Software Compatibility (kids games) with Win 98SE

I have brought my old Win 98 SE back to life for my grandsons (ages 5 & 6) to
play their internet games (specifically www.totaldramaisland.com). I worked
with MEB on the Win 98 Networking forum and he was very helpful. I have now
performed my Windows Updates, installed IE6, Avast Antivirus, Kerio Personal
Firewall. Installed Flash 9 (which shows up in Add/Remove programs as Adobe
Flash Player ActiveX). Additionally, he suggested I install SUN JAVA. At the
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp I found Jave SE
Downloads-Previous Release_J2SE 5.0
I can find J2SE API V 1.5.0 Beta1, J2SE API V 1.5.0 Beta 2, and J2SE API V
1.5.0RC, but NOT the version MEB recommended which was version 1.5.0 ( build
1.5.0.16).

When I access the game site, it tells me I need to update my Flash Player
and the game won't launch!

Additionally, MEB suggested I install onto Firefox the add on NoScript.
Could someone give me some hints as to which sites are safe to 'allow'? For
example, on the game site, 2 of the sites with scripts are cachefly.com and
monitis.com. When I google search them, they appear as reputable sites. But
I'm reluctant to 'always allow' without feeling safer with them. Any
thoughts would be appreciated.

If you have Flash 9 installed
you should actually see the following entry in add/remove programs:

Adobe Flash Player 9 activeX


If you do not specifically see "Flash Player 9"
then you do not have it

The entry: Adobe Flash Player activeX
is simply an additional component

You may need to go to the Adobe Flash site and download it.

OTOH: The kinds of games that require Flash might be fairly sophisticated...
and maybe you'd be better off just getting a few game CD's for your kids...
They may be more appropriate...and you would not have to worry whether or
not you were going to a safe site.

Anyway that's progress for you,
when I was 6 years old, the only games we had were sticks and stones <G>

(or maybe an old tennis ball)

Go here to see what version of Java you're running:

Java 6 may not be officially "certified" for Windows 98, but I'm not
aware of any problems with running it on win-98.

Note that win-98 (perhaps only 98se) came with an old version of java
that can be (or should be) uninstalled. Do this first before you
install any newer version from Sun.

To get rid of the version of java that came with Windows 98, do this:

- Click Start, Run and enter this:
- RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall

You may (or will) see a message saying "If this component is
uninstalled, Microsoft Internet Explorer will not be able to
download files from the World Wide Web. Do you want to
uninstall the Microsoft VM?"

- Click Yes to confirm the uninstall, and restart your system
when it's complete.

- Delete the following folders if they are still present:
c:\windows\java
c:\windows\inf\java.pnf
c:\windows\system32\jview.exe
c:\windows\system32\wjview.exe

- Click Start, Run and enter regedit to start the Registry
Editor. Browse to the following keys, highlight and
delete them:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Java VM
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet_Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM

Philo,
I downloaded (what i thought was) Flash Player 9 from this site:

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb406791&sliceId=2

The downloaded file was:
install_flash_player_9_ax.exe

When it installs, it appears in my Add/Remove Programs as:
Adobe Flash Player ActiveX

I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it ~ thinking I had done something
wrong....but obtained the same results.

The game will still not launch.
Thoughts?

Thanks 98 Guy for your response. Before I go through your steps, I want to
make sure I am understanding what you say....

When I go to the http://javatester.org/version.html, I click on the "Click
here to Download Plugin" icon.

When that runs, it says that the following plugins are available:
X Java Runtime Environment.

When I click Next, it gives me a message the No Plugins were installed. And
I have the option to do a Manual Install.

When I click Manual Install, it takes me to this website to install a Java
Download for Windows 98. where there are 2 options available.

At this point I did NOT proceed. Do I have Java installed or not????

Then I did the Start, run, Run dll32 (etc) and received the message that you
quoted. This makes me think that I DO have a version of Java installed.

But before proceeding (since I will be editing the registry), I wanted to
make sure I was heading in the right direction.

I assume that IF I am heading in the right direction and need to proceed
with your instructions, that my next step then would be to install the
program:

jre-6u10-windowss-i586-p.exe???

Thank you so much for your help! I've been looking at this all day and will
likely wait until I am fresh in the morning to proceed. If you could just
confirm I am reading this correctly, I'll proceed.

Just a little clarification.

The JAVA you have is Microsoft's original [since we discussed OS in the
networking discussion] and you now have the SUN JAVA *online hook* AX
[ActiveX].

You will need SUN JAVA *runtime environment*. which is why 98Guy wants you
to uninstall Microsoft's outdated version. Be careful modifying the
registry.

FLASH and SHOCKWAVE are also needed. There are some who complain of system
slowdowns or worse when these are installed.
However, since this is the kids computer [protecting your own personal ones]
and with 733mhz. CPU 456megs. it should do fairly well as long as
installation goes okay.

