W2K3 server is locked

Found the Server - Windows 2003 Entrprise - in a Locked state.

It seems to be frozen and Crtl-Alt-Del does nothing.

Short of power off to shut it down, what can be done?

thx

You could try a remote shutdown from another machine.
shutdown \\computername

Thanks for the fast response.
Couple question, since I am not fimiliar with the shutdown.

I am using Windows 2003 not 2000. Will 2003 work?
Do I have to install the 2003 Resource kit on this XP Professional computer,
to get shutdown.exe?

Will it work if the Windows 2003 Server is Locked - "The computer is in use
and has been locked"?

AFAIR, shutdown.exe is a native tool of Win2003. Furthermore there are
numerous look-alikes of shutdown.exe, e.g. psshutdn.exe from
www.sysinternals.com.

I believe shutdown.exe is part of the standard Windows implimentation. It
should not matter that it is locked as long as the account you are logged in
with has administrative privileges.

However, let's try this 1st

type
mstsc.exe /v:into the run command on your local pc(substitute
your actual server name for ). lets see if we can connect using
remote desktop 1st before shutting down. If so you should be able to
control the server just as if you were at the console.

Steve

PS - have you tried a new keyboard?

Tried that and it would not let me logon.

Are you saying that the Shutdown.exe installed with XP Professional, will
allow me to remotely connect the the Windows 2003 Server?

Or do I have to install it from a 2003 Resiurce Kit CD - which I do not
have here?

thx again for your help

What message did you get when trying to connect via mstsc.exe? Regarding
shutdown.exe, You can type in shutdown.exe at the command prompt. If you
help messages back, then it is installed. If you get the file is not an
installed program error, then it is not installed. - that is the easiest way
to tell.

Did you check your keyboard on the server? Dumb question I know, but I had
to ask.

Message - the computer cannot connect to the remote computer . Remote
Desktop disconnected.

When I search, I find shutdown in System32 folder.

I just did not know if the XP version was the same as the Windows 2003
version.

Yes I attached a USB Keyboard and no response from the keys?

That is why I'm trying to re-start or logoff without just hitting the Power
button.

Yes

I do have the shutdown.

Entered it at the command level and all attributes show under help.

Is there any way to logoff instead of shutdown?

Will this work?

You could do it using Computer Management. Open Computer Management on your
machine and connect to Bob's computer, then right-click on Bob's computer
and select Properties. Switch to the Advanced tab, and click Settings under
Startup And Recovery options. Now go to Shutdown and under Action click Log
Off Current User and then OK

I've never done it this way. You cannot use Shutdown.exe to log off a
remote computer. Usually I use terminal server manager to log users off a
remote computer - but that is part of the administrators kit. Maybe some
one else has an idea?

If I could ask - what good will logging the user off do you? I thought that
the CTL ALT DEL functions where not working - did I misread?

What I'm trying to do is to re-start the Server - it is hung in the
"Computer Locked" state.

Yes Crtl-Alt-Del will not work. There is no activity from the Key board. I
even tried another USB key board - no luck.

I'm trying to avoid just hitting the power switch to turn it off.

I then will re-sart and hopefully all is ok.

If you've not already powered off or otherwise fixed the issue, make sure
you use the /f switch on the shutdown.exe command as well. That will force
all applications to close. Otherwise, it will wait nicely for them to close.
And yes, it is included with Windows XP and will work on all other versions
of Windows after Windows 2000. So the command would look like this -
"shutdown.exe -r -f -m \\servername" - where \\servername is the name of
your server. Type in shutdown.exe /? and you'll get all the switches
possible.

If using the shutdown option from Computer Mgmt then make sure you choose
"Always" under the "Force Apps Closed:" section.

Brooke
