May - October 2018 Cumulative Updates: SFC Integrity violation: NlsData0000.dll
by Guest Klaasklever- 0 replies
Installing the May 17 Cumulative Update for Server 2016 (OS Build 2273) leads to the "SFC /scannow" command attempting to repair the file "NlsData0000.dll" in the Windows - SysWOW64 directory. The repair is reported as "successful", but when running the command again, another repair is attemped. In other words: SFC /scannow never succeeds without integrity violations. Uninstalling the May 17 CU helps (reverting to April 10, 2018 Build 2189). No more integrity violations are shown after that. Reinstall the May 17 CU and voila, the error returns. Should be straightforward to reproduce (did so with two servers and a VM). Maybe the MS guys should have bother…

Cannot pin "Update & Security" to Start on Server 2016
by Guest The Victim- 0 replies

Open Settings, right click on "Updates & Security", select "Pin to Start", and it doesn't pin to Start. This has been the case with all the Server 2016 servers I support and I keep waiting for an update to fix it but I am tired of waiting so I am hoping someone here has resolved this problem. Note that I only install server updates the last week of the month to allow time for others to report problems and time for Microsoft to withdraw problematic updates, which has happened more this year than I have ever seen in the past. Therefore, I haven't installed this month's updates yet and I am not very optimistic they will resolve this problem. Does this work for …

LTSC and SCCM
by Guest Rick-AZ- 0 replies

I have an environment that is mostly Server 2012 R2, I still have a few 2008 R2 servers in play, and I'm looking at bringing up AD CS and Always On VPN. My thought is that I should bring up my new servers (Hyper-V VMs running on 2012 R2 clustered hosts) as 2016 servers for this. From what I see, probably the best path for me is 1607 LTSC. However, my SCCM version is 1806 on 2012 R2 and is servicing machines that are Windows 10, some Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) and some just Semi-Annual Channel, none are Long Term Servicing Channel, and an AD Functional Level of 2008 R2. Will this all work together or am I setting myself up for problems? Continue reading...

Server 2016: Windows Defender cannot be uninstalled, fixed, started or replaced?
by Guest DigitalDynamic- 0 replies
Good afternoon, I am working on a server 2016 installation. For whatever reason my windows defender service has stopped operating. Trying to remove, reinstall, or fix via DISM/SFC seems to have failed and I'm near my wit's end. So, here's what I know. Windows update cannot update the definitions, fails with a 0x80070643 error Removal via powershell command Uninstall-WindowsFeature -Name Windows-Defender fails with a 0x800f0831 error at 57% Removal via "remove roles and features" fails similarly, as does command line. Renaming the Windows Defender folder and creating a new one with a transplanted set of files from a working 2016 installation did not work…

How to update the "Last checked" value on Windows Server 2016

None of the command or script approaches for controlling the Windows Update on Server 2016 is updating the date and time of Last checked shown in the GUI. The only time it’s updated is when I press [Check for updates] in the GUI. The value can also be read using this Powershell commands: $windowsUpdateObject = New-Object -ComObject Microsoft.Update.AutoUpdate $windowsUpdateObject.Results.LastSearchSuccessDate I have tried several things, but none is working – see below Does anyone know how to get the update to set the date and time? OR where the value for LastSearchSuccessDate is stored on a Server 2016, as it has changed from Server 2012R2 I have tried Pow…

Windows 2016 unattended installation throwing error "The selected disk space is not of type ESP" in UEFI mode

Hi all, I'm trying to install Windows 2016/Win 10 on a server using boot.wim and Unattended file. I have formatted the harddisk into two partitions, EFI partition with FAT32 and user partition with NTFS I'm keeping the uefi files and boot.wim in the EFI partition and booting into it. By editing the startnet.cmd inside boot.wim, I had added code to copy the contents of user partition to x:\temp and then restore back once i format the partition to ntfs again from winpe environment. Finally i will be calling setup.exe present on the OS iso, with the unattended file present on user partition as argument. My unattended file is having Install partitio…

Certificate Authority
by Guest Tunamelt- 0 replies

I just migrated from a Server 2012 Environment to Server 2016 Environment. The 2012 Server had ADCS (Certification Authority) and only had Certificates listed for our Domain Controllers. I am removing the 2012 Server completely and am looking to clean things up a bit. Is there a problem with revoking the issued Certificates and then removing the ADCS role? I'm thinking of following this guide (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/889250/how-to-decommission-a-windows-enterprise-certification-authority-and-r) but I want to make sure I won't screw anything else up in the domain. We do not have clients remoting into our network (which I understand, is one of the mai…

Hello, guys. SMB1Protocol feature has been removed from Windows Server 2016 (virtual machine) using the command: Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName SMB1Protocol -Remove For some reason I want to restore this feature. I need to set NLB as Multicast then I can remote in. Can anyone advise what should the NLB settings be configured for DirectAccess? Regards, Chiew Sheng Continue reading...

by Guest jhalden- 0 replies

Hello everyone, Recently, a server was deployed at one of my clients's sites. The new server is running Windows Server 2016 and was built to be the Domain Controller and run DHCP as well. Originally, the client was using a Windows Server 2008 R2 server to be running these services, and everything was migrated over and upgraded (although, this was before I joined the company so I was not involved in any of the setup, migration, upgrade). The client has tried to install Windows Backup Feature on the new server, but was receiving the following error: The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed. Installation of one or ore roles, role se…

Hello. I've in-place updated my home lab from server 2016 to Server 2019 and faced with network issues: 1. RDP to the updated server is terrible and lagged. it looks like I'm connected through satellite connection. picture is falling apart. 2. Plex (steaming server) is now useless because client shows 2-3 sec of movie and falling into buffering for 5-10 sec. 3. SMB file copy to server is about 200-800 KB\sec and vice versa. There is onboard 1Gbe Realtek NIC in the home server. I've tried to update drivers, but there are no new drivers are available. after two days of raving about useless Plex I've tried to uninstall Hyper-V role and BINGO - server …

This is a new phenomenon, from what I can tell (though this is not certain) only beginning sometime after 14393.2515 was applied one week ago. We have had the Alternative UPN Suffix set in Active Directory Domains and Trusts for about 18 months. It's still there. That's not the problem. The problem is that a subset of users in ADUC, ones for which we definitely had that Suffix selected on the Account tab, are reverting to the default domain.local Suffix. If we change it again, it lasts only for X amount of time, ranging from a few minutes to around a half hour. This is repeatable for affected accounts. Perhaps just about 10% of the accounts are seeing this issue-…
