setting WU clients to a MONTHLY (not weekly) schedule

Hello all and thanks for taking a moment to review my post. My organization has several hundred Windows 2000 and 2003 servers that we currently patch manually because of application considerations. Each application has a dedicated maintenance window where the systems engineer assigned to it logs on and visits Microsoft's update site. I hope to install a Windows Update Server to manage these patches. All of the features we need for this solution seem to be present with a single (but very important) exception. I need to have the clients downloading and installing their patches on a once-a-month basis and it appears the only option is to have them look for ne…

Vista Windows Update Taskbar Icon
by Guest Walter Docherty- 3 replies

I've asked this a couple of times in the Vista-specific groups but never received any replies, so I'm trying in here. I'm running Vista Ultimate as a Standard User with UAC turned on. I have Vista set to inform me when new updates are available, but the icon that should be displayed when new important updates are available never shows up in the Notification Area (it is not set to hidden). I have to manually click on Windows Update on the start menu to see if there are any new updates available, and then I can download any updates as normal. If I log on as Administrator, the icon shows up correctly when new updates are available but this is not the way I w…

During Windows Updates for an WinXP,sp2 machine the following error appears: Error ox8024400e. The error page says to just close the browser and try again. Internet searches for this error do not reveal very much, but two sites that did have it listed had the solution as reinstalling WSUS which we are not using. Any other advice on how to resolve this issue would be appreciated. TIA ...

KB936357 installed on a Pentium 4 HT??
by Guest Peter- 1 reply

Why would KB936357 install automatically on "Update Tuesday" (10th) when I do NOT have a "Core 2 Duo" or a "Xeon" processor? I have a Pentium 4 HT @ 3.0ghz. The update installed automatically in both my XP Pro's and my Vista Ultimate. According to a colleague at a forum I use and the following links it should not have installed at all. Fortunately I haven't had any problems but wondered why this would happen. After updates or onecare, restart automated logon
by Guest Davey Nauth- 0 replies

I noticed that I am not happy that when Windows Updates or OneCare updates have completed and restart machine. Vista Ultmate allows to auto logon administrator or administrators group. How do I prevent that if I am away from computer and during updates and restart itself without auto logon itself? It would serious exploit to unauthorisation access by any users. I checked Regedit that there is no autologon. How did Vista automatically log on itself? Much appreciation if you could help please?

I have an XP Home system (Dell Inspiron B130 laptop), SP2 fully patched through last month.I ran the July patches last night (went to Microsoft Update and selected Express). According to MS, the only updates I needed were the Malware Removal Tool (KB 890830), the .Net Framework (KB928366), and an XP update (KB 936357). I also ran the Root Certificate update. All seemed to install without difficulty. I did the reboot requested. Logged back in Microsoft Update which showed all patches successfully installed (confirmed under Add/Remove Programs). I turned the system off. This morning after working with the system, I tried to put the machine into Standy, o…

Blue Screen/ Failed Installs
by Guest GLM- 6 replies

I installed XP Pro SP2 on a new hard drive and cannot install the 65+ updates even one at a time. When Windows restarts there is a momentary blue screen flash [can't read] and then I have to use System Restore via Safe Mode to get the computer to work. I have had to use Restore more than 20 times in the last few days while trying to install 20 different high priority updates separately more than one update using Automatic Updates things really take a long time to restore. I am using a Core Duo Compal notebook with the latest BIOS and everything is fine but Windows update.
