Need Script to Install Updates
by Guest Lady Dungeness- 3 replies

XP Home SP2. There are a lot of post-SP2 updates. Is there a way to make a script to install them all? I could use it in the future if I have to reinstall XP. (I won't install SP3 when it arrives if it contains IE7, and I don't want to go to Vista for at least the next 5 years). Any help with such a script would be great! Where should a dummy start
by Guest Little Engine- 4 replies

To make this short, I lost my computers during a hurricane, then lost them again just recently to a fire. Daughter gave me her old computer a gateway media center and I am wanting to update microsoft. I am so bad at this I didn't even really know what a firewall was much less enable or able it. Where is the best place for dummies like me to get a general knowledge. Right now I am so gun shy because I didn't have enough insurance for my first loss much less a double loss and everything I have now is all I am going to have for a while. If I screw this up by making some kind of mistake-well life will go on but I am going to have to give up on that little en…

I have a brand new dell laptop which has had no other programs installed on it except vista business. I had put spybot and comodod firewall on but had to take them off as they seemed to prevent windows from installing updates. So i've got a blank laptop again. I then proceeded to update vista (14 Updates mostly vista security ones with a couple for the vista mail programe and 2 for .net. Also one Cumulative update for IE 7 which I cannot install otherwise windows will not boot up.) No other program updates !! Now the issue is, I have installed all but the IE 7 one and created a restore point there. Now every now and then when using the laptop for browsi…

XP update files on CD?
by Guest Terry- 1 reply

System information: XP Pro SP2, 256mB RAM 1.2gHz AMD Athlon chip 80gB Western Digital HDD. Everything is about 6 years old. Question: Is there any way to acquire a CD with all WinXP updates published since SP2? OR -- same question in a slightly different light -- is there any way to download the updates file by file, put them on a CD and then install them at my leisure? I recently bought a new WinVHP computer. My objective here is to wipe everything off the old computer and do a clean install of WinXP, which would give me what amounts to two new computers. I have the original retail XP CD and the SP2 CD from Microsoft, but that still leaves hours upo…

Problem connecting to Microsoft
by Guest Alastair121- 2 replies

I bought a new Gateway Laptop with Vista Basic and IE7 pre-installed. It connects to the internet first time with a strong signal but it refuses to connect to:- Microsoft.com Hotmail.com Bebo.com Microsoft updates also do not work because of the microsoft.com above. 95% of all other web sites connect without problems. I connect via a Belkin Wireless router F5D7632uk4 which is used by 4 other PC's and laptops without any problems. 3 are XP and one is Vista Professional. I have tried DRTCP and moved MTU's to 1794 as per the help page but it made no difference. I deleted McAfee and switched off the Microsoft firewall, again no difference …

repeated install upon shut down
by Guest LJB1125- 2 replies
When I shut down, every time I get "installing update 1 of 1". This is EVERY TIME. I looked at my installed programs to see if anything looked suspicious and saw that Microsoft.net Framework 1.1 hotfix (KB886903) was listed. Could this be the problem and if it is how do I stop this? Does anyone have an idea of why this is happening? This is an update put there by Microsoft and is not recognizing it has installed the update and repeats this every time I close down.

I've seen a few posts on this topic but no definitive solutions in this forum. I'm going to start a new post with my problem and as much information as I can provide. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am running XP Pro w/ SP 2 (installed by manufacturer) on a 16 month old HP laptop with 1GB RAM and 2/3 of Hard Drive space remaining. Computer was running flawlessly until mid May. I have updates set to notify me of available updates and I select (usually all of them) and let them install. 1. In May I was prompted to install a single update and accepted. When I shut down the computer I saw the "Installing 1 or 1 update...do not shut down your…

Hi I have now given up i tried installing dot net updates of windows update to get the following errors in turn 0x, 0x643,0x8007F070 etc. So i unistalled all dot net framework using control panel booted and rebooted and rerebooted as requested, as suggested in one of your support documents and used windows installer clean up to clean up. Downloaded dotnet framework redristubutable 1.0 and it fails to install saying it already is installed. So i guess i am going to have to live without dot netframework and think seriously of migrating to linux soon

Windows update will download, but not install
by Guest Bachboy- 9 replies

I upgraded a Windows 2000 box to Windows XP SP2. After the upgrade I ran windows update. Downloaded a ton of critical updates. However when they attempt to load it stops and advises that "some updates could not be installed" I tried installing fewer updates, but no luck. The only things that loaded from the update site were Windows Geniune Advantage Validation tool, Windows Installer 3.1 (kb893803) and Update for Windows (KB898641). No other updates will load. Any ideas? Thanks
