problems with re-set calendar, (pleh ! ! !)

K

kraine

Just bought this clunker laptop so my mom can run her nutrition program on
it. THe program links to the calendar, and keeps track of what you eat every
day.

Unfortunately, the calendar for the system is messed up, and I don't have
any discs or anything to fix it. I reset the date, then the next time I turn
on the computer, it's a different time, and day.

My guess is I have to download something (the clunker only has CD
capability, no internet, no usb).

Can anyone help me? I'd like to get this mailed out to my mom soon.

Many many thanks, Kathy

Its probably ready for a new (replacement) CMOS battery, which - amongst
other things - maintains the clock settings when the computer is turned off
from the mains power.

See the following 'How to' for a typical description/tutorial.

It looks like the laptop has a dead cmos battery.

On a desktop, it's very easy to change...
but a laptop is more difficult and you may have to take it into a shop

As a no cost workaround you could edit the autoexec.bat file

and simply add two lines:

date

time

when the machine boots up, the user will have to manually enter the date and
time

me again, forgot to include my error message

thank you, guys for the help, I really appreciate it. I'll look into the
battery thing.

I should have also included the message I get every time I turn it on.
"Calendar can't find one or more of the files it needs to run. Run the
calendar set up program again toi install the missing files. If the calendar
still doesn't open, run the internet explorer set up program to install the
missing files."

I'm leaving the laptop on for 24 hrs if I can to see if it will charge up
the little battery. Would I get a message like that if the CSMO were going
dead?

thanks again, Kathy

This points to defective or damaged installation of win98.

The CMOS battery is not rechargeable. It is a disc-type battery
about the size of a nickel. Now that Lithium CMOS batteries (type
CR2032) are on the market ($5) the earlier CMOS batteries
($3) may last less than a year instead of 5 years as formerly.

calendar, defective/damaged Win98

If I have a defective or damaged WIn98, and I just want to fix the calendar,
can I download something onto a cd and use it to fix the calendar?

many thanks, Kathy

UHM, depending upon the make of the laptop it MAY have a rechargeable CMOS
battery. Though if it is as old and as DEAD as it might be [having gone
through repeated deep discharge], it may be no good.

Isn't a calendar associated with MS OutLook, or other third party program?

Well
I'd do what it says and try reinstalling your program.

For best results you may wan to first uninstall it and reboot.

Also, it the machine has an older version of Internet Explorer
you should probably upgrade it to IE6

Make sure the laptop and Windows 98 meet the requirements of this program.

Windows 98 has its own time and date applet, so the calendar program
to which you refer may be a legacy or third-party application.

As mentioned by others, this is probably a CMOS battery issue.

how to re-install?

'THank you all again! I think I"m getting an idea of my problem, just need a
little more assistance.

1) The calendar I mean is the computer's "internal" time-keeping. At the
bottom of my monitor is the time and date. I have to keep re-setting it
(every day it is incorrect, even after Ive re-set the day before). (It's
aToshiba Satellite Pro, 430 CDT.)

2) I need the day/time keeping to work properly, I bought this thing for my
mom to run a daily n utritional program.

3) I do get that message when I boot up "Calendar can't find one or more of
the files it needs to run. Run the calendar set up program again to install
the missing files..." as someone here suggested, I think I will try to
reinstall the program. Would that be Win 98?

4) I don't know what to download and how to just get the thing to tell the
right time and date. THis is the part I need the most help with. I'm not
sure what to download and how to fix the time/day. Or maybe I should just
reinstall the whole thing?

Many thanks, Kathy

Re: how to re-install?

Kathy, worry about your "Calendar" program issues later (missing files etc.)
first you need to concentrate on your Windows "Clock" (bottom of the
monitor - time and date)

This clock is maintained by the CMOS battery (mentioned earlier) and you may
have to consult the User Manual to ascertain its location and exact
replacement type and details of how to replace it.

A web search, e.g. "Toshiba Satellite Pro, 430 CDT CMOS Battery" will find
plenty of hits for a replacement battery. The first I found (and not cheap)
was the CMOS (or RAM) battery at :-
http://www.duracelldirect.com/toshiba_satellite-pro-430cdt_cmos-batteries_laptop_b-426.aspx
but doesn't describe how to replace it.

