BACKUP for Windows 98

D

DiDi

I have a Dell desktop,XPST-450 that I don't use. It filled up, and I bought
a new Vista and I use that.. I want to backup all of the data from Windows
98 on the old machine to a 1 tb external hd with a usb port. I think this
can be done with an IMAGE for Windows by Terabyte. Then I can
delete/uninstall the original data from the Windows 98 machine and take it
to my place in Florida and use it there for the Winter, and leave it there,
instead of transporting my new Vista Machine back and forth.

The problem is that if I want to restore any part of the Image backup to the
98se machine, I don't believe it can be done with the Windows Image
according to the directions. It says to make a Windows DOS disc and restore
from that. (I know nothing about dos unless given specific instructions). Or
it says I can make a Bart PE disc. I had a Bart PE disc that I tried to use
for my Vista. It didn't work so I threw it out. I suspect that disc would
have worked for win98se. I do have an Image for DOS disc that I had made.

Anyway my question is how do I backup all of my Windows 98se machine and
data to my 1TB external drive? And how do I restore parts of it or all of
it if I want to in the future?
I have not set up the Win98se yet as the heavy monitor is across the room
and I can not lift it.

No, do not use an "image"

Simply copy the data you need directly to the external drive
and transfer it that way

What program should I use. I made the external drive with an internal drive
and a case that did not come with a program. I don't believe Win98se has a
backup program the way that Vista does, does it? Can I use boot it by
terabyte? I have had trouble in the past because I am not sure how to back
up. I have wound up with complete copies on my internal hard drive and a
couple of empty folders on my external hard drive. I was going to get
Acronis but when I read the directions they were much too complicated for
me. What do you suggest? (I do not have a RW drive on my 98se machine.)

I use and recommend the free utility from www.xxcopy.com.
This enables copying Windows system files (that Windows
protection forbids) and has literally dozens of specialized
parameters to customize a backup process, all documented
at this site.

So the machine goes to Florida, but Win98 doesn't?

I am unfamiliar with that specific program.

Usually, such a disc would be bootable and have a copy of the
image restoration program on it. You boot from that disk and
it may automattically execute some sort of image restoration
wizard.

Read the documentation for the imaging software you use. There
may even be a newsgroup dedicated to imaging software.

I believe some imaging software allows you to 'mount' the
image as a drive and browse it just like any other directory
without even actually 'restoring' it.

Heck, you do not need any special software
just copy the folders over to the external drive using Windows explorer
