update not installing because of incorrect drive letter
by Guest Raptoruk- 1 reply

updates download but all fail to install, Dell suggest it is because my internal drive is now I: and not C: due to an error that they created on a previous reformat and are now insisiting that the only way is to back up my 500gb hd and reformat and reinstall but this time deactivating the usb controller so that it doesnt allocate the early drive letters to my multi card reader.I am appalled at this prospect of another back up and format isnt there any way to tell the 77 outstanding updates downloaded on my machine where to go ??? All my games install fine on the I: drive without prompting why not xp ?

WSUS 3.0 Locally Published PAckages

I'm trying to import an MS Hotfix into WSUS for deployment to clients. Unfortunately Microsoft haven't released this hotfix to WSUS and it can only be downloaded as an EXE. However I have found an MSDN document (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-US/library/aa970328.aspx) that covers how import an MSP, MSI or EXE into WSUS. Bonus! Has anyone succesfully done this? If so could anyone let me know of any problems they had or point me in the direction of some sample scripts other than the MS sample provided? Thanks

.NET Framwork can't update
by Guest My Favorite Tech- 5 replies

I am being prompted to run updates for .Net Framework 1.1 and 2.0 They are KB928366 & KB928365. Each time they fail. From everything I read, I understand the solution is to remove them and reinstall, however the uninstall fails as well. I keep getting "The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it." I am on a stand alone workstation, not a network (well a small peer to peer), and I am the Admin, and I am running XP- Pro. I have tried to follow all the tech support help I can find, however I can not remove the product, what do I do, short of formatting and reinstalling, which I truly…

Can't seem to install Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework
by Guest BlastOButter42- 2 replies

Hi. I'm having problems installing the Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB928365). When I try to install it either through the Windows Update website or through Automatic Updates, I get a "Some updates were not installed" message which lists that update, and in my history, it gives me error code 0x643. This is occurring on both my computers. On my desktop it's tried to install the update through Automatic Updates 9 times and through Windows Update twice and failed at all of them on my laptop it's tried 17 times with Auto and 4 times with the website and failed at all. I read in this newsgroup about a similar problem with the Sec…

WinXP don't boot because C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is corrupted
by Guest Juan I. Cahis- 1 reply

Dear friends: During a normal boot procedure, I received the following message: "WinXP don't boot because C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is corrupted". I solved the problem, because I use ERUNT daily, so I booted to the recovery console and used ERUNT to restore the Registry. But I have two questions: 1) Why this problem did happen? 2) Which is the methodology recommended by Microsoft to survive in that event, for the majority of users that they don't use ERUNT? Please note that selecting the "last good configuration" did the same error message, which is a logical consequence if you have a corrupted Registry. Thanks Juan I. Cahis Santiago de …

New computer 2 days ago. Initial configuration worked seamlessly. Seems to operate correctly in every other way. Network connectivity verified Internet connectivity verified can ping external IPs. Failed Windows Update the first time I tried it. Upon initiating Windows Update, I get a message that I have to first install an upgrade to Windows Update. When I tell it to install, it fails and gives me Error Message 80240038 saying Windows Could Not Search For New Updates. Can't find this message anywhere on Microsoft or the Internet. The two threads that did reference it were not helpful. Three related notes: 1. Windows Update history shows no updates h…

can i restore the original Windows Update?
by Guest FPS- 3 replies

When I originally used Windows Update in my new Vista computer, it searched for updates to the OS (Vista) only. I since configured it to search for updates to Office as well and would like to restore the original version. (1) Is there any way to DEselect the suggested updates so that they STAY deselected and I'm not reminded constantly to install those updates?, or (2) Can I restore the original Windows Update so that it ceases to search for Office updates and only searches for Vista updates? Help!! I've researched and researched this question without success.

Ok, I have read many posts that complain about automatic updates downloading updates but failing to install them. After spending hours going though microsofts help files i found something that fixes the problem, being that i had the same problem myself. A little incentive there anyways the article doesnt address the problem directly but do the steps and automatic updates will funcion like it should again. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/910359 hope this helps