One more item comes into play,,, your video card... what do you have in the
computer?

That looks like the right place...
I see they have two versions though...
if you go the one specific for your browser it should work.

On my machine, in add/remove programs it specifically says Flash Player 9
though.

If you are using Internet Explorer

double check your settings

The option "play animations in web pages" should be checked

In the lower part of the page after scrolling down you will see the download
for Sun Java 5 update 16. Note, Sun Java will be discontinuing Sun Java 5
effective on October 30, 2009 so you still have some time.

Another note to consider with Adobe Flash Player is version 9.x is now not

98 Second Edition especially since it will work in Windows 2000 and 98 Guy
previously was able to apply Windows 2000 patches for Internet Explorer 6.x
to Windows 98 Second Edition. I tried the experiment for a while as well
with no *.dll so far but have discontinued it since I use Mozilla Firefox 2.x
as my browser in both 98 Second Edition and XP Professional.

I went through the uninstall instructions provided. I tried to install Jave
6 (jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe. It did NOT install. So I installed Java 5
(jdk-1_5_0_16-windows-i586-p.exe). This DID install ok. Now in my Add Remove
Programs I have:
J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 16
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 16
Flash Player ActiveX

When I went to the website to identify what version of Java I am running:
Java Version: 1.5.0_16

Then I went to http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/ and found
the details for Shockwave Player 11 that said it was Win 98 compatible. When
I tried to download it, it gave me the error: Sorry, your platform is not
supported.

The kids game (www.totaldramaisland) continues to say I need to upgrade my
Flash Player.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My grandkids are coming for a
visit on Friday.

Also, MEB asked what video card I had:

Belarc shows NVIDIA Vanta (HP-English) [Display Adapter]

At this point, I suspect I have a *current Win 98* Java installed, but still
need Flash 9 and Adobe Shockwave??? I have a downloaded file named:
install_flash_player_9_ax.exe. However, I have installed and uninstalled it
twice, and all that appears in my Add/Remove Programs is Adobe Flash Player
ActiveX.

I know I must be doing something very wrong....but sure can't figure out
what it is!

Thank you for trying to help me. I have downloaded that file
(install_flash_player_9_ax.exe). It shows up in my Add/Remove programs as
Adobe Flash Player ActiveX. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it 3 times
now and I still get the message on Firefox that my Flash Player needs to be
upgraded.

The game will run on my IE6 ~ however MEB recommended I not let my grandkids
use IE to play their games for security reasons I think.

It's almost like this thing is taking on a life of it's own! Now in my
system try I have a JAVA 2 Platform Icon.

Any thoughts?

If the game will run on IE6 then it's ok

that version of Flash may not run on other borwsers

If you use Firefox...
then try the Mozilla version

There are TWO versions of Flash. The version for Internet Explorer
shows up in add/remove as "Active X". If you want to use Firefox you
MUST use the version for Netscape/Mozilla. It will show up in
Add/Remove as "Flash Player Plugin". These are "Browser Plugins" and
you can install BOTH if you use both browsers.

Apparently I have successfully installed the install_flash_player_9_ax for
IE. When I double click on the Mozilla (which is my preferred browser) it
brings up the download box, but the SAVE button is grayed out and only the
cancel button can be selected. Perhaps that is why the game will run on IE
but not Firefox??????

Any more thoughts???

but you can download the Mozilla version at the link you were given
previously
and install it as a direct download

I know I am sounding dense ~ but I tried to download the Firefox on the link
provided and the download box had the "SAVE" button was grayed out. My only
option was to Cancel.

So, as Plan B, I downloaded the link on my Vista Laptop and copied it to a
Flash drive and took it downstairs to the HP Win 98 computer and double
clicked on the install_flash_player_9.exe. Then IT WORKED! Now the kids
program will run!!

Thank you so VERY MUCH!!!!! I'm not sure what else I might need at this
point for boys (age 5 & 6) to play their little games. After 'chatting' with
MEB, I might be inclined to install a strong Parental Control program to only
allow the websites I approve.

If there is anything else I need to install, I'd appreciate knowing.....

The last supported [if you want to call it that] of SUN JAVA is the one you
have installed. IF its now working in both IE and FireFox, then you might
want to stay with it. Make sure to go to the Control Panel as I previously
mentioned, and limit what can be done in JAVA.

IF you still don't have what you need in FireFox remember you must INSTALL
most *pluggins/add-ons*, downloading them does no good. Use the Mozilla
pages when looking for and installing.

A parental control program would be good, however, I had already directed
you to the HOSTS file which would take care of many of the problems
associated with children and the Internet. When my kids were young I used a
Program Called NetNanny [they never knew it was installed]....
