Lost mouse

Reggie D.

I have lost my mouse.
It will not appear in plug & play nor is it listed when trying via
'install new hardware.'
It is a serial mouse but when I try to select via 'standard mouse types' &
move into the RH coulumn to select 'standard serial mouse' the keyboard down
ket will noy move down!!

Can anyone solve this problem by advising how I can restore my mouse using
the keyboard only? HELP.....

First check your connections,
try a different serial mouse

Also make sure the com port(s) is/are enabled in the bios.

so it is a standard 2-button serial mouse connected to COM1 or COM2 ...
(how/what happened when you lost it btw? one morning when you started
the computer windows didn't find it anymore and it didn't help to
remove it and put it back there at that there-is-no-mouse dialogbox?)

anyway, when you keyboardnavigate the 'add new hardware' guide:
first next (Enter) two times,
then Alt-N as in "No it isn't in the list" and Enter,
then Alt-N as in "No I want to .... from the list" and Enter,
then arrow down to "Mouse" and Enter,
then with "(standard mouse types)" selected press [Tab]
to go to the right column "Models"
then press [Arrow down] four times to "Standard mouse (Serial)"
and then Enter to continue

....where doesn't it work?

the arrow key did work when you was going down to mouse hardware type,
right?
(and it is a normal PS/2 keyboard I hope)

Yes it's a std PS/2 keyboard.
I'm on W98SE and the problem occured when trying to install a USB printer.
Again I can only keyboard any corrections. Hope you have further suggestions
as I'm lost.

If within the last five days, you *might* be able to fix it with scanreg
/restore. It's an old trick, but it might just work!

BTW - was your attempt at installing the USB printer successful?

A new Epson allinone is going to be difficult to use with W98.

Did your attempts at installing it involve making any changes to BIOS setup?

I think the allinone is incompatible as u say. but I'm stuck with no mouse
still and only the keyboard to work with. This pc has no internet commenction.
I can now get to stage where I'm asked for the W98SE cd but the driver
cannot be found?

Mr. Richards had asked you if the bios settings had changed...
if so you may have lost your com port
which you'd have to re-enable in the bios.
Usually setting it to "auto" will do the trick

Bios was set at 'auto' but all ports shown as disabled.
I changed to manual and all ports were then enabled.

Rebooted and mouse worked!!

Glad you got it working...
if it happens again, you'll know what to do

Thanks for letting us know you got it back. I wonder if the Epson
installation changed the BIOS settings for you.

I had an Epson printer once and disliked it because of the ink monitor
software. I now use an HP printer which I have been satisfied with for a
while and use the Windows 2000 drivers on my 98 Second Edition machine and it
works fine in both 98 SE and in XP Professional since I have a dual-boot. I
never knew hardware would go ahead and change BIOS settings and that
certainly does not sound good. Thanks for letting us know.

Though I personally have not had problems with Epson printers...
I know the bios setting can change...
probably is the bios is set to plug&play.

At one time I had made quite a few hardware changes,
so I cloned my main drive and tested it.

My hardware changes turned out to be unusable
so I put the original H/W back but could not get that configuration
going...
so I popped in the cloned drive and still had the problem

only then did I think to look in the bios and saw that settings had changed!
