HELP!! ERROR STARTING UP

J

JHB

All of a sudden our win98 [Pll] machine gives the following error message
when starting up: "A FATAL EXCEPTION 0B HAS ACCURED AT 05AF:0000138B. THE
CURRENT APPLICATION WILL BE TERMINATED."
the system then starts in Safe Mode.
I'm not sure what is going on, or what I need to do to fix this. We rarely
use this machine, and when we do, it's only used to browse the internet, and
we do not, I repeat do not download anything on it, as we try and be v.
careful, since it's an older OS.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
JHB

Assuming you added no software and changed no hardware
neither do we. We need to know what apps were
loaded when this occurred, and whether you are sure
you are malware-free. It may help to know when you
last updated video drivers or Win98 on this PC (e.g.
did you instal the Security Update disk of 2004?)

Jeff, thanks for the advise, but does the identified error code means
anything?
Thanks,
JHB

The error information is a memory address at which the problem was
identified. Even if it can be traced to some actual code, the cause of the
error is almost certainly somewhere else. There are some errors that are
common and can be traced to the cause using the code, but this doesn't
appear to be one of them.

While i am here...

You can actually google for 'bsod' error msgs,, like the one you recieved. It is hexidecimal
jibberish, but it does mean lots when googled for give it a try,, I know it has worked for me.
Try typing into google like this ' Big Hex number + Error '. (naturally, substitute 'big hex number'
with the one you have.) You can even put another ' + ' and type 'Win98' etc.
