Random Overlay Icons

I've just installed 98SE on a machine and installed all the available updates.
Now I've got the hand icon which is overlaid on to shared folders in Explorer
etc. being replaced by a random choice of any icon. I remember from many moons
ago that this was a by-product of one of the updates but can't remember which :(
Is there a solution to this? Or failing that can anyone tell which update causes
it.
Google turns up umpteen methods of removing the short-cut arrow all of which
come down to installing TweakUI but nothing about this.

First off, right click on the icon and see if you get the option to "change
icon"

If not, have a look in "properties" and see if you get the option there.

If so, you should hopefully be able to change it back to the correct one.

Also, TweakUI does have an option to "rebuild icons"

I have used that feature and it worked for me.

Delete the shelliconcache file from Safe Mode, per the instructions here:

Icons Displayed Incorrectly in Control Panel:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=133733

OR,
Click Start>Settings> Control Panel> Display> Appearance tab:
Click the "Item:" drop-down list and select "Icon"
Note the current icon size in the "Size:" box next to that.
Change the size, click Apply.
Change the size back to what it was, click OK.
And,
Find the file named shelliconcache (it has no file extension), in the Windows
folder, and delete it or rename it to shelliconcache.bak, then re-boot.

OR,
If you have TweakUI installed, click Start> Settings> Control Panel> TweakUI>
"Repair" tab, select "Rebuild Icons" and click Repair Now.

Download and install TweakUI1.33:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/winme/Install/1.0/WinMe/EN-US/Tweakui.exe

Following that, set the Max Icon Cache setting in the Registry to 2048:
http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm
Scroll to 'IconCache Fix', download, unzip, then right-click the enclosed .reg file,
click Merge on the menu that appears, and OK to the confirmation message.

Thanks to all for a superfast response!!!
I'd already tried steps 1 and 3 with nil results. It took steps 2 & 3 together
to get my sharing overlay icon (the little hand palm upwards with the blue cuff)
back. Strangely it was the only icon affected even the shortcut arrow overlay
was OK.
