Incompatibility

I

infidel

I've asked guy at my computer shop to build me a box with dual boot, 98SE
and XP.
My 98 SE legal, I don't want Vista, and I can still purchase an OEM XP
He says some newer mother boards won't accept 98SE.
Is this true?
I've got 'bootitng' at the moment unused and unpaid for.
Thanks
I.

Stores in different countries may have different
ranges of goods. If you are asking a store operator
to build you a PC you have the right to write your
own specifications. If the builder knows of no
MB that meats your needs, he ought (1) to tell
you, (2) to recommend hardware that approximates
your specs most closely.

Some have 98 chipset drivers, some do not. Do a google search and find one
that is 98 compatible and meets your other needs.

This issue boils down to the chipset support of win-98.

I can tell you that the last Intel chipset to have relatively complete
win-98 driver support was the 875 (there's conflicting info about the
910/915). This will limit you to an Intel P-4 CPU - socket 478 type.
Motherboards based on that chipset and CPU were common oh, say 2003.
These boards will have AGP and not PCI-e for video (that is
important).

Anything with a socket for a P4 Intel 775 or Core/Core-2 will almost
never have AGP slots for video (they will have PCI-e) and you
basically will not get win-98 running with a PCI-e video card. There
is one exception:

Asrock Dual-VSTA:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=4COREDUAL-VSTA

This motherboard is recommended for dual-boot or dedicated win-98 use
because:

- The VIA PT880 Ultra chipset has relatively complete win-98
driver support (go to via website for drivers)

- It has both AGP-8x and PCI-e expansion slots for video cards
(so install your favorite AGP video card on it)

- it has memory slots for both DDR and DDR-2

This board was clearly designed for those who want to take their
expensive AGP video card and DDR memory and migrate those components
to socket-775 or Core-based motherboard.

I have installed win-98 on this motherboard (on a 500 gb SATA hard
drive) and the issues I've seen are:

- it does not shut down properly

- no win-98 support for the HD-audio ALC-888 audio codec

So basically if you want audio you need to install a separate PCI
sound card.

I am not trying to hijack this post but you may start a new post on this 98
Guy but I wanted to get your opinion on the best hardware available for 98SE.
I actually need an older Sound Blaster Audigy cd that includes DOS drivers
since the new one that Creative sent me no longer includes DOS drivers and I
have misplaced my original Sound Blaster Audigy CD that worked so great and
had DOS drivers with Sound Blaster 16 emulation. Creative now uses something
called MPU-401 for their driver instead and it is terrible in my opinion
instead of the older DOS drivers. Thanks for your help and start a new
thread for me if needed since I don't want to take away from the main poster
who may return eventually. <grin>

DOS Audigy drivers (was: Re: Incompatibility)

Have a look here:

http://www.mameworld.net/dosmame/setup.php

Note this:

-------------
Goto to out downloads page HERE to get the dos drivers for these cards

The SBLive.zip archive contains the DOS sound card drivers for :
Ensoniq Audio PCI
Sound Blaster Live!
Sound Blaster Audigy PCI
--------------

SBLive.zip can be downloaded here:

http://www.mameworld.net/dosmame/exe/sblive.zip

Does that help?

I have a few Sound-Blaster-Live-Value and Audigy-2 boards and original
CD's - do you need anything from them?

RE: DOS Audigy drivers (was: Re: Incompatibility)

Thank you so much 98 Guy. The 2nd link should work for what I need to
accomplish. I will try it out and get back to you over the next day or two
and let you know if it worked well. What, I really could use is an original
Sound Blaster Audigy Cd that has the Sound Blaster 16 Emulation drivers. (the
Dos ones) Hopefully, someone has that at the newsgroup and I could pay them
for the cd. I have been unable to find one offered on Ebay.
