As MEB said, you probably can stay with JRE 5 Update 16 for now. I've
been looking, but unless I install it I can't find it's release or
build-date anywhere, so I don't know how old (or new?) it is compared to
JRE 6 update 7.

What is the file-date of the file javaw.exe on your system now?

In Control Panel Java I see where the Network Settings are set to use
Browser Settings. What other settings to I need to check/or change and what
do I need to limit?

Currently in Firefox, I have only 2 add-ons. NoScript 1.8.3.3 and Talkback
2.0.0.11

I searched add-ons for Java, Flash and Shockwave. The only one that I
thought might be applicable was a Java Console for Java SE 1.5.0_12 (which
was the closest to my version of 1.5.0_16). Which add-ons should I include
at this point. I'm kind of out of my element as to exactly what I'm looking
for here.

I didn't find any add-on capability in IE 6.

At this point, if I allow scripts in Firefox, the game will play. It also
plays fine in IE6.

Is there anything else I need to install/add?

That version (5up16) is probably ok. It's only 1 month older than 6up7.

In control panel - java - I'd remove the "check for updates
automatically" setting. No need to run that any more (that's the
setting responsible for jusched.exe being loaded at system startup).

I've never messed with any other settings.

I don't know why someone would want to be running the Java console.

If you're going to be doing any bit-torrent stuff, you probably want to
get peer guardian.

By the way, do you know how I can get rid of that annoying pop up window for
Networking that asks for a password. I have not set a password but need to
either cancel or close it out before it will continue to boot into windows98?

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network > Configuration tab

Under "Primary Network Logon" choose "Windows Logon" from the drop
down menu. Click "OK". You may have to reboot to have the setting take
effect.

IS the above correct?

Oh, one more thing, you really don't need the JAVA Development Kit unless
someone thinks you do.

No worries with Sun Java 5 for now because it says it will be supported until
October 30, 2009 so why the rush. I am using Sun Java 5 runtime with update
16 and it works fine in Windows 98 Second Edition. You just need to keep an
eye out for when Sun updates Sun Java 5 to update 17 because version 16 will
then be outdated. A more immediate concern will be with Mozilla Firefox 2.x
because Mozilla is scheduled to end its support in the middle of December
2008 for Firefox 2.x and then everyone who still uses Windows 98 with Firefox
2.x should switch to another supported browser for the 98 operating system.

Thanks for the summary. I had some personal business to tend to so it was
good for me to walk away and then come back for a final look. I am afraid
that I do not have the Shockwave installed. My notes say that
(http://www.adobe.com/shockwavy/download/alternates/) Shockwave Player 11 is
compatible with Windows 98. But when I tried to pursue installation, it gave
me the message, "Sorry, your platform is not supported."

In my Add/Remove Programs I have:
Adobe Flash Player ActiveX
Adobe Flash Player Plugin
J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 16
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 16
Sun (TM) Download Manager

Additionally, I have installed:
Avast!
Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5
IE6
Spybot Search & Destroy
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Spyware Blaster 4.1

Mozilla Firefox add on No Script

I have not yet installed Hosts, but will do that.

My biggest (and pretty much only) concern at this point is Shockwave.

Any thoughts there? Or do I have it installed and not know it? The
grandkids 2 online game sites are working ok at this point.

Okay, you have just about everything needed.. after installing the HOSTS
file... at least for the 9X environment.

If you don't need Flash for the Kid's games then DON'T install it.... just
one more vulnerability to deal with...
WHEN they finally get to the point they need it, then ask in here again.....
and we will help determine if what is presently available should be
installed or what can be installed..

Like I said before, if you've done the system updates from windowsupdate,
then block off IE access to the Internet in Kerio firewall. I say this
because Kids notoriously go to sites that will get them in trouble and IE6
[which received dozens of updates on the supported systems] on 9X is just
too vulnerable for Kids to use now.

Remember to make that image/backup of the 9X computer to your network or
DVD/CDROM somewhere so you can avoid the headaches when it gets trashed by
the Kids. Do this BEFORE they start using it regularly....

