Password protect files that can be edited

As a security measure, I placed all of my financial files in a zipped
compressed folder and protected the folder with a password. Now I find the
files have been changed to Read-Only and, as such, they cannot be brought up
to date, or edited. I have not been able to change the file properties, and
do not know of any procedure to follow to edit a file other than remove the
password protection, edit a file, and then go through the procedure of
compressing and password protecting the file again. Does anyone have a more
realistic solution to protecting the privacy of sensitive files while
maintaining an easy method of editing?

Are you using Excel? Isn't there a way to put a password on each
Excel document? Then you wouldn't have to put them in a zip folder.

You could also look at Truecrypt (.org) this will allow you to mount an
encrypted archive as a driveletter, which is much more convenient in that you
only need supply a password once for each work-session. Plus, it's
military-standard security.

Just don't lose the password, if you do the data is gone.