You may have to look further - unless someone can come back with the
definitive method.

First 'fix' the clock and then worry about your Calendar program.

Good luck

Mart

We cannot tell from this single symptom (wroong date)
whether the cause is:
1. Virus or malware (software)
2. Defective Win98 system software
3. Dead CMOS battery (hardware).

Lacking a second symptom, you must attend to all or
any until the first symptom vanishes. Reformatting
and reinstalling ought to dispose of both #1 and #2
but we do not know whether you have the brand-name
system CD with (brand-specific) laptop drivers.

As mentioned before, the laptop uses an internal battery, separate from
the main battery to sustain the clock when the computer is turned off.

The program you are trying to use may be designed for different version of
Windows. Older versions of Windows used a "calendar.exe" file, but this
was eliminated with Windows 95.

I strongly suggest you check the requirements for the program you are trying
to run. The Windows 3.1 version of calender.exe seems to run fine on my
Windows 98 system, but it might be difficult to find a copy and the program
you are trying to run might even require a different version of Windows.

If it shows the date as well as the time, you're probably running some
third-party software the default is just the time, with the date
appearing as a popup/tooltip if you hover over it. I say probably as I'm
not _sure_ you can't change a setting somewhere to make Windows itself
show the date as well. (I use TClockEx for this, set to
>ddd, yyyy MMM d#|>H:m:s|zz ZZ

[yes the ">" is part of it].)

What actually keeps it going is in effect a cheap digital watch built
into the computer, with a (usually non-rechargeable but about 5 years'
life nominally, and IME they usually last a lot longer than that) cell
to power it. (Nearly always a CR2032 big coin cell on desktop machines
I've no idea on laptops.)

What _displays_ that time is software: it reads the time from the
built-in "real time clock" (RTC) at bootup, and thenceforward maintains
the time in software until you shut down - it also writes back to the
RTC if you adjust the settings. This software is either the
functionality built into Windows (which works fine) or a third-party
add-on like TClockEx.

It seems fairly likely that your RTC is failing - probably just the
cell.
>
>2) I need the day/time keeping to work properly, I bought this thing for my

Short of fixing the cell, I think your only option is to leave the
computer on all the time - though I'm not even sure that will work if it
goes into standby.

I don't _think_ so - the phrase "calendar set up program" sounds to me
like you're running some third-party application. See if there's
anything in Start | Programs | Startup, or a "Properties" option if you
right-click in the clock area (or maybe left-click) which gives you a
web address unfortunately, googling for calendar will find too many
hits. If this fails, seeing what's running - with WinTop, Process
Explorer, or at a pinch just Ctrl-Alt-Del - might lead you to the
executable that's involved with "calendar" if you find that executable
(probably in \Windows, or \Program Files, or one of their
subdirectories) and right-click on it, its Properties tab might give you
the name of the company which wrote it and thus lead you to a website.

As I and others have said, there are two different things involved: the
underlying hardware that keeps the clock (and calendar) going when the
PC is off, which we hope just needs a new cell and, whatever software
is producing that error message. Unless that is actually part of the
nutritional software itself, it's probably easiest just to remove the
offending software if you find it - the clock and calendar function are
part of Windows anyway, accessible to any software. This won't fix the
clock cell though. (_If_ it _does_ actually use a rechargeable, you
_may_ be able to bring it back to life by just leaving it on [with any
powerdown feature disabled] for from three days to a week, but I
wouldn't hold my breath rechargeable cells aren't usually rescuable
IME.)

P. S. - as well as keeping the main clock going, on most machines (not
some of the latest, I think) the cell also maintains certain BIOS
settings, like the parameters of the hard drive (_may_ autoconfigure
OK), clock and memory refresh settings (usually default to something
that works, but not at optimum, e. g. might make the PC run slower). In
general, and once you've proved it does need replacing (voltmeter will
usually suffice - they can get very low and still work!), it's probably
wise to do so sooner than later.
