Need more information. Before you get into what processes it's running,
start with what it's running on.
What speed CPU? How many cores? How much RAM? What version Vista?

It would help people here if you posted the system specs.
At first glance it looks like you have everything running except the kitchen
sink. HP stuff can be turned off along with Roxio and Windows Media Player.
Did you have Firefox open when you posted this? If not, that'll suck your
CPU's. McAfee also runs so much background crap that it slows down high end
computers.

Your laptop is at SP1 while your desktop is at SP2 so maybe installing
SP2 on your laptop may help.
Also you seem to have a lot of stuff running in the background on your laptop.
Check the 04 entries and disable items you don't need to have running on every
boot, things like :
SunJavaUpdateSched
RoxWatchTray
DMXLauncher
Adobe Reader Speed Launcher

You may have to Google the others but I'm sure lots more can be disabled.

On the Dell I have a processor Intel Core 2 CPU 2 GHz, 2 GB of ram and
vista home premium.

I removed SunJavaUpdateSched, RoxWatchTray, DMXLauncher.

madox...I am having the EXACT same problems with my new HP lap. I have
already disabled everything in my start-up except my Norton.

did any of the things you did help the situation? The service pack etc?

dying to know before I do the same.

We joked about how our team consisted of some of the best IT Brains in the
Universe but could not get Vista to run on an HP Pavilion dv2000. We spent
over two days on this. One of the guys discovered that the BIOS didn't match
the model and after updating the SATA controller driver from the correct
model, Vista and all it's associated updates etc ran perfectly. So check your
BIOS and make sure the driver you load are for the correct model. And find
the guy from HP who is putting all the dv2000 stickers on the wrong model and
tell him I'd like to have a quiet word with him.