You MAY want to block the 9X Kid's box from access to the rest of your
network after the backup... they can still use the router and Internet
access, but anything they do or "catch" can't be readily transferred to the
rest of the network.

I was reading one of my PC Magazine online subscriptions and they had an
article about "Older Version Software". One of the highlighted programs was
Adobe Shockwave. The most current "Older Version" was Adobe Shockwave
10.0.0.016 (shockwave1011016.exe). When I installed it, it went through the
installation process fine until the very end. It said it would be installed
into the following browsers:
Internet Explorer
Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.17
At the very end, I got these 2 errors:

I can't see anything in Add/Remove programs OR Firefox Add-ons (not sure
where to look in IE) to indicate that Adobe Shockwave was installed. Should
I try the next older version?

Also, could you give me some more information as to how to do the Image Back
up of my 98 system? I use an external hard drive and Acronis to back up my
other 2 computers, but I'm suspecting that neither is compatible with Windows
98.

How do I block access to my network and still allow access to the internet?
That sounds like a very good idea. Currently, I have the Windows 98 box, a
Windows XP box and a Vista Laptop on my wireless network. But to my
knowledge, none of the computers can 'talk' or 'share' with each other. My
router is a Linksys WRT610N if that helps.

Hmm. Couldn't do Firefox.

Go back to the site with Firefox running as your browser and see what it
offers.

I haven't installed v11 or any other version in this system [in fact I used
the uninstaller and full registry cleanup to get rid of it]
I used this:

{Screws up my Dreamweaver but oh welllllllll.} and Regseeker.

IF<<< it installed it would be found in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MACROMED\FLASH the
second being SHOCKWAVE[or at least that's where it used to install], and it
should show in the registry...

BTW: you need to stop using Scheduled Tasks [the icon with the 32 over the
window by the clock] when installing programs. It can *really* interfer with
installations.

Acronis should work depending upon the version. IF you can presently access
the Win98 computer from the computer with Acronis True Image installed, just
use it to image the 98 computer to your backup drive. If you can't then:
For this you need to allow File and Printer Sharing on the 9X box [Control
Panel>Network>File and Printer Sharing], then in Explorer share the entire
disk [right click>Sharing] on the 98 computer - see if your other Acronis
computer can see it.

If it can't post some info:
On the 98 box type winipcfg in the RUN box>click More Info>right click on
the menu bar and save.
On the XP/VISTA {Acronis} in Command>ipconfig - save the results.

IF it can make a choice of the entire disk or just the Windows and Program
Files areas..

IF you can't,,, what version of True Image do you have? There are a number

I tried to install Shockwave 10.1.1.016 before you responded back not to.
Sorry about that. At this point I have:

C:\Windows\System\Macromed\Flash (with 8 files under Flash Folder). Then I
also have folders Shock 7, Shockwave and Shockwave 10 (each with a folder
under named Xtras and each have files under that folder).

I'm afraid I may have made a mess of things. Should I use your uninstall
program to get rid of everything? I'll wait to hear from you before
proceeding.

I got the Task Scheduler PAUSED. Can I just take it out of Start UP??

After going through your sharing steps, I can now see my Win 98 C: drive
from my Vista laptop, but not my XP desktop. Do I need to change some
settings on the XP as well?

My Acronis is Acronis True Image Home V. 11 (Build 8,101). My external hard
drive is Seagate Free Agent 500 GB. On the Seagate box is says compatible
with Vista and Win XP. But I guess that would be a moot point if I am
actually kicking off the back up from the Vista laptop, right?

When I tried to download Shockwave 11 from your link, I got an error that my
platform was not compatible. They showed a website:
Adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_18629
Here I found SW851_Installer_full.exe. I have downloaded it but NOT
installed it and won't do so until I hear from you.

Thank you for your offer to get my computers really "Networked" after we get

Adobe says to use the uninstaller for the older versions. The 10 version
uses the - unwise.exe - in the Shock10 folder [which is claimed as
system32\shock10,, which means its actually for NT based systems]. So
*first* uninstall 10 either through control panel or by using unwise [try
double clicking it], then use the uninstaller for the old versions..

NOTE that *version 9* is the last shown on that page for older versions
......

