Windows 98 Product Key

I was on computer today and went to shutdown computer when I was done. The
computer shutdown then restart requesting information as if I had reformatted
the computer. It asked for name and company then product key code which is
back of CD package. I bought this computer used and didn't receive any of
the software discs for it. How do I go about getting a new product code or
retreiving my old one? Any help that anyone could give would be greatly
appreciated. Have a great day!

1. Ignore this "request" and assume you have a virus because the
request is non-standard in Win98.

2. Try to boot to DOS (use a DOS floppy if needed) and do
c:\windows\SCANREG /RESTORE
This should get you a choice of (five?) earlier Registries to
boot from. Select any date prior to today's suspicious malfunction.
If one does not work try another.

3. When you can boot either regular Windows or Safe Mode
/ start / run / regedit
and do / Edit / Find
to locate ProductKey
and ProductID
and write down both in case of future need.
Then run an effective virus/malware detector and take appropriate action.

It may indeed be faster to reinstal Win98 if you have the
appropriate SETUP files on the hard drive or can beg or
borrow an instal CD. (Laptops may require special custom
files to reboot, but almost any desktop can reinstal from
almost any instal CD.) Read first
