Desktop icons missing

E

Emrys Davies

I have Win98 SE, IE6 and OE6.

My desktop icons, except Network Neighborhood, Internet Explorer, and
Recycle Bin, have suddenly gone missing from my desktop and SCANREG
/RESTORE does not restore them. Any ideas please.

Regards,
Emrys Davies.

(1) How many Users do you see under the START button?

The Desktop is individualized on a per User basis. Can it be
you have logged to a different User or to the Default User?
I only have & use the Default User.

(2) How many folders named "Desktop" do you have?
("START button, Find, F/F, Desktop", but select "Folder"
at the Advanced tab.)
I've got just two...
C:\WINDOWS\Desktop
C:\WINDOWS\All Users\Desktop

If you've got more than two, you likely have multiple users & have
logged onto a different one. Maybe try...

"Control Panel, Passwords, User Profiles tab", & bolt "All users of this
computer use the same preferences & desktop settings". But I think I'd
rather get rid of the extraneous user profile altogether!

Click "Start", "Find", "Files or folders", type "*.LNK" into the "Named" box,
type "C:\" into the "Look in" box and click "Find Now". If you find the old
shortcuts, you can either move them to the current desktop or modify the
registry to reflect the location of the shortcuts. You may have to restart the
computer for the registry change to take effect.

Thanks a lot Ben. I found quite a few of the missing Links (Icons)
using "*.LNK" and sent them back to the desktop where they opened
effectively. I have replaced others as the need arises. Other more
important sites are in Quick Launch and thankfully they were not
disturbed. I am happy now. Thanks again and to everyone else who tried
to help.

ISTR a setting (it might have been in some tweaking prog., like TweakUI)
to turn off desktop icons (the above three are "special"). I could be
wrong though.

No. Were they insuring Desktop icons too?

Who knows for sure? Maybe, after the government unravels those evil AIG
swap options-- Davies may discover his icons were insured after all!
Good to see you back in here, Buffalo, to bring that possibility up!
