My Pictures

Well, I did it again! I had so many pictures that I opened different
folders to identify the places, people, etc. This worked well. However, by
mistake *I deleted the My Pictures folder*, which only had a dozen pics.
Question is: How do I get the My Pictures folder back where it was? that is:
Start|My Documents|My Pictures.
I have tried System Restore and have also run the Restoration program.
Neither of them worked, since the folder was deleted.
Is there a command thru Start|Run to get back the My Pictures Folder (with
the camera icon on the envelope)? Or any other way to place that folder back
where is supposed to be?
Does it really make a difference not to have the aforementioned protocol and
use separate folders for my own pictures within My Documents instead? Or as
a toolbar in the system tray?
Would appreciate your suggestions.
Thanks,
Ed

Have you tried making a new folder in My Documents called My Pictures?

System Restore restores system files and registry settings not folders and
specifically nothing in the user data area with My Documents and its
content being explicitly excluded. Why? Well you don't want to lose user
data such as new documents, pictures or e-mail messages created today
because you used system restore to roll back the system to the state it
was in yesterday.

Yes Mike, I have a folder within My Documents named My Pictures.
I just would like to move this folder over to were it was, but can't.
When I point to Start|My Documents, there is an extension for My Documents,
however the box underneath reads: (Empty). This is where My Pictures Folder
used to be.
There has to be a way to move the folder over. I have restarted the system
and everything remains the same.
Thanks,
Ed

"Over to where it was". What do you mean please? By default My Pictures
is located within My Documents, or more precisely at C:\My Documents\My
Pictures but like any of the Windows special folders can be relocated by
the user to wherever they want. For example on my PCs both My Documents
and My Pictures are renamed and relocated on another drive with My
Documents being D:\Data and My Pictures being D:\Pictures.

Rather than play directly with the registry and possibly make more of a
mess I would suggest you download and use v1.33 of TweakUI (this is the
version for Win Me). Since Win Me is long out of support by Microsoft it
has been removed from their download centre so you need to grab a copy
from a third party site such as Download.com
(http://www.download.com/3000-2341-2830963.html)

Download to a folder with a short name (e.g. C:\Tweak), run to extract
components, right click on tweakui.inf and then install, close the help
window that comes up to allow install to finish. C:\Tweak can now be
deleted and TweakUI accessed via the Control Panel.

Start TweakUI and open the "My Computer" tab. At the bottom you will see
a section labelled Special Folders. Select "My Pictures" from the Folder
drop down list, click the button Change Location and change the target to
wherever you now want your My Pictures folder located. When done click
Apply.

Just a few words of caution if you are new to using TweakUI on Win Me.
a) Do not change the first icon (My Documents) on the Desktop tab.
Doing this causes a number of script errors in Special Folders when using
either WebView or Active desktop.
b) Do not uncheck "Search Results" on the Desktop tab.
Doing this disables the Search in Explorer.
c) Do not hide the TweakUI icon on the Control Panel tab.
d) Do not uncheck "Show Control Panel on Start Menu" on the IE tab.
Doing this will prevent you from accessing the Control Panel including
TweakUI.
e) Do not uncheck "Shell Enhancements" on the IE tab.
This causes quite a few unexpected "problems".

First off, thank you for the time you took to write down the instructions. I
downloaded TweakUI as directed. However, it's only showing in Add/Remove
Programs, it is not showing in the Control Panel.
Before I do anything foolish, I am asking you what steps I should take.
1) Should I uninstall/remove the TweakUI program and associated files? Then
try and download it again?
2) Any other reason why is not showing in the Control Panel?

Regarding My Pictures & the question you had about "Over to where it was" -
I meant the desktop (sorry, didn't say so in my OP).

I will await your instructions & thank you again for your time.

Ed,

I have no idea why TweakUI is not showing in the Control Panel. Or if I
did I have long since forgotten, my memory not being what it once was.

You can either uninstall TweakUI and try installing it again or perhaps
try the following:
Start | Run, enter Tweakui.cpl in the box and then click OK which should
then launch TweakUI.

I found the reason why TweakUI was not in the Control Panel - by re-reading
your prior instructions. Somehow, the box for the TweakUI icon on the
Control Panel tab was unchecked. I placed a check mark on it and it's now
in the Control Panel.

Going back to your instructions on the "My Computer" tab....the section
labelled Special Folders does not have "My Pictures" in the folder drop down
list. That is why I can not change such location.
I've decided to just leave it as is. I mean to say: keep opening more
folders within My Documents for different types of pics, places, people,
etc.
I think you have enough on your mind & I truly appreciate your time and
effort.
Thanks & greetings from Seattle.

What have you done to your system? <g> The registry appears to be damaged
and missing a value.

Let's have one last go to see if we can get things back as they were.
Open Regedit (Start, Run, Regedit, OK). In the left hand pane browse to
the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders by clicking the + signs as you navigate to the target key.

Now switch to the right hand pane and look for the value My Pictures. If
located, double click and set the data to the location of your My Pictures
folder, by default, C:\My Documents\My Pictures.

If the right hand pane has no "My Pictures" value, as might be the case if
it doesn't appear in TweakUI, right click on a blank space in the right
hand pane and select New | String Value and give it the name "My Pictures"
(without the quotes but with the space between My and Pictures). Now
double click the new My Pictures value and enter the location of the
folder that you want targeted in the value data box, by default "C:\My
Documents\My Pictures" (again, without the quotes but with the spaces).

Hopefully this should fix the problem of the missing My Pictures object.

You are a genius and a scholar! As well as our salvation - for many of us in
this newsgroup. Yes, the value in the Registry for "My Pictures" did not
have the correct path - there were only two quotes (") *with nothing in
between*. As soon as I followed your concise directions, voilà, this
fixed the problem of My Pictures.
I don't know how to thank you enough. Thanks a bunch - AGAIN!
Best regards,
Ed

Ed,

Glad to have been able to help. Nevertheless am a little intrigued as to
why TweakUI didn't allow you to modify the path, I'm guessing it doesn't
display a Special Folder if the current path is null.

Cheers,

Mike M

Mike,
You are most welcome. I can also understand why you are a bit intrigued as
of why TweakUI didn't allow me to modify the path. Your guess appears to be
correct: since *the path was null* - TweakUI just didn't display the
Special Folder. Once the registry was corrected, *everything is displaying
as it should.*
Cheers!
