What MS jpeg viewers are there for win-98?

9

98 Guy

Outlook 2000 (running on Win-98) opens jpegs attached to e-mails with MS
Paint (at least it does for me). This is also the default viewer when
jpegs are opened from explorer.

MS Paint does not have the capability to reduce the view to less than
100% or otherwise to "fit to window".

What other bitmap viewing programs came with Win-9x or Office 2K Premium
that I can easily set as the default viewer that allows more flexible
scaling?

Bonus question:

Can Outlook be configured to display bitmaps (like jpeg's) in-line? I
think Outlook Express does this - can Outlook do it too?

I recommend the free viewer IRFanView

just a small download...

you can set it to be your default viewer for most any "image" formate

I have a clean install of 98 here that uses IE as the defaul for JPEG JPG

Folder options are:

Action:
open

Application used...:
"C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" -nohome

Use DDE

DDE Message:
"file:%1",,-1,,,,,

I don't know Outlook, but IINM you have to be "viewing in HTML" in OE.
The shortcut key in later versions is Alt-Shift-H, if you're configured to read
all messages in plain text.

Outlook, depending on version, installed security fixes to preclude some
activities in email. Changing the settings [not recommended, particularly in
older versions] can allow this activity. Outlook, more deeply embedded than
OE, needs careful configuration.

A program I used to like was GIMP, along with IRFanView and a few others.
Paint was just to limited to do anything of real value.
GIMP also had numerous add-ons/plugins and I thought it was better than
PhotoShop [older version compared sidebyside]...

OTOH, I would guess that both OE and O use the same engine (mshtml.dll)
to display html content. As far as security, so goes IE, so goes OE and O.

I always configure to read in "plain text", and really don't miss the fluff of
html. There aren't too many emails/posts that are that creative anyway -)

Ok, some of my office PC's were using something other than Paint to open
jpegs.

They were using:

----------------
Microsoft Photo Editor 3.01
Copyright 1989-1998 Milkrosoft Corporation

Based upon HALO Desktop Imager
Copyright 1991-1998 Media Cybernetics LP

File name: photoed.exe
File date: July 10, 2001
File version: 20010710
File size: 760 kb

c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\PhotoEd\PhotoEd.exe
------------------

It's probably part of the full install of Office 2K premium.

The one I have is newer than this one:

http://www.megaiq.com/downloads/microphotoed.exe

But both claim to be the same version (3.01)

You can also get it here:

http://wareseeker.com/Graphic-Apps/microsoft-photo-editor-3.01.zip/440126

--------------
Microsoft Photo Editor ships with Microsoft Office 97 and the
stand-alone versions of Microsoft Word 97 and Microsoft PowerPoint 97.
Microsoft Photo Editor is installed when you perform a custom or
complete installation from the compact disc. It does not ship with the
stand-alone versions of Microsoft Excel 97, Microsoft Access 97, or as
part of the Microsoft Office 97 ValuPack.

Microsoft has replaced Photo Editor with Microsoft Office Picture
Manager, a new photo editing and cataloging program in Office 2007 and
in Office 2003.

To work around this issue in Office 2007 and in Office 2003, reinstall
Photo Editor.

Photo Editor (like most image editing programs) is too big an application to
fire up each time you need to view a JPG. The Open default for JPG files
should be Irfanview - it starts quickly and consumes few resources. The
image editor can be set as the Edit option.

It's only 760 kb.

I've just downloaded (but haven't run) Irfanview:

iview420_setup.exe

It must be a self-extracting archive (I can't un-zip or un-rar it).
It's 1.27 mb in size. What is the file-size of the unpacked Irfanview
executable?

The executable alone for ver. 4.10 is 450 KB, don't know about ver. 4.20 but
will soon find out.
The program folder files w/o plugins is approx 1 MB, w/plugins is approx 9.30
MB.

Yeah the exe is a for me unknown compressed archive... (or
have irfanview made the installer themself?)

but there is also a zip download.
at the bottom of page "Download" there is a link
"-> Other download sites (Mirrors)" and at the bottom of that page
there is the link to http://irfanview.tuwien.ac.at/iview420.zip
(Version 4.20, ZIP file, 1.15 MB)

It's not just the executable size - it's the additional work that something
like Photo Editor does to set the image up for editing, configure for user
preferences, install editing tools etc. If your most frequent task when you
double-click an image is to make some changes and then save it, then an
editor is suitable as a default. But if you usually just look at it and
move on then you need a viewer not an editor.

I don't know what your problem is, but Photo Editor launches pretty
quickly and within 1 second of double-clicking on a jpeg (either from
explorer or from outlook attachment) I'm viewing the image.

With Photo Editor I can re-sample the image, crop it, save it to another
format, plus a bunch of other stuff that I agree not many people would
do. Maybe Irfanview can do all that stuff too (resample, crop, save to
another format). But as far as speed is concerned, Photo Editor seems
fast enough.

Maybe you're confusing Photo Editor with something like Photo Shop or
Corel Draw's Photo-paint (which takes the better part of 15 seconds to
load).

Free = irfanview or XnView

Non-Free = acdsee v 2.43, the last fast, unbuggy version.

MS Photo Editor will take over default image viewing if it's installed
correctly. Version 3.0.2.3 is the only version that has the image
rotator fixed to where it actually works without locking up. IIRC it
comes with OfficeXP and in general Photo Editor was always offered
with Office prior to Picture Manager. Bootleg 3.01 packages don't
install correctly as they are missing graphics filters and registry
entries for those filters which are needed.

It's just as fast as IE for viewing images, at least as far as I can
tell.
