Moving system partition to new disk

J

John L

Win 2003 SR R2

The original system builder has 1 - 750 GB disk drive partitioned as 100 GB
C (system partition) and 650 GB D (data folders)

Performance is impacted because of the system needs against heavy folder
access by client systems.

Question.

Is there a process whereby I can add another disk drive and move the system
partition to that one as the new C drive. This will greatly improve
performance. Norton Ghost does not run on server 2003 and I believe
partition magic does not as well.

Any tips are greatly appreciated.

I am making the assumption that these are truly single disks and not raid
sets.
As a suggestion, Add the 2nd disk as the data folders. You can add the
disk, format it and move the data to it and transfer the shares over. This
would be easier and less downtime. If you really want to move the system
partition to a new disk you can use a WinPE boot disk and create an image X
of the disk that you can restore to another disk. Windows imaging tools are
not super friendly so make sure you read and understand how to create WinPE
disk and the Image X capture.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library...490(WS.10).aspx. Finally,
you should be able to use the imaging program that comes with your new
drive. Each drive Mfg has a transfer utility that I have found to work
well. It should be available on an included CD or via download from the
site.

btw if these are not raid sets, then you have no data redundancy to keep you
running in the event of a hdd failure. I would strongly recommend that you
consider at the very least adding a mirrored set.

BootIT NG will copy the system partition to a new drive.
You can also hide the origninal partition in the original plaec so it's not
seen by the OS, as a "just in case".

I recommend Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery.

I just used it on my Citrix Server. The server ran out of disk space on the
system partition. I just made an image of the server, stuck in the new
drives, restored the image. It even allows you to resize the partitions.

Oh yea, they let you download a fully working 60 day free trial version.

It's really easy to use and it worked great for me.
