windows me dos

[Pat]

Hi

Trying to fix a friend of mine's computer that is running windows me. I
moved the user dat file to a folder I named Pat's and I cant seem to move it
back using dos cant do much at all in windows without it. Can anybody tell
me how to move it back, its a hidden file, before she finds out what I did
to her computer.

Running SCANREG /RESTORE from a DOS prompt after booting to DOS with a
floppy might help if one of the five backed up copies of the registry
offered for restoration predates the problem. If more than one, choose
the most recent prior to the problem.

boot to DOS
cd \path_to_normal_location_of_user.dat\
attrib -s -r -h user.dat
copy user.dat user.old
cd \path_to_Pat's_folder
attrib -s -r -h user.dat
copy user.dat \path_to_normal_location_of_user.dat\

Not sure if this is gonna help you repairing Windows though.

Going by the subject I had thought the OP was posting a list of Windows
ME dos. Expected a subsequent post of Win ME don'ts.

Thanks for all the info guys but I still cant get it to work. About the only
dos commands I can get to work are the dir command with the ah to find the
file I can see it but I cant move it. Cant get the attrib comand to work I
was going to copy it to the Windows folder where it was to begin with but no
luck so far. Wish I could get to DOS shell its a little easier to
manupulate. Ive been playing with it most of the day maybe Ill try again
tomorrow.
Posted this last nite but I posted it as an answer to the question I asked.
Cant find it anywhere. Are the microsoft ng's in fact in a fritz ?

What EXACT error did you see when you ran SCANREG /RESTORE for the DOS
prompt? Do this and you will have no need to use ATTRIB or COPY as
scanreg will do everything for you.

No, working fine and you posted your message as a reply to Bart's post and
not to your own however that could have been an earlier message if you
posted it twice. The problem could be if you are using the Communities
feature in Windows Mail, something that rarely works as intended and often
seems to cause messages to go missing.

times once with a space between the prompt once without once in caps onee
in lower case once with a back slash once with a forward slash once with a
space between scanreg and the forward slash it keeps telling me Bad comand
or filename.

Usually Bad command or filename signifies that either the
command file (in this case SCANREG) does not exists or
it is not in the path. SCANREG resides in the directory:
C:\Wimdows\command and this directory must be in your
path before you can use. You can check if it is in your
path by entering just one word PATH (upper or lower case),
and the current set path will be shown. If you find that
it is not in the path you can set it to path by entering
Path = C:\Windows\Command
Once C:\Windows\Command is in the path, you should be able
to run SCANREG.

I.E. - Use your WinMe Startup (floppy) disk and at the A:> prompt, type the
scanreg /restore command.

Well here is what happens after running scanreg /restore. It gives me 5
choices on which one to restore, I tried them all. It will say it found
errors and was restoring the registry and then restart the computer. When
the computer restarts a dialog box comes up asking for a password for
Microsoft networking, I got the password of Red, the computer owner, and it
works, then another dialog box opens and asks for a password to log onto
windows Red says she never had a password to log onto windows I tried the
networking password and its the wrong password. If I hit cancel on the
networking dialog box the second box doesnt show up. Windows starts with the
normal desktop icons and start button and several running programs. Then yet
another dialog box opens and says Windows encountered an error accessing the
registry Windows will repair the registry and restart the computer. It seems
this will recycle infinitly, I let it restart about 4 times.
If I CTRL ALT DEL and end task on the scanreg and allow windows to start
I can open my computer and I get the following warning Current Security
Settings prohibit running active X controls on this page, Page may not
display correctly. Says the same thing on the networking tab. Recycle bin
wont work. Start Button wont work. Internet Explorer wont work. Running
Programs lower right corner of screen Quick time will work as does the
volume control.
I also noticed the disc is partitioned with a restore program on it
anybody know the command string to launch it. The computer is a Compaq
Presario running a Duron 750 Mhz processor with about 320 megs of ram.

It doesn't sound like you're solving the problem with Registry Restore in
DOS. When starting Windows ME it checks for Registry problems and if
detected, automatically goes back to the previous version. Try to retrace all
your steps when "saving" the .DAT file and maybe you'll come up with
something.

I'm sorry but it appears that in addition to moving the registry file
user.dat that you moved/deleted/trashed some other essential system files.
Time to restore the system from the restore folder but first make sure to
safe what you can including e-mail, photos, etc.

If no-one here knows the answer.I'd check the HP/Compaq web site after
that try Google. Never having had a Compaq or any other commercially
built PC since the mid 90s I can't help you here. Sorry

Im very carful about what I delete when she gave me the computer she did say
that she thought someone may have deleted some of the wrong files. I also
sas a warning about some missing dos files when I was running somthing I
think it was spybot or Avast anti virus.
