by Guest PRAKASH KUMAR TIWARY- 0 replies

I'm testing various Event logs queries to remote Windows Server 2016 with wbemtest.exe. The user connected to the server is non-admin domain user but it has all the permissions according to Securing a Remote WMI Connection - Win32 apps : 1) It is a member of "Distributed COM Users" and "Event Log Readers" groups 2) It was granted "Remote Enable" for WMI root\cimv2 namespace. When I run the following Notification Query to Event logs: SELECT * FROM __InstanceCreationEvent WHERE TargetInstance ISA 'Win32_NTLogEvent' AND TargetInstance.Logfile = 'Security' AND (TargetInstance.EventIdentifier = 672 OR TargetInstance.EventIdentifier = 673 OR TargetInstance.Event…

PC Settings window opens and closes
by Guest IT134447864- 0 replies

If I am signed in as a local administrator, the PC settings window opens (also all app windows will open). If I sign in as a domain admin user with the server a domain controller, the PC settings window opens then closes (no app windows open). This is an older installer, so the version is Server 2016 Standard / 10.0.14393 N/A Build 14393. I would like to update but the windows update app doesn't open as well. I have multiple servers I recently installed experiencing this. This appears to have had a related issue with windows 10 awhile ago, so that is mostly all I can find "solutions' on. event logs Application: ID 5973 Activation of app windows.immers…

Has anyone run into an issue while using Active Directory-Based activation to activate Windows Server 2012 R2 from a Windows 2016 host? I recently added the Volume Activation role to a new domain controller that is running Windows 2016 Server Standard version. I have successfully added the KMS host keys for our products except for our Windows Server 2012 R2 license. When adding the KMS host key of the license in question, I receive the error "Invalid key or license mismatch. Please confirm this product key is entered correctly and valid for this application or Windows edition". Unfortunately, when looking at our Volume L…

MDT Issues - Importing Out-Of-Box drivers from share is extreamil slow~ 6-9 seconds per file
by Guest mmurphy58- 0 replies
Hi, When I open the MDT app, and attempt to import out of box drivers, it is painful. hours for what should take minutes. This is recent. I'm importing into the deployment share from the Sources share on the same server. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm not sure which logs to check. I know they are in different areas. Nothing popping out in the event viewer. Benchmarks: I copied 1611 items from the source directory to my desktop in about 6 mins ~ .23 secs per item I copied the same folder back to Deploy share in even less time : 4.5 mins ~ .17 secs per item, so I don't think this is any kind of external network problem or anything. Thanks …

Can I run a 2016 VM on a Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Hyper-V Host with S/A without licensing issues?
by Guest JBTS SC- 0 replies

We have a 3 node Hyper-V Failover Cluster with each node running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter. We have Software Assurance on all three hosts. From a technical perspective, we can certainly run a VM running Server 2016 Datacenter as a Guest OS on this cluster, but what about licensing? As I understand it, since we have Software Assurance, we therefore have New Version Rights and the ability to upgrade all Cluster hosts to 2016 Datacenter, we just haven't. So is the Software Assurance ability to upgrade to 2016 Datacenter on the hosts currently running 2012 R2 Datacenter enough to cover the 2016 Datacenter license on the VM? I do understand the core versus …

Server interrupted between Macos Mojave and Server 2016
by Guest Server interrupted Macos Mojave and FileServer2016- 0 replies

I have 2 Macs accessing SMB shares of a Server 2016 and have problems. On the two Macs is the graphics department. At the moment the problem exists for Excel. If the two want to overwrite an existing table on an SMB share, Excel hangs for a moment and the save fails. Only a temporary file is created and the table is not overwritten. I have experienced similar problems with Adobe software. When the file is first placed on the desktop, and then signed over with the finder, everything works fine. There is an "almost full access" to the drive or the share. Explained except for changing the permissions they have all rights. Does anyone here know a solution to this…

What is going on with Server 2016!. Lots of problem and no solutions. - slow windows updates... can take 4 to 6 hours to install and reboot. - now I'm having issue changing NTFS permissions. it's tuck at Setting security information on: I have reboot the server, ran SFC /scannow no error or problem reported. then i ran a few DISM command to check and repair health, no error or problem reported there as well. Rebooted again, still cannot apply permissions. I can see that it seems to be hanging on a file but even if I change that file location, it will show another one and so on. Applying permission on an empty folder will be the same result. Nothing show in the ev…

I have a Windows Server 2016 standard, stand alone server, that just installed windows updates and restarted during active hours. Why does this happen and how do I make sure this does not happen again? The server is setup as a stand alone server. In Settings, Updates, active hours are set from 7am to 7pm. At around 12:30pm, the server installed updates and restarted on it's own. Continue reading...

Group policy delpoying program through WiFi doesn't work
by Guest ole-van-de- 0 replies

I've created a group policy to deploy some little program (5 Mb) on the client machines. I did it the classic way through the Computer Configuration with evaluated rights. Everything work fine, unless users use Wi-Fi. I know the problem is in the authentication mechanism. As you can see I used all the popular ways, but nothing helped me. laptops that use wi fi don't want to install the program. May be I do something wrong? Is there any workaround? Can I to do the same with User Configuration using additional batch? Any ideas are welcome. Thanks I'd like to add. All the laptops are modern and connect to the wifi instantly. As only I logon the Domain control…

Server 2016 Start Menu stops working after becoming DC
by Guest TheViking28- 0 replies

I've replicated this now and need help understanding what is causing the issue. I stand up a new Server 2016 standard, I patch it, I join it to a domain, and then I install ADDS and promote it to a DC. As soon as I reboot the system after it has become a DC, then the start menu ceases to function at all. I can still right click and get that menu. I can not left click and get the normal start menu. Also the white paper "notifications" area to the right of the clock doesn't work either. I have scoured the internet to find an answer without success. I did find a few hits of similar issues but people were suggesting all kinds of powershell commands to r…

The problem is best described here (if there was a MS thread about this, I overlooked it): Windows Server 2016 scheduled task schedule must be in future In short, in some situations, "Repeat tasks every..." tasks would only run once per boot. KB4025334 claims to fix that: "Addressed issue where a task’s repeat trigger stopped working after reboot." Untested here, because as of this writing, the x64 version isn't available. Hi, So recently one of our technicians changed the password of a service accounts not knowing that this SA is used in one of the backups which stopped due to authentication issue. So we decided to create a service account for technicians to use in doing the following: 1. Create an AD login 2. Joining a computer in a domain So here are so far the steps I did: 1. right click on the domain and selected 'Delegate Control' > Add the user > select 'Create a custom task to delegate' > selected the 2nd radio button 'Only the following objects in this folder' and ticked on the checkbox below 'Create selected objects in this folder' under the long list selec…

W2K16 accessing W2K3 file share and via UNC?
by Guest romatlo32- 0 replies

Hi folks, I realize the SMBv1 has been deprecated and should not be used. However, I have a customer with an old W2K3 file share and needs to access it from W2K16 via UNC. We are currently unable to access it at all over the network, even after enabling SMBv1 on the W2K16 server. See below. PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-SmbServerConfiguration | Select EnableSMB1Protocol EnableSMB1Protocol ------------------ True Is there any way to get around this until this customer upgrades the old server or migrates? NOTE: It works fine when accessing from W2K8 (assuming because full support for SMBv1). Continue reading...