That's 'probobly' the last one I tested... but really, unless you need it -
it may be best to leave it uninstalled.. check the Kid's sites for a need.

ALSO, did you setup the AVAST! proxy server for the browsers yet???

Can't tell without the IP/network settings... look at what you were to do
again [winipcfg and ipconfig]. And post the results from 98 and XP.

Yeah, IF< VISTA/Acronis can see the disk AND completely access the
networked 98 [which you apparently are], try to back it up.

MEB,
First I executed the unwise.exe that was in my Shock 10 folder. Then I
executed the sw_uninstaller.exe. The kids games will still play, but I must
enable all scripts on the website for them to play.

Yes, I set up the Avast! proxy server for the browsers.

I set task manager to STOP USING TASK MANAGER, but when I rebooted, it came
back into my system tray. So should I take it out of Start UP?

Next, I ran winipcfg on the 98 computer. Here are the results:

I tried to Start/Run/ipconfig on the XP and a black box VERY briefly flashed
before my eyes and evaporated. I tried this several times (and rebooted)
with the same results. Am I doing something wrong?

Finally, I tried to do a back up of my Win 98 HP C:\ drive that is displayed
in my Network Folder under HPPavillion. From the Vista Laptop, I launched
Acronis and selected: Back Up. The next choices were: My Computer, My Data,
My Applications and My Email. I selected My Computer. The next choice was:
Disk and Partitions OR System State. I selected Disks and partitions. It
displayed my hard drive, my external hard drive and my flash drive. But NOT
my NETWORK folder to select. Any thoughts? Also, I was thinking.......IF I
get the 98 backed up onto my external hard drive and need to do a "restore"
from it, how would I accomplish that? The external hard drive and Acronis
are not compatible with Windows 98.

Well good at the Flash/Shock uninstall and that it isn't need for those
sites,,, bad that it requires ALL scripts, however, the HOSTS file, AVAST!,
and some other settings such as the JAVA in control panel [you set them
right?] will provide a measure of protection. At least that provides
protection on the other sites they will likely start visiting.
You might want to install another application called WinPatrol to protect
HOSTS and several other areas and files.... before you do, how is your free
memory doing? Here's a little tool to check:

Most of us have LOTS of other things going on and these help groups are
"break time", meaning links to other things may NEVER be checked unless its
a tool or something we might want or need. Plus, the whole reason for these
help groups is to provide searchable data bases for potential fixes to
issues others might encounter. Links go dead all the time, hard info
provides something for them to see and compare.

Like I said, others would have more information on Acronis {where the heck

BUT, if you create the 98 computer's disk as a *mapped drive* on the VISTA,
you MIGHT be able to work around the non-networked version of True Image..
not sure on this idea, but worth a try unless someone pops in here with some
better info...

What is the manufacturer and model of your external drive [and enclosure if
using a self made external]... and how large???

Do you have a thumb or flash drive or other similar storage device? And USB
on the 98 box?
If so, there is a free imaging program called partitionsaving that works
well from DOS and does a nice job. Run it, saving to a local folder, move
that folder to the VISTA box.
Forgot to ask, does the 98 computer have a CDROM burning drive? If so use
the burning software to put that image on a CD, make a startup disk, put
partitionsaving on the floppy and there's your backup and software.
[partionsaving.com for the tool, was free]
Others might suggest using BING to do the same backup... they can supply
how to do the backup....

If the above fails, ZIP up the 98 drive from Explorer to the VISTA disk OR
copy the disk to VISTA and create a backup. Not exactly the best idea, and
includes some difficulties if needed.

I use Acronis (Ver 9) on my Win98SE box, and
Acronis (Ver 11) on both WinXP Boxes.
I have no trouble backing up on Win98SE or WinXP over my local network.
The clue is with FAT32 and NTFS.
The FAT 32 backup splits into 4Gb or less increments while NTFS does not
have that restriction (Vista as well)

I only have one NTFS partition on one WinXP box just for editing Movie
files.
Vista may be the problem? (or mixing FAT32 and NTFS)?
From the local PC shop techo "Networking other OS with Vista can be a dogs
breakfast" :)
