Windows update failing repeatedly
by Guest gensulitor- 5 replies

For a few years now, windows has automatically installed updates in the process of shutting down. Each time it shuts down it installs the same ones, and new ones which accumulates. I'm assuming its installing them over and over again because they fail to install. I tried doing the automatic update downloader//installer and it said: "the following updates were not installed: Security Update for Windows XP (KB920683) Security Update for Windows XP (KB913580) Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531) Security Update for Windows XP (KB920213) Security Update for Windows XP (KB926255) Update for Windows XP (KB922582) Security Update for Windows XP (KB93216…

Me, Too--More Information

I have the exact problem and have been unable to find a solution, including using one of my free support issues w/ Microsoft. Here's what I experience: 1. In May I was prompted to install a single update and accepted. When I shut down the computer I saw the "Installing 1 update...do not shut down your computer...it will shut down automatically" message. However this message was still in place the next morning. I had to do a hard shutdown (holding down my power button). From that point onward loggin on after powering up took considerably longer than previously. (Sorry...don't remember what update it was.) 2. I was recently offered about five updat…

I'm having a problem with windows update after upgrading my WIndows XP from SP1 to SP2. When I activate Windows Update ( manual or automaic mode) It returns the list of component software that must be updated. It download all files but it fails to execute upgrades. I have Vista Home Premium 64bit and everytime I install this new performance update KB938979 my network connections goes dead. The network icon at the tray menu says "The dependancy service or group failed to start" when I put mouse cursor on it and when I go to Services menu in the Control Panel the network services are not started. When I try to start for example Network List Service I get an error "Windows could not start the Network List Service on Local Computer Error 1068: The dependancy service or group failed to start." Everything goes back to normal when I uninstall this update. What's wrong with this KB938979 update?

Updates: the simple fix for me.
by Guest sdlomi2- 2 replies

I'm no techie, but I read a lot last week when we were having various trouble-symptoms after installing anew or re-installing Windows XP atop itself. Some cases had ~76 updates we could not install others had ~95 still others had ~ 36 and even as few as 9 and 4. The following is something I tried after finding it on a ng forum. Hope it helps others--if it does, PLEASE read other posts and copy/paste the procedure in answer to them (as well as back here to let others know if it worked for your symptoms or not), as since it was a simple fix for me, it may be also for others. Update Problem
by Guest billf- 0 replies

The last 2 times I received a Vista update (home premium edition) it broke my Outlook software. When I launched the program it stated "Outlook is not your default email program" even though it is set that way in Program Defaults. When I tried to send or receive mail, I received a "Not Implemented" error. I had to insert the Office Professional CD, launch Setup, and select "Repair". The program ran for about 10 minutes, then required a reboot. After that Outlook ran ok. Am I the only one having this problem? Is MS aware of this? Can or will they fix it? ---------------- This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggestions w…

Vista Update says "up-to-date" but it's not
by Guest Ed- 4 replies
After running windows update in vista home premium 32 bit, it says (since july 13th) windows is up-to-date, but really it's not. I am able to download and install the new patches manually, and in the update history it says next to the update that the update was installed succesfully, but why did windows update not find these updates through the windows update program? Doesn't matter if I disable the firewall, proxy, and security software, the update program still says that windows is up to date, when it really is not.

Windows Update improved graphics but lowered preformance
by Guest Adam- 3 replies

In the latest, "Windows Update," I've noticed that many graphics have become smooth and nice (Especially in 3D). But in cost it really lowers the preformance of Windows Media Center to a frame rate that is really terrible. I like to watch TV on my computer and this becomes very annoying. I can use system restore to revert the change, but is there any way that I can keep the change (cause it really looks nice) but not have the annoying frame rate drop?

Windows Media Crash (Urge)
by Guest JCO- 3 replies

Running version 11 on xp pro. Can't run videos or it will just crash media player. All I get is the worthless dialog that comes up and asks if I want to send a report to Microsoft. Is there a repair option that I can do? If not, what are my options? I can't uninstall because it always fails. So I downloaded Media 11 and reinstalled it. The problem still exists.

I too have spent countless hours trying to fix this problem. I read neile's post and it worked perfectly. Including setting the permissions. Oh and I think he ment that the next attempt to install V2 worked not V6. I will never know if just setting permissions would have worked, but as posted it works! Neile...you are the man! When I turn on my computer blank screen. No POST or BIOS etc.
by Guest lukerobin@gmail.com- 2 replies

Hi, I have this problem on my spare computer. Every time I turn the computer on I am presented with a blank screen. No POST or BIOS appears and the led on the monitor is yellow (it turns green when it gets a signal). I recently changed the graphics card from a Nvidia Geforce 4 to a Ati Radeon 9800. I have tried the monitor in the onboard graphics and on the radeon and I still have the same problem. The computer used to work fine. I disassembled the computer a couple of months ago because I was going to use it as a server but decided to reassemble it and sell it on. I have reset the CMOS but still to no avail. I'm really stuck. Please Help.

Update on Windows 2000 in endless loop
by Guest Mike Gale- 1 reply
I am attempting to use Windows Update from IE on a Windows 2000 machine. The program appears to be in an endless loop. It displays "Checking for latest updates for your computer..." for periods up to 10 minutes with green progress indicator. Then it flips to "making sure you have the right version of update". Then repeats. Seemingly endlessly. The program used to work. I currently mostly use the automatic update facility, not via the browser. That works. I have tried to track down a KB article, 193657, but it is unavailable. Any ideas how I get this working again?
