IE8 uninstalled(KB957700); In IE7 complenta mode; How to install I

D

HP xp home.SP3. Due to a conflict with an HP printer prog, uninstalled ie8
vial the pertinent KB957700 instructions, and wound up in compatibility mode
(side by side)for what seems to be an IE6 based, IE7 compatibilty
mode(strange to me!) Anyway, just want to make sure on which step to now
take rather than just installing IE7 and fouling something up.

All help appreciated in advance. Thanks, Diligent.

[crosspost to IE General]

Were you running IE6 or IE7 before you installed IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed or uninstalled IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

May I assume that you did not disable Comodo (1) anti-virus & (2) firewall,
Spybot Residents (3) SDHelper and/or (4) Tea Timer, and then (5) enable the
Windows Firewall prior to installing and/or uninstalling IE8?

empty)

Erunt-erdnt backups: May 21, 25, 26, 30>>>all 2009

Should have looked this up before my reply, but just did not think about the
IE 7-8 info.

Re: IE8 uninstalled(KB957700) In IE7 complenta mode How to insta

Further IE 6-7-8 prog clarification. The current IE's in my explorer file
follow:

(1) iexplore (won't open internet): Vers: 7.0.6000.16850. created 4/25/09

(2) iexplore(2) (does open internet in compatibility>>side by side mode):
Vers. 6.0.2.2900.2180 created 4/25/09

Dont know if vers. 6.0.2......... is IE6 or not, now that I think about it!

Answers to your last posted questions:

(A) likely did not disable comodo (1) antivrus nor (2) firewall Usually
don't on any download. Do disable on installs though as a routine.

Not running" Spybot Residents (3) SDHelper and/or (4) Tea Timer

Is "Windows Internet Explorer 7" listed in Add/Remove Programs?

Re: IE8 uninstalled(KB957700) In IE7 complenta mode How to insta

Just saw your message when writing this new info reply. Guess I have to start
fresh on this forum every time from my bookmarks.

Just to note, I did do both a system restore point and erunt-erdnt registry
save, just (say two minutes) prior to doing the IE8 uninstall.

On your question, I cannot tell >> (& cant see how to tell)>> when the SP3
was installed. probably very soon after the April 26 initial date, cause I
know I was aware I was running on SP2, and made a point of it to upgrade to
SP3.

4/26/09 1:31 pm did HP XPhome disk recovery
4/26/09 1:31 pm KB969897 update, updated.
4/27/09 KB938127_v2_ie2 updated,>>>>along with a "spunist" in C:/windows/IE7.

No, not listed in add/remove, but is listed in revo-uninstaller and in the
system tools list under system restore, an IE icon with "Internet Explorer
(no addons) exists.

Hmmm

Thanks again.

Re: IE8 uninstalled(KB957700) In IE7 complenta mode How to insta

[Please continue the crossposting to both newsgroups when you reply to this
post. Thanks.]

Recap:

1. Earlier, you told us that you're running WinXP SP3. You installed IE8
and found an HP printer software incompatibility so you uninstalled IE8 per
KB957700 and then found your previous IE version (either IE7 or IE6) wasn't
working properly.

2. In your last series of replies, you tell us that you did a "HP XPhome
disk recovery" on 26 April 200, after which you (re)installed WinXP SP3 and,
I assume, installed all critical security updates.

Assuming (a) doing the "HP XPhome disk recovery" means that you used the CDs
that came with your computer or the hidden Recovery partition to return the
machine to OOBE state (the condition it was in when you purchased it) and
that (
cool.gif
either IE7 or IE8 had been installed before you did this
"recovery," let me point you to this KB article:

How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if a later version of
Internet Explorer is installed:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964

Translation: You should have uninstalled IE8 and/or IE7 before doing the
"recovery." Since you didn't do so, IE's messed up now.

The ONLY way to make things right now is to backup your personal data, then
do a format & clean install of Windows.

Please note that another Repair Install will NOT fix this and that you MUST
format your hard-drive before using either the CDs that came with your
computer or the hidden Recovery partition to return the machine to OOBE
state!

How do you do a "clean install"? See
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

5 steps to help protect your new computer before you go online

HOW TO get a computer running WinXP Gold (no Service Packs) fully patched
(after a clean install)
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.p...f5afa8ed33e121c

HOW TO get a computer running WinXP SP1(a) or SP2 fully patched (after a
clean install)
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.p...066ae41add7dd2b

NB: Please do NOT install IE8 or IE7 until the computer's fully-patched at
Windows Update! When you're ready to install IE7 or IE8, ping me via a post
in this newsgroup then I'll give you specific instructions.

Good luck!
