live updates this morning when I came into work (on my VAIO running XP). Connected to the Wireless network here as usual using the Intel PRO/Set Wireless adaptor. Tried to access the Internet using IE 7.0 - couldn't get a site. Tried to access using Firefox - couldn't get a site. Tried Safari for PC - worked fine! So I have just unistalled the latest security updates for XP and IE and it is working again. Any ideas anyone? Please reply direct if you like to simon.brookes@gmail.com.

Problems with "Windows Genuine Advantage" module after today's upd
by Guest Edward Ripley-Duggan- 4 replies
This morning, I found a substantial group of Windows XP, Media, and Explorer updates indicated as needing download in the tray. I duly ran these. Immediately after rebooting, my machine (a Dell Dimension 5150) became unstable. Upon booting into my desktop, an error message appeared indicating that there was an error in the Windows Genuine Advantage Module. More distressingly, I was from then on unable to run *any* programs. I went into safe mode and rolled back the system 24 hours. I restarted and my machine ran in a stable fashion. I then re-downloaded only the four specific Windows XP patches, as I consider these to be the most crucial since I don't use IE or…

Have to install ALL critical updates in order to be updated?
by Guest RonBiggs- 2 replies
On another machine of mine, I can see in the Add/Remove Programs dialog list that so many Windows updates are eating up a hefty chunk of space. Is there a way to tell if one of the updates is a "roll up" of several updates, or do we simply have to sacrifice the space and install every single one in order to be updated? I've just re-installed Windows XP on this machine, and there are 16 critical updates, none of which is SP1 or SP2. Short cuts? Advise? Thanks!

All of our Production servers recieved Approve updates last night?
by Guest Client Domain Switching between organiz- 0 replies

All of our Production servers recieved Approved updates from WSUS server last night 8/16/07 at 3:00AM, when they were scheduled for Sat. 8/18/07??? This is very strange... why would the schedules be changed? I dont see any info. on the WSUS server console that would indicate a problem? Approved updates for Servers Group set for 8/18/2007. I checked on a few of the server clients c:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log and I am seeing 'Forced install timer expired for scheduled install.' What would have forced all servers to receive updates early? 2007-08-16 02:24:27:627 1280 10e0 AU >>## RESUMED ## AU: Search for updates [CallId = {19074487-…

RE: system failure after automatic update on 8/15/07
by Guest marv6- 0 replies

The 08-14-07 Auto updates apparently changed some settings in my Newwork and sharing center and I could not login until I ran diagnostic and asked for an IP address and then it immediately connected but keeps trying to find a public connection. The little circle in Vista keeps spinning but lets me connect until I restart the computer and then there is an X by the network. I am set to Private connection but it wants to make a public connecton. I have to run diagnostics each time I start the computer. So, I went to restore and restored to back to before the 08-14 updates. Had to use safe mode to get it to work and the problem is gone, but so are the 10 …

Stopping unwanted Vista critical updates
by Guest Paul_Trev- 0 replies
Does anyone know how to stop unwanted Vista updates? I previously had Office 2007 trial on my PC. I uninstalled it properly using the add/remove programs feature in Windows Vista and installed Office 2003 instead. Critical updates provides me with both 2003 and 2007 Office updates. I de-select Office 2007 and install only the Office 2003. But next time critical updates load, the unwanted 2007 updates are back again. In XP when you de-select a critical update you then have a confirmation box come up that says "don't ask me about these again". You check the box and you never get bugged about the unwanted updates again. Does Vista have this feature or someth…

Vista: never-ending updates, can't log in
by Guest Rich- 0 replies

When I was at work, my vista ultimate must have restarted. Now I can't get past the log-in screen. Every time I try to log in by clicking my name, I get the "Welcome" and then "Logging off". Then I noticed that there was an option to install updates. Tried that. Installed 5 updates. When I restarted, after configuring updates, I got back to the signin screen. Click my name, "Welcome" then back to "Logging off". Then I noticed AGAIN that there are updates. This time, it installed 3 updates. After all that, same "Welcome" "Logging off" sequence. AGAIN updates. 4 this time. Same results. Then 3. Same results. Then 5. Just tried again. 5 mo…

by Guest John- 6 replies

I have 4 windows user logins on my home machine running XP home. After the the latest auto-updates (August), I'm only able to log in using my own user profile. The others hang up after trying to log in. I went back to a restore point and all was well until the auto-update did it's thing again. Did another restore with the internet cable unplugged and turned off the auto update feature. Plugged the cable back in and everybody is back on board except now I can't update the machine for fear of losing my other users and all their email, etc. Oh, I can't even create a new user. I get the same problem with newly created users after the update. Is thi…

USB Device keeps reinstalling after latest Windows Update
by Guest dmilleville- 0 replies

I have an HP Officejet 6100 series fax/printer. After the latest update, if I plug my memory stick into the USB port, Windows pops up another window stating it is starting the configuration routine for this other (6100) USB device. It didn't do this before when I plugged in my memory stick. Is this a problem with the update or is this now normal?

Cannot install updates
by Guest John Aldrich- 4 replies

I have a user who I just upgraded to Windows XP Pro from XP Home. For some reason, it won't install *any* Windows updates. According to Windows Update history, the last update that was installed was the Microsoft Installer update last Sunday (August 11th). I upgraded him from home on Friday, so that was the first update. I also manually updated him to IE7 to fix a problem he was having with his internet, and that worked, however, I can't even install the Root Certificates update. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I will try to check back here at least once a day.
