How do I correct spelling in Company Name?

R

Robert A. Macy

Dyslexia strikes again!

Soemwhere during installation of MS Office 2000 on my Win98SE, I
misspelled my company name by inverting two letters. Went unoticed
for eons.

Now, after noticing this error and upon creating a file, I have to
manually go to the new .xls, .doc, and ?? file, click on 'Properties'
and correct the spelling. Sometimes forget.

I don't want to reinstall anything, because everything is set up just
the way I want it [except for spelling]. Is there some simple way to
change the spelling that appears under 'company name'?

We believe you - the demonstration was unnecessary. :eek:)

Search the registry for the missspelled company name and
edit it there. Back up the registry before attempting this.

Searching the Registry for it is a good idea. My name is in this
Registry key...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
RegisteredOwner "My own real name"

But it is actually in SEVEN Registry keys. That one, two for WinZip, two
Network Associates/McAfee, one for Motive, & one for Microsoft Works.

To see yours...
(a) "START button, Run, Regedit".
"My Computer" should be highlighted in the left pane.
(b) Using the Edit menu, Find your name.
(c) If you so desire, R-Clk it in the right pane, & select "Modify".
(d) Proceed again from (b), until RegEdit says there are no more.

CAREFUL in the Registry, though. DON'T willy-nilly change anything you
see! Also, RegEdit's Find is SLOW-- be patient, or take...
http://www.pcmag.com/ 's Registry Detective, which incredibly will find
all matches to any search in 10 seconds & put them all to the screen for
examination. Take RegEdit+ as well!

Also, my name can be found in...
C:\WINDOWS\helpdesk\winrep\Userinfo.txt

To find more...
(a) "START button, Find, Files or Folders"
(b) Enter your name in the "Containing text" field"

There are utilities out there that will let you edit the registered
owner (how comprehensive they are in finding e. g. Office's variant, I
do not know). Obviously, they are just another bit of software to clog
up your system with, and presumably they just do the registry change
anyway. But you may like to try one or two. I'm pretty sure I've seen it
as one of the functions of a multi-tweak suite - isn't it one of the
things in TweakUI perhaps?

Which is under the "Advanced" tab in some versions of Win+F (which is my
way of doing your (a)).

(And if you thought Regedit's find was slow, just wait until you _do_ do
a text find on all files as described above!)

Win+F is nice. I guess those may be Win95 &/or WinME, which I've never
seen. Win98's Advanced tab has type & size boxes only.

Oops, yea, it will go through every file. That's right. Except one wants
to be thorough, one might try "*.txt, *.ini" in the Named box to get
just those file types. Omit the quotes , but include the comma.

THANK YOU! That worked.

Thank you everybody for suggestions. Although going just to the
registry and changing every location with the error looked good, it
did not work. It required that extra step Glen listed above.

Another program which I use regularly is RegSeeker, which also can check for
query strings in files....
A multi-purpose application,,, however not for inexperienced use as its
functions CAN cause issues when misused.

COA2? I wrote a review of that once. It only does "addresses", but does
it extraordinarily well...!...

http://www.pcmag.com/ 's COA2 will help with this. After you move a file
or folder, you may use COA2 to change system references to the new
address. It will change references in the current Registry and all
..ini's & shortcuts on all drives. Nothing else, however, is changed,
including Registry or other zipped backups, Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, or
anything. And, there was a reference in Autoexec.bat that I needed to
change (for a CD-R/W drive letter). It also will not change references
that are binary, but those are generally in MRU lists & will auto-adjust
in time.

| Yeah, used it but found that Regseeker provided more of what I

Maybe I'll take a look. At 260,096 bytes, it is about 1/3 the size of
Registry Detective. But it's more dangerous, if it is a cleaner too.

||
|| | And an OLD registry seeker/changer was Coa32 from PCMag....
||
|| COA2? I wrote a review of that once. It only does "addresses", but
|| does it extraordinarily well...!...
||
|| http://www.pcmag.com/ 's COA2 will help with this. After you move a
|| file or folder, you may use COA2 to change system references to the
|| new address. It will change references in the current Registry and
|| all .ini's & shortcuts on all drives. Nothing else, however, is
|| changed, including Registry or other zipped backups, Autoexec.bat,
|| Config.sys, or anything. And, there was a reference in Autoexec.bat
|| that I needed to change (for a CD-R/W drive letter). It also will
|| not change references that are binary, but those are generally in
|| MRU lists & will auto-adjust in time.
|
| Right,, not for the problem presented but definately worth a mention
| when discussing registry apps...

OK. That's right. That Neil J. Rubenking is/was a good one.
