sysprep and 2008 activation

Why am I getting a The product key you typed in already in use for 2008?
This always worked for new machines we setup

D

Dusko Savatovic

If you are talking about Volume License Keys (VLK), then these keys have a
certain finite number of activations.

You can see a number of remaining activations of a VLK by using a tool VAMT
(Volume Activation Management Tool).

Do you have a VL copy of Windows 2008, or a retail copy of Windows 2008? If
VL, as Dusko suggested, how many licenses were provided with your agreement?
Has it reached the limit?

It says

The product key you entered is not supported for use by this ciopy of VAMT.

I have used this key and activated 2008 for a few times. I am not sure how
many times but now I cannot activate any more

That message sounds like you tried to use a retail key. However, I
understand you are saying you didn't.

See if this thread helps.

ok I called MS and was able to activate it by phone. But why was it not
working when I tried to

type in slmgr -ato?

I basically have a image that I run sysprep with. After the new machine
boots up, the activation resets itself. So I wanted it to automatically
register itself by putting slmgr.vbs -ato into SetupComplete.cmd in
c:\windows\setup\scripts.

But fails. What do I have to do now? I dont want to call ms for activation
for any new 2008 machine I setup

You must purchase, or rather subscribe toVL Key and VL Media. If you are
already a VL customer, your VLK and VLM is available on the VL web site.

Sysprep and VAMT only work correctly with volume license media. The same
applies to Office suite. If you want to do admin install of Office, you need
Volume license media and matching keys.

I am pretty sure we are VL customer. But how do I access it? I signed in
with my .net account and does not work. Do I have to register with my
company domain email address?

When you originally purchased the VL license from your channel distributor
(TechData, Ingram, Softmart, etc, and not from a retail store), you should
have got some sort of info regarding the license, and other products that
come with the license. For example, when you purchase Office 2007 VL, you
get a whole list of products that come along with the purchase, including
BCM and a whole copy of Office 2003 Pro.

I'm not sure what site you tried to logon to, but you would have to logon to
the following site to view the info.
https://eopen.microsoft.com

If your credentials don't work, then you would have to contact your
distributor who sold it to you. If in fact you do have a VL license, but
never logged on to download the VL media, and you are trying to do this with
retail media, then I can understand what is going on, and the retail media
activation count has been exhausted (5 I think?). VL keys won't work with
retail, OEM, Technet, MSDN or any other media.

I only have a Key of 2008 that my manager forwarded to me. Are you saying
that in addtion to just having a key, I need to register this key online and
make it a VL Key? So by default every key without registering is a retail
key? Yes looks like I activated 5 times and stopped working

No, that's not what I'm saying. You can't take any key and make it a VL. A
retail key stops after 5 activations. VLs keep going based on your
agreement.

You cannot make a retail key into a VL. Retail keys are purchased as a
'boxed' copy, you know, the key that's printed on the box or CD cover.
That's retail. VL is a whole different process, which is purchased from a
channel distributor/partner, such as the places I previously mentioned. VL
cannot be purchased at CompUSA, BestBuy, Circuit City, Staples, etc or any
retail store. VLs don't even come in a box!

I'm saying is that when you purchase a VL license, Microsoft directly
supplies the channel partner information regarding the new agreement, and
the channel partner than provides that info so you can logon to the eOpen
site to view your license information, the VL key, and download the
associated media. That's where it comes from.

To logon, you would need to get the necessary info from your distributor,
such as the agreement ID and some other info. I can't remember exactly what
else was needed since I helped a customer purchase an Office 2007 VL license
back in Jan or Feb, but the distributor let us have the ID info, and we used
that to initialize an account at eOpen, which then we were able to view and
copy the VL Keys, and then clicked on the download section to download the
media.

So you are saying your manager fowarded you a key? Where did he get the key?
From the back of a box or CD cover? What media (CD) are you using? Did the
CD come out of a box or part of an OEM packaged (shipped with a server, such
as from Dell, HP, etc)?

Hello,
Let's start by checking what type of key is installed on the system.
Open an elevated CMD prompt
Run slmgr /dlv
what are the top three lines, from the output
should look something like this:
Software licensing service version: 6.0.6002.18005
Name: Windows™ Vista, Enterprise edition
Description: Windows Operating System - Vista, VOLUME_KMSCLIENT channel

Thanks,

This is what I get

Software licensing service version: 6.0.6001.18000
Name: Windows Server

D

Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hello Joey,
You have installed a KMS host key on the machine. So every machine is
attempting to become a KMS host.
So by default you get 6 Activations with a KMS hsot key.

So the question becomes are you intending on using KMS as your solution or
are you intending on using MAK keys are your solution.
With a KMS host, if you do not change the setup key which installs by
default, your clients will attempt to locate a KMS host and start building
the count so they can activate.
MAK keys have multiple activations on them in accordance to your licensing
agreement, you would need to change to a MAK key if you want to use this
and activate via the MS activation servers
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
