Problem report and Solutions says
Ethernet networking problem
You received this message because hardware or software in your computer
caused Windows to shut down unexpectedly and restart. This is a serious
problem, commonly referred to as a -stop error- or -blue screen-.
Although the specific cause of this problem is not known, it appears to
be related to Ethernet networking

How do I resolve this and what's causing it?
Thanks in advance

(snip unneeded/unwanted HJT log)

We don't analyze HijackThis logs here in the MS newsgroups. In any event,
your issue is not caused by malware.

The Stop Error and Problem Report indicates that your ethernet adapter is
the culprit. Either the drivers are bad or the hardware is bad. First
update the drivers (see below for details). Then go to Control Panel>Device
Manager and find the Intel ethernet adapter entry. Double-click it to get
its Properties. You will see a tab called "Power Management". Click on the
tab and clear the box that says "allow Windows to turn off this device when
not in use".

Now see if the issue is resolved. If it isn't, your hardware is bad and
should be replaced. Since this is probably an onboard adapter, if you have
a desktop machine you'll need to disable it in the BIOS and install a PCI
ethernet adapter (very inexpensive). If this is a laptop you won't be able
to fix this by yourself and will need to call the laptop mftr.'s tech
support. Of course you may want to do this in either case if the machine is
under warranty.

Addendum - Sorry, I forgot to give you the information about getting
drivers:

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

Hi Malke, many many thanks, i realised my error and tried to cut and
paste the thread, but as i was doing it the pc crashed again. Causing me
a bit of trouble all round. It is a desk top machine and under warrenty
so i'll get onto them asap.
Thanks again and sorry for the post in the wrong place - was in such a
rush to get it posted before the machine turns off I missed the key
phrase indicating where to post it.
