I have just restored my laptop to repartition the drives using the resotre
disks. After I upgraded XP to Service Pack 2 my default email software bgan
loading on start-up.

How can I stop this happening?

I have not installed any other software on my machine yet except Nortons
Internet Security and all of the XP updates.

Thanks.

And what is the default email software?

Take it out of the startup groups. Look in msconfig to see where it's
loading, and remove the reference.

Sorry to sound completely useless but where do I find msconfig? Could you
walk me through it? Thanks.

Click Start > Run, type in: msconfig and press Enter or click Ok.
Click the Startup tab.
Look for the app in the list and uncheck it.
If the app still starts on boot then it has an option in the app that needs to be
disabled.

What email application do you use? Run it, check the menus for preferences or
options and check to see if there is an option to run on startup.
If there is and it's selected, unselect it.

Click Start > Programs > StartUp to see if there is a shortcut to the app present.
If there is Right click on the shortcut and click Delete in the popup menu.

Hi Brian

Outlook Express but it doesn't matter it starts whatever email software I
set to default. Nothing in Start > Programs > StartUp except Desktop Search.

Thanks for your comment, do you have any other ideas?

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
