Re: Vista and firewire 1394?

I have the same problem with vista 64bit home premium - it won't
recognise my panasonic dv VTR but it recognises my panasonic mini dv
camera, thus i cannot capture or preview my editing on an external
monitor as the dv deck is not recognised and i use large format dv
tapes! Tried with movie maker too apart from adobe cs4 but still i get a
message saying that "could not find a compatible digital video device" .
my dv deck works fine with my Pentium 2 Win 98, Pentium 4 XP and Core 2
Duo laptop with Win XP Media Centre but with my new quadcore vista 64
bit NO.....any solution to this problem from anyone - mostly from
Microsoft which seems to be the culprit?

I think that you are wrong saying that 1394 and 1394a are not the same.
They have the same protocol but operate at different speeds. 1394 is
100Mbs and 1394a is 400Mbs and 1394b is 800Mbs. From what I have
gathered, 1394b is not supported within Vista but third party drivers
are available (StarTech.com/UniBrain.com). The issue that we are having
is that Firewire works on some systems and not on others.

I've been researching this issue for a couple of months collecting
ideas and trying fixes on my own. What I have found is the following:

1. Most users running XP don't have a problem with 1394.
2. Some XP 64 users had a system that worked up until a MS update
killed their 1394.
3. Most Vista 32 users are having success with 1394 (I'm one).
4. Most Vista 64 users are NOT having any success with 1394 (I'm one).
5. Some Vista 64 users have found that by doing a Registry hack
(Enumeration) their problems were fixed.
6. Some Vista 64 users found that the Enumeration hack DID NOT have any
effect or limited effect.
7. In all cases of problems, Windows Device Manager reports that all is
well when it is not.

I have two systems and Firewire works on one and not the other! Vista
64 seems to be the problem. My Sony Vaio running VHP32 works with my
Sony cameras while my i7 based PC running VHP64 does not. I have tried
three different chip set interface cards and they all do the same thing.
They will not reconize ANY 1394 device, while the Vaio does. Same
cables, same cameras, different OS.

Hi,

I have managed to get my Canon XH-A1 working on Vista and Windows
7(RTM) and use 1394 (fireware) card.

A bit of history before...
I have bought 1394 card a while ago. It is based on NEC d72873gc
microchip (which is still can be found on newer cards). This card worked
beautifully on Windows XP Professional but in Vista Professional and
Windows 7 Professional, Premiere Pro CS4 was giving me a white capturing
screen which later displayed 'Device Offline'. No tricks suggested by
Adobe and other websites worked.

After reading numerous posts and checking Vista and Windows 7 hardware
compatibility I have purchased 1394 card based on Texas Instruments
'TSB43AB22' (http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/tsb43ab22.html)
chipset from Ebay. After changing the card, I have no issues capturing
HDV or DV from the camera. No drivers, no tweaks, just pure
Plug-and-Play.

I hope this helps.

This is a Vista OS group. I'd suggest that you post in an XP group or a
video group to get answers...

Or even look on the Canon site.
