  1. You were completely right. I had installed Philips Media Manager which is indeed reported to set Vista back from Aero to Vista Basic. After de-installing Aero now stays. Thanks for your help. Elw

I am suffering similar problems: Acer Travelmate 6292 was doing fine (Aero turned on and working) when one day I suddenly noticed that the transparency and the 3d flip had gone (not too bad but annoying). When the system is restarted, Aero is working but at the end of the startup sequence the screen blinks and aero is gone. Following the steps from the Vista help to turn Aero on do not work. This might have happened after I had connected some external monitors and extended my desktop on them. I find that if I manually restart the Destop Window Manager Session Manager service, aero is turned back on. The effect is lost after a reboot however. (search continues).
