Genuine Advantage Validation Tool Problem
by Guest Dave- 3 replies
Why is it every time, and I mean every time, I go to Windows Update it comes back and tells me I have to install the 'Genuine Advantage Validation Tool" (aka MS Spyware) before I can update anything else. This 'Validation' piece of spyware has been installed on all my comps for some time. It shows clearly when updates are listed via the CP, or via the MS update website. Dave (aka disgusted)

RE: [Error number: 0x80070020]

If anyone out there has Spybot Search & Destroy and while trying to run Windows update you receive the error number 0x80070020 and this message: "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page". I corrected the problem in my computer. It was the "Tea Timer" in Spybot S&D. Bring up Spybot S&D and click on mode.....then select advanced mode....click yes in the pop up box. Then click tools at lower left....then click resident.....then uncheck the Resident "Tea Timer" box. X out and that should do it and hopefully most will be able to get the Windows updates. You can go back after updating and put "Tea Timer"…

Need info on update 936357
by Guest Vince- 3 replies

Hello: I was reading about this update. It states that the effected processors are for Core 2 and Xeon processors. So why is it offered as a critical update to any computer with any Intel processor. I run a P4 Prescot. I was reading another post about a person with something other that a Core 2 or Xeon processor having issues after the update was installed. So what might I expect to happen if I install this with my P4 Prescott? I would consider passing on the update since I do not have a listed processor but I am also annoyed that if I do that I will be notified each time I go to windows updates that I have hidden updates that should be installed…

That's what I get when I attempt to search for updates at Microsoft Update. Tried disabling Avast and Quero Toolbar, thinking they might be the culprit. Found two KB articles about this error labeled Solution I and Solution 2, but they both involve proxy settings on a LAN. I have no proxy settings and I have no LAN. I have made repeated attempts to download the latest updates since they came out Tuesday, but always the same result. I am running Windows XP sp2 with IE6.

In my OEM (paid) Dutch VISTA there is in Services.msc no such thing like BITS, nor is there a service with a in dutch translated version of BITS. I followed all advises I could find: no one helps. Yes, in the registry BITS is present. Furthermore I see no way to write a message to the community: ik I click "question" in New, I hear a dry click, buth nothing happens. Can anybody help me, please. Reply to robmeyer@hetnet.nl. Microsoft Update Question NOT Windows Update
by Guest crad- 2 replies

Is anyone out there who is using Vista Ultimate AND Microsoft Update,NOT Windows Update encountering any problems like the ones folks are having with XP? I mean such as the situation where Microsoft Update just keeps looking and looking for updates but never returns any results in XP. I had those problems with XP and had to uninstall Microsoft Update and go back to Windows Update. In Vista, if I do not use Microsoft Update I am unable to get Office 2007 updates. Thanks for any info.

So about a week ago this problem started. Mid-update the computer stopped functioning due to a power outtage and now this thing is FUBAR! Windows update loads, but closes a second later, and when I manually download the updates from the site, the installation says that it doesn't work and is not needed. When I go into devmgmt.msc there is no hardware detected. I have no sound, no battery display for this laptop I'm surprised the keyboard and screen are still working... for now. -- Too nerdy to be a geek Too geeky to care

Software distribution folder & Net Bb928365 update
by Guest RoseW- 1 reply

I uninstalled Net 2. with Add Remove Manually went to Windows Update. The recent KB928365 patch was still recommended and still listed as 'already downloaded' The download was previously deleted from the Software distribution folder. Automatic Update is shut off via Services at the moment. My original error code was 1603 which I think references the MSI exe Mine is the version 3 or the most current. Is there a remnant in the Software distribution folder that holds info that says NET 2 still exists and that the Kb928365 patch is present? May I delete all subfolders in the Software distribution folder? Rose

Ok I've got a strange update problem. Clean install on a HP Pavilion ZV6000 AMD 64 3200 1.5G Ram 40G hardrive. Trying to Test vista out right now. Vista will download and install the updates on shutdown, but I can't check / see the updates menu. If I go to Control Panel / System & Maintenance / Windows Update. All I see is a refresh Icon, a green box / checkmark & two question mark icons. No Text is visible. The updates appear to download, but I can't see any text in the Windows Update page. (Other control panel pages I can see the text though) Anyone ever see (or not see ) ) this problem ? And anyone know the solution to it ? Rea…

IE proxy exceptions for update service(s)
by Guest Norm Allen- 1 reply

Greetings, I am attempting to configure IE (6) on 2K to go to a non-existent proxy server in order to "disable" IE for a tech-impared user with a propensity for turning her machine into a botnet nest. Setting this non-existent proxy should be fine enough to stop her browsing, but I still want Windows updates to come through. What domains / addresses should I set in the exceptions to allow WUAS to function properly? - I have *.microsoft.com as well as *.akamai.net but I'm still getting a 80072EE2 error when trying to browse updates.microsoft.com. Thanks!

Hi, I have a Win2000SP4 workstation with IIS 5.1. Duwamish7 was working on it with no problems. After applying the patch Duwamish7 is not working any longer, as long as a bunch of other web apps. They all show http error 500. Event log shows nothing significant. After I tried running aspnet_regiis from 2.0.50727 folder, it said that it cannot find entrypoint HeapSetInformation in Kernel32.dll. I had similair problems on WinXP SP2. The patch I applied is the following: NDP20-KB928365-X86.exe Signed Microsoft Corporation Wednesday, May 30, 2007 1:44:16 AM.
