Hosting environment which only allows Windows security patches to be installed once a quarter. When accessing the Windows Update site, it is only showing 3 Critical security updates available: Windows 2003 Service Pack 2 IE 7 Windows Malicious Software Tool Removal [KB890830] On a single server, all but IE7 was installed, the server was rebooted, but the other critical security updates are still not showing up. by Guest tcm_crew- 2 replies

I've tried five times to intall this security update, both from "Automatic Updates", as well as from Microsoft's web site, but each time I receive an update failure notification. When I tried to update from microsoft.com, the Excel Viewer 2003 update showed as ZERO bytes, and taking ZERO minutes to install. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. tcm

KB928365 possible solution
by Guest Hipper- 4 replies
My install for this failed, and failed again on a second attempt, so for the third go I decided to disconnect from the internet and shutdown my firewall, anti spyware and antivirus. I then used the shield in the icon tray to start Microsoft Update and as the item was already downloaded, clicked install. And it did! Horay!!! May be I was lucky but it might be worth a try before any more complicated procedure.

Error number: 0x80070005
by Guest Dan9- 1 reply
When I attempt Windows Update, I get the above error number. I've discovered that's an "access denied" message. I tried running %windir%/windowsupdate.log but I get the message: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." I also downloaded Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool 1.7.0039.0, which provides info, but I can't see anything in the results that would lead me to the problem. I've tried the obvious (clear temp files) and the not-so-obvious (deleting files in my Windows\SoftwareDistribution\WebSetup and WuRedir directories), but no luck. Any ideas? I'm dead in the water with my updates.

I say forget about these updates until MS finds a fix. You can set up to ignore these updates at the windows update page or turn off all updates by going to the control panel and clicking on Automatic updates.

Oops, todays update = dead screensaver
by Guest Clive Williams- 0 replies

Dear all, I use a screensaver that I wrote myself in .NET 1.1 whose job is to kill off unnecessary processes (ITunes' Ipodservice, Realplayer update, etc) that vendors in their infinite wisdom choose to make next to impossible to disable permanently. It has worked fine until today's updates, when the call Process.Kill is now throwing a 'permission denied' error. I see nothing explicit in the update release notes to suggest that anything's definitely been locked down in this area, though I can well imagine that it might have been. Can anyone help me confirm what's going on? Was there something in today's updates that would stop a screensaver having the abili…

RE: Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB936507)

Disabling Spysweeper was insufficient to get this update working. Refering to the \Windows\WindowsUpdate.log, there was a key that SYSTEM did not have permission to write to. In my case it was: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\xmlfile\ShellEx\IconHandler By changing the permissions for SYSTEM on the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\xmlfile\Shel from "this key" to "this key and subkeys" the install succeeded through Microsoft Update. by Guest Dan9- 6 replies

It's worked for 3 years, until today. Now, I get: "We've made improvements to our website. To download the new version of the software and begin using Windows Update, please click Install Now." What appears to be a small ActiveX component tries to install and I get the message: "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem." Two other computers in my local workgroup -- an old Windows 2000 server and a co-worker's Windows XP -- got the same message from Windows Update ("We've made improvements to our website. To download the new version of the sof…
