I'm trying to connect to another computer via an ad-hoc wireless
network and am having a great deal of difficulty in succeeding.
In Wireless Network Connection Properties I click the "Wireless
Networks" tab. I click the "Advance" button, select "Computer-to-
computer (ad hoc) networks only" and uncheck "Automatically connect to
non-preferred networks". I click the "Close" button and then click
the "Add..." button. I provide a "Network name (SSID)" and set
"Network Authentication" to "Open" and "Data encryption" to
"Disabled". I do this per , which states "Wireless
Equivalency Protocol (WEP) settings are not being configured at this
time because it's easier to get an ad hoc wireless network running
smoothly before attempting to configure WEP data encryption."
Anyway, I click OK twice and the screen closes. I then go to my other
computer - the client computer - and try to connect to the new ad-hoc
network. I can see it from the "Choose a wireless network" screen so
I double click on it. It connects and I can access the SMB shares of
the host computer.
I then go to the host computer, again, and click on the "Local Area
Connection" network (ie. the wired connection). I click on the
"Advanced" tab, check "Allow other network useres to connect through
this computer's Internet connection" and hit "OK". I go to the client
computer, try to go to google.com and can't.
I then uncheck "Allow other network users to connect through this
computer's Internet connection" on "Local Area Connection" and check
it on "Wireless Network Connection". I get the following message:
> When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, your LAN adapter will be set to use IP address 192.168.0.1. Your
> computer may lose connectivity with other computers on your network. If these other computers have static IP
> addresses, you should set them to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure you want to enable
> Internet Connection Sharing?
Since the host computer is connected to the internet via "Local Area
Connection" - not via "Wireless Network Connection" - I figure it's
not an issue. If the "Wireless Network Connection" has an IP address
of 192.168.0.1 that's not a problem - the client computer can have an
IP address of 192.168.0.2 or something. So I click "Yes" and then
"OK". I disconnect the client and reconnect it and... nothing. Not
only can I still not load webpages - now I can't even access the the
host computer via SMB. In fact, when I do ipconfig, the output that I
get doesn't make any sense:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.130.200
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
That's not the same subnet as 192.168.0.1 so I guess the "Local Area
Connection" is the one I was supposed to share. Of course, when I
tried, it didn't work. And is certainly useless in this
regard. It says "the connection to be shared". Which connection is
that? I want the host computer to "share" the "Local Area Connection"
with the "Wireless Network Connection" and I want the host computer to
"share" the "Wireless Network Connection" with the client. Saying
"the connection to be shared" is really quite ambiguous and quite
useless, too.
Long story short, I'm clueless. I think the instructions at
are useless and haven't a clue as to what I'm supposed to do.
Any ideas?
