Moving My Pictures

C

caroloyl

Hi Folks

I'm always SO glad to find you guys here :))) I'm still using and loving
Me and have had no problems with the OS for ages but have just reinstalled
it after yet another C drive failure--my third in two and a half years
:-( Maxtors and Samsungs)

I've been reinstalling my essential programs and helpers for a week now but
before I reup and setup my favorite image handler (PhotoImpact) I thought
I'd ask if anyone has ever tried moving My Pictures out of My Documents
(where it's buried!) and what the results might have been. I notice that
TweakUI offers the option to move it but I'm reluctant to try that without
knowing if the default folder-view of thumbnails will stick. I definitely
do NOT want to be clicking to "View thumbnails" every time I browse to My
Pictures from dialog boxes--especially because I keep all images and
personal folders to use with my graphics programs inside of it!

I think a dandy place to put it would be on the desktop in the same manner
My Documents is found there. Is that possible?

Much thanks for feedback :))

Carol,

My Documents on your desktop is only a shortcut, albeit a special sort of
shortcut called a NameSpace which is an entry in the registry that appears
on the desktop as a link, so if you don't want to move the location of
your My Pictures folder using TweakUI why not create a shortcut to it on
your desktop?

As for using TweakUI to move the location of the MyPhotos folder, then
yes, I do this on every machine that I configure, as I do for the desktop,
my documents, my music, temp, temporary internet files, virtual memory,
outlook express message store and very much more.

Hi Mike

Thanks for the speedy response :)))

Wish I were so bold as to just jump right in and try something new like
moving this folder. I might could since I only have Me wallpapers in My
Pics at the moment--but as I said, fear of losing the default thumbnail
view has held me back.

What I was hoping for with the desktop location ("NameSpace") was that it
would put My Pictures at the top of the tree in Windows Explorer along with
My Docs. A traditional shortcut works from the desktop but it doesn't show
up in the folder tree either in WinEx or in dialog boxes where it would be
most convenient for me--and though there's a link to My Pics on the Places
Bar, not every dialog box has one :-(

Am curious to know where you put My Pics et al to make them more
accessible. I do always move OE's store into My Docs as "My Mail"--where I
find it easier to back up.

Mentioning backups has brought to mind another question I need to ask. Will
make a new post for it -)

What do you mean by "More Accessible"?
Why not put a link to it on the taskbar?
Right-click the Taskbar
Point to Toolbars > New Toolbar
Browse to My Pictures in the dialogue box, click OK
Click on the double arrows that appear on the taskbar,
to show all your files and folders in "My Pictures"

Or ...

Right-click the taskbar > Properties > Start Menu tab
Click "Customise", check mark in "Expand My Pictures"

So, to see all your files and folders in "My Pictures",
Start > My Pictures ...

Hi George

Thanks for responding. I do have My Pics expanded on the Start menu's
"Documents" list (Start>Documents>My Pictures) --I also have a
shortcut to My Pics on a "Folders" toolbar I made on my taskbar.

My problem is having to wade down to My Pictures through the My
Docs' folder when I'm looking for an image file to use from -within- my
graphics programs (Paint Shop Pro and PhotoImpact). Some of those programs'
"Open" dialogs have the Places Bar, and there's no problem with them: I get
to My Pics with one click. But both programs also have browse-for-image
dialog boxes without Places Bars (my HTML editor doesn't have one either)
and these are a hassle . . . especially because I'm really tired of doing
all that digging -b Having My Pictures at the top of the drop-down lists
in the Open dialogs (like My Docs is) would eliminate much of the browse
necessary to get to My Pictures in Open dialogs lacking the Places Bar.

I see your difficulty, but can offer no answer.
I use Adobe CS2 to edit images, this has it's own
dialogue window for opening files from within the
programme, and includes "My Pictures" as one of the 'Places'.

Mike,

I need a shortcut to My Pictures that will show up in the folder-list
drop-downs in the dialog boxes inside my imaging programs--and the ordinary
variety of shortcut doesn't. Is there a way I can manually create a
"NameSpace" shortcut to it on my desktop? TweakUI offers to do this for
other Windows folders but does not include My Pictures in its options :-\

In a word, no, or at least not easily. However I do have a problem in
understanding what your problem is. For example, I don't understand your
My Pictures folder or whatever you might choose to call it cannot be
accessed like any other folder from the dialogue box in your imaging
programs. I guess that I'm missing something here.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for responding. There are two problems with PhototImpact's "Open"
and "Save" dialogs--one is that some of them lack the Places Bar so they
look like this (10 KB):

http://www.caroloyls.com/_examples/pi_saveasdialog-noplacesbar.png

The other (and you're probably already wondering why I don't just do this)
is that if I click on the "Desktop" entry at the top of the drop-down list,
PhotoImpact hangs attempting to list what's there (not related to
Millennium--it's PI's problem).

I have an ordinary shortcut to My Pictures on the desktop and from the
screen print you can see it doesn't show up in the list--so my choices for
making image-browsing easier seem to be either:

--moving My Pictures to the desktop where it would be subject to ravaging by
System Restore but clickable on dialog drop-down lists like any other
desktop folder (excluding the Desktop folder itself of course)
--or leaving it inside My Documents and creating a "NameSpace" shortcut for
it so like My Docs it will appear as a folder in dialog drop-down lists.

Not a life and death matter--just a dream for quicker browsing since I spend
so much of my time looking for pictures '-))

An afterthought: would using TweakUI to remove My Network Places from the
desktop cause any problems? I have no use for it.

Now that shouldn't happen, as I realise you know, but this could be a Win
Me problem rather than PI.

> one is that some of them lack the Places Bar

Ah the beauties of TweakUI for XP! In XP TweakUI allows the user to
customize the five locations that appear in the Places Bar since in XP
they are stored in the registry rather than being hard coded as in Win Me.

> --moving My Pictures to the desktop where it would be subject to
> ravaging by System Restore

Whilst storing files in a location other than My Documents (and a few
other places including Temp and TIF) does mean that System Restore will
monitor the contents of the folder remember that SR has no interest in any
graphics or media files such as those with jpg, bmp, tif, gif or png
extensions. If you want to know which file extensions are monitored by SR
then have a look at the <EXTENSIONS> <Include> section of the file
filelist.xml located at C:Windows\System\Restore (you can open it using
notepad). You will find that SR has no interest is the vast majority of
user data files and can, if necessary, be easily modified to exclude any
specific file type that a user needs to exclude. Details available of how
to so do if required.

Yes and no but if you are a single user and not on a LAN sharing files
with another PC then go for it.
